My favorite WW1 book. Read it a few times and see something new each time. It's a classic for a reason. The characterizations of the major and minor players are excellent, and help understand why the leaders and generals stumbled into something that in hindsight was such a huge disaster. If you only read one book on WW1, I'd recommend this one.
“A fine demonstration that with sufficient art rather specialized history can be raised to the level of literature.”—The New York Times
