UpLevel helps aspiring data scientists of all levels get deliberate practice and improve their skills through thoughtfully designed projects. No spoon-feeding, no videos, and no pre-filled code cells in our Jupyter notebooks.
Hello hunters! 👋
I'm Jackie, co-founder and CEO of UpLevel, based in Singapore. Really excited to share with you the story behind UpLevel, what exactly we're trying to solve here, and why we're so excited at this particular juncture in our adventure (scroll all the way down for goodies if tl;dr).
️🔥The main problem️🔥
If you learned Python and data science through MOOCs, short/crash courses, classes in school, etc, chances are that you'd struggle if you were asked to tackle a problem from scratch.
For online courses, we don't get to deliberately practice what we learn due to pedagogy such as pre-filled code that just requires you to Shift+Enter or passive one-directional instruction, e.g., YouTube. For crash courses, the lack of depth means there is little opportunity to contextual what you learn, forcing you to move from point A to point B quickly.
This leads to a lack of confidence to tackle data problems on our own post-course, or even worse - prepare for a career in data science where you'd need to code independently and have a portfolio of work to demonstrate competence and/or curiosity.
❓Why UpLevel❓
After teaching hundreds of students in Python and data science in a coding school, I realized that there is a skill gap between what students learn from school and what is required out there at the workplace after watching students (not just mine) struggle with their goals post-course.
With my co-founder Rachel, we launched the very first version of UpLevel where I mentored small teams of students to execute bespoke data science projects to build confidence, skills, and their portfolio over 4-6 weeks.
😎What's happening now?😎
For the longest time, we focused on our first version. However, we noticed two patterns that required us to pivot and develop the second version of UpLevel. Firstly, we were not scaling our impact. Secondly, students wanted to work on projects at their own time and pace.
As such, we're launching our DIY data projects, where you work on projects through designed Jupyter notebooks. Learners can purchase standalone notebooks, or subscribe monthly to receive credits to spend on any projects in our ever-expanding project catalog.
❤️What we're doing for the community❤️
For the PH launch, we're doing two things:
1. A two-week long discount for our monthly subscription
2. A 20% discount code for all standalone projects in our catalog (PRODUCTHUNT)
Thanks for reading this lengthy introduction, and I hope you give us a try and spread the word.
With much love,
Jackie and Rachel
