Hi all 👋🏽 I'm Raj, Co-Builder of Solo AI Website Creator. Excited to share the launch of Solo with the Product Hunt community!
Freelancing and side hustles are the fastest growing business segment in the world but setting up a website when you’re ready to grow is still hard. I know this first-hand — during the pandemic, I wanted to set up a simple website to offer free chess tutoring but realized there was no easy way to do so. Not to mention, it’d have cost at least $20 a month plus other fees!
With Solo, we wanted to make building a website easy, fast, beautiful and free. By using AI to help craft the content and curate the images, we are democratizing access to solopreneurs so you can focus on building your business.
Out of the gate, Solo has the key features you need to grow your business:
🎨 Create a beautiful website by answering just a few simple questions
➡️ Import reviews and more from your existing web presence
💬 A contact form so your customers can contact you
📈 Configure your Google Analytics so you can see your traffic as you grow
📅 Add a scheduling link such as Calendly so customers can book with you
🖼️ Personalize by uploading your custom images or search via our Unsplash catalog
🌐 Connect and host your custom domain entirely for free
We hope you give Solo a try and if you have any feedback, please contact me at raj@soloist.ai. I'll also be around to answer any questions.
@mobileraj I'm really excited about this 1.0 launch! My nephew is planning to build a business this summer while he stays with us. Solo is going to be perfect for him!
@mobileraj I try many times to sign up with my email to save draft, but was impossible. Then I try with email address sign up am Listo! Gracias por su apoyo y por esta fantástica herramienta!
I was looking for ways to collaborate on the project the other day. I was disappointed when I didn't find an easy way to participate.
Any plans in making a public repo and supporting community contributions?
@filipe_esperandio1 Solo is not currently open source but this is something we may explore in the future. There is some work to support an open source project and I want to make sure that if we choose this route, we can support it accordingly.
@mobileraj The existing website needs to pull its content. It failed to do this. It created an almost static website and it was quite simple. There are many free website builders on WordPress anyway. It might be more useful if you work on a program that makes the existing website more elegant. For example, webflow does this. It protects web designers working with low code from wasting time while creating more dynamic websites.
@ahmetkara In onboarding, we provide an option to provide a link to an existing web presence and we do try to pull content. This is very much a work in progress and an area we are hoping to improve. We usually find that our customers started with an existing Instagram, Facebook or Yelp page.
RE: Wordpress and Webflow, our target user finds Wordpress, for example, way too technically complicated / difficult. Many in our customer base struggle with even buying a custom domain. Wordpress, Wix etc are great tools but we intentionally are trying to target a segment that needs something simpler.
In my personal opinion, the landing page is boring. For a platform that offers a tool to build a landing page or website, this is extremely important because it gives you an impression of what this tool can do.
There are many website builders out there, and I don't currently see the advantage of this service compared to other platforms. I'm not sure if I would really pay around $20 a month just to have an "AI" integration.
My personal suggestion would be to not build a standard landing page, but rather an excellent landing page.
@sgroiga Hi Gabriel - By landing page, do you mean the Solo website itself? There is a demo video of what Solo can build here:
I agree, we should probably link to some example Solo websites from our main homepage and link out to a demo video. We'll do that soon, thanks for this feedback.
Note, regarding cost, Solo is free.
Solo is the quickest and simplist path to a landing page Ive ever seen. Tested it and was BLOWN AWAY by how fast you have something usable. Ive built websites the traditional way and have tried website makers like webflow, wix, wp, ect.
So many businesses could benifit from a simple landing page with contact info. Unlike a lot of the others tools for this, solo gets you the outcome you need without having to fiddle with design and copy so much.
I've had a chance to experiment with this - nice and simple. Super easy to get started. (Quick note: the Youtube video description has a broken link to the soloist.ai site)
congrats on the launch, solo ai website creator looks like a neat tool for solopreneurs. considering the varying needs of such businesses, how customizable is the design process through your platform, particularly in industries that may require more specific functionalities?
