While looking at the landscape of African businesses, I noticed a trend: hustles rarely become franchises. We see global fast-food giants like KFC, McDonald's, and Burger King, but where are the African franchises? For example, Puff-puff (Vatkoek or Amagwinya in South Africa) remains a local hustle rather than a national or global franchise. There are so many young Africans with incredible ideas, projects, and hustles, but history shows these rarely evolve into long-term, sustainable businesses—what we like to call "Trust-fund Businesses." Existing solutions like marketplaces and incubators don’t always address this need: Incubators are typically focused on tech or intellectual property (IP)-driven businesses, leaving many ideas out. Marketplaces like Gumtree, Etsy, and Takealot cater to established hustlers and often reject people who are just starting out and not yet "marketplace ready."
