Tutanota is a free secure email service that just launched an encrypted calendar. With Tutanota we are building the secure alternative to Google with a free mailbox, address book, calendar - all encrypted by default.
Hi there π Matthias here from Tutanota (https://tutanota.com/?ref=produc...) π Firstly, let us celebrate: We've launched on Product Hunt π
AND: We've just released a fully encrypted calendar (https://tutanota.com/blog/posts/...)!!! π
Tutanota lets you use the benefits of the cloud without compromising on security. In addition to that, we've been very busy this last year:
β We've rebuilt the Tutanota email client from scratch to make is faster, more beautiful and to add an encrpyted search feature (https://tutanota.com/blog/posts/...).
β We were able to publish our open source Android app on F-Droid making it completely Google-free (https://tutanota.com/blog/posts/...).
β We published dedicated open source desktop clients (https://tutanota.com/blog/posts/...) for Linux, Windows and Mac OS.
β We turned Tutanota into a green email service (https://tutanota.com/blog/posts/...), which relies 100% on renewable energy.
Now letβs celebrate our launch together! I know as tech experts you love privacy-first apps, so try Tutanota today. With our launch on Producthunt you'll get 5 months for free via this special sign-up link: https://mail.tutanota.com/signup... Your support means everything to us. Suggestions, questions, feedback? Please leave a comment, weβd love to hear from you! π And finally, thank you for your upvote in advance π
Happy Tutanota user here... I just can't express how happy I am by using Tutanota.
Tutanota just works, everything is simple and the pricing is great.
I haven't used their calendar yet as I'm a bit disorganized person π but self hosting an email node and handling email privacy sucks, but thankfully there is Tutanota that handles all this for you without really having deep knowledge about how it really works under the hood. Totally happy to have switched fully to Tutanota!
What makes me the most happy about it is their team. They are a small team, but they manage to do a lot of stuff with quality! And if you have any issue, you can just turn up in their reddit or send a message to them.
Thanks for being a great product!
I have been using tutanota for just over 6 months now. So far I am very impressed and feel pretty confident I will be a longtime customer. I only have a few problems with connectivity to the mail servers right now but that is up and down and very infrequent.
With premium support I get a response really quick and have great turn around on solving any issues I find or getting guidance to a specific howto that I couldn't find. Now I am excited to use the just release beta calendar!
Great work Tutanota team!
Iβve started using Tutanota about a month ago. So far my experience has been stellar. Fast, fast, fast! Great job guys! Iβm looking forward to Checking out the calendar!
At current annual rate it's just the best private email service out there. Additionally I'm absolutely stunned with the fast release cycles which brings new features and bug-fixes.
Thank you and keep up the great job!
Excellent service, been a happy customer for more than a year now and constantly impressed with the Tutanota Team's focus on privacy, ethics, and low cost.
You know, I could even use the Product Hunt discount* right now and get another year of Premium for even cheaper, but I don't want to, just because I like the product so much and think β¬12 a year is a INSANE bargain already.
Keep it up team!

As a paid customer for a long time I can say I didn't saw any issues or downtime since the beginning, so thanks Tutanota team for a best service and reasonable pricing.
As for Calendar, I would be happy to expicitly see when I will receive notifications for a, let's say, all-day event. When I set the event, I want to be sure I receive email notification at least once. It also would be a killer-feature to be able to set a custom notifications schedule for an important (perhaps multi-staged) event.
Thank you, guys
Man, your email service is just awesome! Just tried your calendar. It sure could use some "custom repeat" feature and maybe adding colors for events. Until then, I think I'll stick to other calendar options but other than that, your efforts are truly to be recognized in this era where privacy is something that has been completely taken from us.
Greetings, great calendar for my pc use but I do not see it anywhere via my android phone on the Tutanota application. Can anyone help me find it?
Tutanota, keep up your excellent service and products!!!!!!!!!
Thank you!
I've been using them for about two years. They are okay for basic private email functionality. They are absolutely not a replacement for gmail, neither from a technology perspective nor a UX Design perspective.
There are a ton of things that are problematic:
- Email inbox frequently doesn't load and you have to go to the address bar to remove characters from the address for it to work
- Searching for an email requires you to "build an index" first. Every time you try to do a search, it spits out a warning saying you need to build an index first. In other words, you can't search for emails.
- Really hard to mange multiple accounts
- They recently did a UI refresh that just demonstrated their lack of understanding for what good design is. They just added some new fonts and a slightly nicer color scheme over the same interaction design problems and made some issues far worse.
- Poor product priorities: launching a calendar feature before fixing issues on the core product that literally break your experience
- The service is also just super slow. Opening a folder can take upwards of 10 seconds.
Overall, when I use this, I get the impression that this team is small and never expected this product to grow the way it has, and now they are scrambling to get it right, without success
@jamalnichols2 Thanks for your feedback, and thanks for staying with Tutanota for such a long time.
- Please make sure to use the corect login address to access Tutanota - there's no need to 'remove characters': https://mail.tutanota.com
- All data in Tutanota is encrypted to protect your privacy. To search your emails, you must do this locally. We were one of the first encrypted services to implement performant search on encrypted data, also on mobile devices. Here are details: https://tutanota.com/blog/posts/...
- We plan to add multi-user support to the beta desktop clients.
- The calendar was one of the highest voted for features by our users, prioritizing this feature in addition to adding features to the email client is mostly received very well by our users.
We expect to grow much faster in the coming years, as user base and our team are growing constantly. This will also speed up development, no worries. π
@matthiaspfau Did you just really give me instruction to use the correct URL. That's insulting that you'd think I'm that foolish. Your email client frequently can't access emails unless you go to www.tutanota.com and log back in. It's a known issue that other people in this comments section have highlighted as well. Your UI is just frustrating, I've reached out in the past to offer help but you never responded. The service is also just super slow. Opening a folder can take upwards of 10 seconds.