@mashy Hi Albert - The Solo websites are fairly customizable. It's not meant to be a replacement to Wordpress, Wix or other. If you need that level of fidelity, those tools are great but most users need something simple to supplement their existing Facebook Business or Yelp page or other. Are there specific things you'd like to see or add?
Hey @mobileraj, Congrats on the launch!
Solo AI Website Creator looks awesome 👏
To the Solo team: How does Solo ensure the websites it creates are unique and tailored to each user's brand?
@madmanick Hi Manick, good question, there are a few things we do in trying to deliver a unique website for every user:
1. We allow the user to import their existing web presence (eg an IG, FB or Yelp page etc). This isn't perfect but we do attempt to scrape the page and use this content as context as part of our AI prompt in generating the new content for the different sections in your website.
2. We have a range of sections, themes, layout options and more. We randomize this with each site generation so the style looks uniquely different.
3. Something we're not yet doing but we're exploring randomizing the temperature (a Generative AI setting) to get more diverse text that is outputted when users request sites being generated for similar services
4. We pull a large set of images that could be used for your website and then randomly pick.
There are other general parameters that can influence the text being generated and that's based on the user's input to questions like what is your site about and where is the business based etc.
All of the above isn't perfect but we did have an internal goal to make each site feel as unique as possible. This continues to be a work in progress but you should expect that this will only improve and of course, we recommend that the customer use the initial site as a draft from which they can further manually edit to personalize to their own authentic voice.
Interesting project! However I agree that the current landing page is rather unexciting, in particular no links to templates or websites created with solo (and the corresponding prompts). No link to YouTube tutorials/demo.
I imagine (and hope) all this will follow on the next months
@to_p Hi Torsten - the first Solo thumbnail above links to a YouTube demo so you can get a feel of Solo:
This is an older blog post that also shares more about the technical stuff involved in building Solo if you're interested in prompts etc: https://blog.mozilla.org/en/mozi...
Hope that helps and thx for your support.
@shushant_lakhyani We had 4 goals in the design choices and construction of Solo:
1. Simple - By design, there are less choices and less editing fidelity. This isn't an oversight, but we found that the non-technical or non-designer audience to get overwhelmed by many options and settings whether Wix, Squarespace or other
2. Fast - The vast majority of sites are started but never finished. This is in-part b/c it's so hard to curate images and write content but also related to #1, you see dozens of design choices and you can't make up your mind. We wanted the experience to be really fast and w/ Solo, you can be up and running in minutes.
3. Beautiful - Our intent for Solo was to have a website for your business. We spent a lot of energy making sure the result looked great on both the desktop and mobile. We even added light-weight animations to your generated site to give it a super polished feel. Our goal was that you should be able to get the premium experience you'd get working with an agency but yourself.
4. Free - We surveyed dozens of website building tools and found that each and every one of them charge for connecting and/or hosting a custom domain. We made this free. We'd like to Robinhood this category as we want to support solopreneurs especially when they are early in their journey. As of now, we're not aware of any other way to connect and host a custom domain for free.
Hope that provides some insight in how we tried to differentiate.
Congrats on the launch @mobileraj!! It looks great and is so easy to use! I've already recommended to a few friends building websites now for their side hustles.
Sounds amazing! Great work, I will definitely use this in the future! On what did you teach it? Will it also be able to optimise for conversion? And how will it do that?
@mcsnackyu Hi Tim de jong - We use OpenAI to craft the initial draft of text for the generated website. We use Unsplash to curate images for the site. The designs are templates we built that we randomize. There are enough layout options plus colors, fonts and more, that the end-result is a unique experience that you can further edit to make it reflect your own authentic voice or business. We do use some cleverness with our prompting in an attempt to generate optimized output but the SEO industry in general is in major flux right now w/ Google's AI answers + Gen AI content flooding the web etc etc that in general, getting your site ranked is going to involve a lot more work then simply optimizing keywords so ultimately the solopreneur is still responsible for driving traffic to their website.
Over the coming months, quarters, we're exploring way to help drive growth via ads against the Mozilla Ad Network (as we're a Mozilla Innovation Project). It's still early but that's potentially one channel.
