At first you might question if people need yet another messaging app but this makes a ton of sense for Pinterest to deepen engagement with its users, bringing them back to the app multiple times per day (I have a hunch most active users on Pinterest explore the site in long sittings rather than multiple short sessions a day but I could be totally wrong). The landing page introduces interesting use cases (e.g. planning a trip with friends) and I bet there are several others that will organically surface within this interest-based network. High five, @connor! Did you work on this? :)

@rrhoover High five! I was on a team of between 5-9 people working on this. It started as a week-long hackathon in Portland, then we production-ized it out over the following 10 weeks or so. You hit the nail on the hit with use-cases. We're expecting this to complement your Pinterest experience by being able to talk about things (think: looking at wedding invitations... which is what I've been using this for w/ my lady :)). We've had the "Send-a-Pin" feature for about a year now, but you've never been able to reply and discuss that Pin. This solves that problem.

@rrhoover Communication on any given platform is an innate necessity and more developers should make effort, like Pinterest has, to optimize it for their platform. This is very well implemented, not seemingly just tacked on for messaging sake.

I think it goes without saying that you've created a beautiful product site and a beautiful promotional video... but I'll reiterate, because they really look great. I really enjoy the touch + hold + swipe gesture on the mobile app for starting a new conversation. I'm troubled that it may be a subtle interaction that users overlook — or discover by accident. What's the engagement like there?

The whole page experience with message first and the following video on each section is sooo good! I mean, as much as I don't use pinterest, I would actually use something like this with my lady friend.

More than little psyched that the Pinterest crew prototyped this in Portland :)
