Taika (“magic” in Finnish) is a perfectly calibrated coffee in a can, balanced with adaptogens designed to keep you calm, focused and clear. Designed by world’s 9th best barista, Taika tastes delicious without any added sugar.
Hey Product Hunt! Thank you @chrismessina for hunting us.
For the past year, I've been heads-down building Taika with my co-founder @michael_eyal_sharon. We’re super excited to finally share what we’ve been working on.
My background is deep in coffee: I’m a two-time Finnish Barista Champion and was ranked 9th best in the world in 2015. Before Taika, I co-founded Sudden Coffee (YC W17) which makes “instant coffee you’ll actually want to drink”, as NYTimes put it.
Both Michael and I love coffee (surprise). Alas, over the past few years caffeine started giving us nasty side effects many people are familiar with: anxiety, jitters, and crashes. Decaf wasn’t the answer: most of the time we wanted some caffeine, but not the side effects.
This is when we discovered L-theanine and other adaptogens - natural plant extracts and functional mushrooms - that support the body’s ability to deal with stress. We started researching and experimenting with these compounds. Adaptogens turned out to be a game-changer in balancing the caffeine and reducing the side effects.
However, keeping a bunch of random capsules with you and remembering to take them every time you have coffee sucks. We both hate compromising and set out to create a coffee that’s absolutely delicious and perfectly calibrated with the highest quality adaptogens.
We’re launching with three flavors, each featuring the same adaptogen blend:
- A sugar-free, keto-friendly macadamia latte that tastes like melted coffee ice cream. As far as we know, it's the first macadamia latte on the market.
- Oat milk latte which tastes like coffee cereal milk but has no added sugar.
- Black coffee - a brilliantly smooth, bold brew, never bitter. Unsweetened and keto-friendly.
Taika is currently available in SF, LA, and NYC for 2hr contactless delivery, powered by Postmates.

What questions can we answer?
As a beta tester, I've been enjoying the evolution of @kallefreese's new coffee product. It's super smooth and the adaptogens mean I get less of the jitters and don't crash as hard when I indulge in a second round of coffee.
The branding is also genius! And I love that you can literally text them to make an order or just shoot the shit:

@kallefreese Congrats on the launch!
I was excited to try this and just tried to order, but it says shipping is not available to me (North Carolina).
"There are no shipping methods available for your cart or address"
Is this ONLY available via postmates?
Hey @edholloway - yeah, we're currently only delivering via Postmates in SF, LA and NYC as the coffee needs to stay cold at all times and shipping it would be expensive and wasteful.
This sounds really cool!
I love the taste of coffee but can't stand caffeine, so end up with decaf most of the times (though that ends up tasty rather nasty sometimes). How do the other chemicals you mentioned help deal with caffeine's side effects? Is this meant to be a replacement to decaf? Do you see yourself eventually going into coffee beans/powder as well, or sticking to cans?
Thanks!
Have you tested this throughout the day? I find that coffee itself has a higher impact in later hours of the day to cause restlessness so I tend to avoid after certain hours.
Do people use this for late afternoon/evening work sessions to for focused energy?
@normanliang We've tested our coffee at all hours 🙃 Caffeine and the adaptogens affect everyone differently. If you're sensitive to caffeine, we wouldn't recommend drinking Taika later than any other coffee. That being said, Taika definitely gives you steadier energy and focus without the restlessness when compared to regular coffee.
Nice design. Are "adaptogens" proven in any way? Some light Googling indicates the science is severely lacking. I mean, Gwyneth Paltrow and Alex Jones both endorse them. Not trolling, just very skeptical. Enlighten me. :)
I used to drink 1-2 cups of coffee per day, but recently I’ve switched it to green tea. Green tea gives more long lasting ”uplift” compared to bulk coffee. I wonder if Taika is different because of L-theanin. How would you compare Taika and green tea effect?
Taika is the best coffee in a can/bottle I’ve had. It’s rare that products become an instant favorite for me but this one did. Two of my roommates also started ordering it. Well done!
@ti_am_i Yes, Taika needs to stay refrigerated at all times for freshness (similar to kombucha). The best before date is 5 months from production but you'll probably drink it much faster 😉
seems like learned and experienced formulations here, I studied phytochemistry/psychoactives in regards to private and business/paid consultant research and adaptogens are an obvious focus for focus aids. Too rich for my pocket now but I will be watching for this brand at my local co op, I like the idea of using macadamia, Brasil nuts would be a good nut to work into a blend. I think your endeavor will be successful! and an alternative branding as well could easily transcend the major marketplace. pretty much Awesome!
Well done Kalle and Michael! Tried out the product last summer. Have the products developed since then and what's next in terms of flavors or "coffee meets x"-combos?
@rudi_skogman Thanks Rudi! Yeah, I took a look at our change log: we've made 22 iterations to the recipe since last summer and changed the packaging completely. The coffee is so much better than last summer, even if I say so myself 🤠
We have a lot of ideas in the pipeline, including non-coffee products. One that I've been working on for a while is a zero-sugar macadamia chocolate milk that is insanely tasty 🍫
@tony_francis Thanks Tony! We brew our coffee using a proprietary process that combines the best of hot and cold brewing techniques to maximize flavor and extraction.
I've had the chance to try Taika a number of times (including a precious delivery to my Burning Man camp) and I must admit that it's the best canned coffee product I've ever had. Not only does it taste great but it makes you feel absolutely amazing! I cannot wait to have some more soon 😋
Thanks @taylormajewski! The key difference is that Taika is first and foremost delicious coffee, whereas Soylent is a breakfast that also includes your morning coffee.
