Hey Product Hunt we're extremely excited to let you know about our new app for iOS 11! SMS Shield is a multilingual machine-learning based SMS spam and phishing filter. It is super intelligent, multilingual, has a very innovative feature for frequent travellers, extensive accessibility support, and integrates seamlessly into iOSโ€™s Messages. Unlike email, people tend to trust SMS more. 90% of SMS are read within 3 seconds. Compared to 20% for email, SMS open-rate is an astonishing 98%. The rapid open-rates coupled with the fact that the senderโ€™s number can be easily spoofed means victims are very likely to click on the link or call the number. This makes SMS an extremely lucrative platform for unsolicited advertisers and hackers. Banking customers in particular continue to lose millions every year to SMS phishing attacks. It have been a lot of fun combining CoreML and scikit-learn. Really excited to know what you think of it and if you got any questions or suggestions ๐Ÿค“๐Ÿค–

@objective_neo How effective will this be for SMSes of varying regions? Like I am from India so will it work as effectively as for where it was intended? Just curious. At Rs300/year this is a absolute bargain so if it does work, subscribing to it immediately. :D :D

@torchaj app works pretty well in India ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ณโค๏ธ. We had many beta testers from India because I know SMS spam is a major problem there. App got also 1 week free trial period so you can give it a go and see how it works out for you ๐Ÿ™‚

@objective_neo Thanks for the quick reply, and don't actually need a trial :P Subscribed and happy :) Love the Frequent Traveller Mode toggle :D

Would be worth trying this out. Would be curious how you can help operators reduce spam on their own networks. There are companies like CloudMark that are filtering services for spam messages at the messaging provider level. Also GSMA, association for all network providers globally, has a program that actively tries to combat spam by reporting content to a sms enabled number in each country. Let me know if you need more context, been involved in messaging for a large chunk of my past.

@otherdev this is a pretty awesome idea. Will investigate that option ๐Ÿค“๐Ÿ”

Maybe I missed it, but I can't find any kind of promise that all of my messages will be completely secure or encrypted when using SMS Shield. What kind of privacy assurances can you make regarding this service? What happens if someone hacks Taphive and steals my messages?
Hosam Hassan
@magnuson all your SMS is 100% private. The SMS is classified on device with CoreML and never saved or sent anywhere. There is no server to be hacked ๐Ÿ™‚

I've used this app for a couple of weeks and love it. I've been getting lots of spam in messages and so nice to get rid off.

Pros:

It's set and forget and helps me effectively sort out spam messages

Cons:

One more subscription ๐Ÿ˜

Not sure if this is primarily for international use but in the US, SMS spam is pretty rare compared to email. Reason being bc there are strict laws by the FCC in regards to sending unsolicited messages by businesses with fines up to $1k per message sent. Not sure how much use this service would be in the US. There is a reason why the open rate for SMS is so high.
Hosam Hassan
@jeff_j_park that's a good point since spam is illegal in many countries but in that case the App is very effective for none-tech people for protecting them from phishing attacks which are pretty common via SMS.
