What exactly are the changes? I must be missing something because all of the screenshots here on PH seem to be the same features and views as the old app...
@miles_matthias The biggest change is the homepage which is brand new. There are a bunch of other features but hopefully you can't miss that one : ) (unless you're in the holdback)
@miles_matthias Correct, many of the sexy features that get coverage in tech are redesigns, because the cool under the hood stuff is hard to actually show to people, like a new model to rank tips for example. One "new new" visible feature in this release is the ability to see how many times a person leaving a tip has been to a place. So we're combining our location data w/ our tip content to hopefully give our users a better understanding of who is writing the tip. Small details that I love but aren't as headline grabbing : )
I was just thinking about Foursquare and what a shame it is that they aren't one of the prominent social media apps anymore, especially since they were so incredibly innovative when they started out. Nice to see an update like this!
Thanks @chrismessina for sharing this Mobile app gem. Congratulations @dens@MarissaChacko@thetomytom@jcro for this amazing release. It would be nice to see how you approached the new iOS features to make Foursquare so engaging. A comment here is more than welcome to keep the discussion alive. Feel free to invite any iOS developer involved in the project.
BTW, you must check it out this amazing post from the great Mixpanel team in their SIgnal blog about iOS 10: https://blog.mixpanel.com/2016/0...
and this one from @jxavvy (VP of Engineering at Mixpanel):

Gorgeous redesign; this app is such a pleasure to use. I love Foursquare and it's always the first app I go to when I'm in a new place and want to see what's around. Unfortunately I usually have to open Yelp after because it feels like most reviews on Foursquare are from 2013 (or just not recent). I wish more people used it!
@juanbuis Hi Juan! We just released the app this afternoon, and it takes a while for apps to become available on the App Store after a release. Please check back in a few hours!
Foursquare is #1 my go-to for finding places to eat/booze/caffeinate, especially when traveling or in a new neighborhood.
Much preferred over Yelp although I did love Kevin Roses' Oink from back in the day.
I love the new views. Foursquare looks finally much more fun. I updated the app on iOS 10 and while I'm getting the new splash screen, the app look is still the old. Are you running any AB tests?
@ckor We are ... sorry you got stuck in the hold back, we are hoping to end the test as soon as possible but you know the drill, got to confirm our #'s : )
@ckor Yes, we A/B test pretty much everything at Foursquare. We've been iterating on the new homepage for a few months and testing prototypes internally and doing user research. We have a small holdback for the new home screen to verify its impact on search activity and new user retention (the metrics we're most excited about moving the needle on with this update), and to make sure we didn't hurt any other metrics unexpectedly.
As far as the rest of the app, we didn't reskin every single screen because we didn't think that was a good use of our engineering and design time - we wanted to focus on the most important pieces. We've also been doing some of our iteration publicly - the new History Tab, for example, has been released publicly for a few months. We've also been making lots of small but impactful tweaks - for example, if you've visited a place more than 5 times, we'll highlight that on your tip so everyone will know that you're a regular!
Whoa - this is a change! Love the confidence to dedicate half of the entire home page to basically a custom content block. That's bold.
Any idea when this'll roll out to Android?
@samgrossberg@cdohertyk Hey, nice work with the 10! Why not including a link to Play Store as well in Product Hunt? I am pretty sure a lot of people don't find the link below GET button and they just assume is iOS only.
Really excited for the forward moves Foursquare and Swarm have made lately. Once they split apps, the magic seemed to disappear, many of my friends left and the fun seemed to die. It's finally making a comeback, and this update is a great push toward the future!
I haven't used foursquare for about 5 years wow there has been many iterations over the years, but the company does seem focused on using the data they have accumulated over the years and bringing real value to users. Will download to play around with the app, keep it up!
@ankit_t_ Thanks! Would love to hear what you think of the changes we've made. We definitely use the foot traffic data to drive better rankings and ratings, as well as help users keep track of the cool places they go. We're always looking to deliver more value as we know sharing this data is a big ask for folks so open to other ideas on how you would love to see this data used in other places in the product.
@marissa_chacko Downloaded app and played around with it, thought I knew my local area however have found some new gems to explore! Some places have reviews dating back to 2009! Regardless I will continue using the app, I do miss the fun elements of foursquare and value of checkins (mayor/deals) but I can also value in this being tips from locals. Keep up the great work and best of luck to you and your team.
@troypetrunoff I really like using foursquare; it feels more intuitive to use when saving places. When you're searching for different categories; you can refine your search to only include places you've saved or even places you've never been to ebfore
Curious to know what the makers think of the comparison between foursqaure and Zomato. I love the experience of Foursqaure but for the use case of search, Zomato functions amazingly well. The leg work that's been done to get the menus into the Zomato experience means that when it comes down to actually wanting to check a restaurant out, I'll open Zomato 9 times out 10. When I'm in an unknown part of town, I'll still open Zomato usually. Foursquare has a much more snazzy experience in detecting where I am and notifying, but doesn't have all the information I might want. Maybe the makers don't think of it this way and I'm going in the wrong direction but would love to hear a bit more on this :)
@kiriappeee I'm with you! I once used both apps but ended up only relying on zomato, mainly because of the prices being right there! some search options were better in foursquare, and recommendations were much better, but somehow I always turned into zomato. Will give it a try with this new update, though
I never could get over the way they scrapped the original product that made them so successful. Splitting into two apps, neither of which I like for a myriad of reasons, was a terrible idea.
