ROOM — A Personal Space for The Open Office

At ROOM, we’re reimagining the modern workplace. Our first product, ROOM One, is a soundproof booth that helps you get things done. It’s engineered with recycled plastic bottles to do more by using less, and it’s easy to move around and assemble. We ship flat and sell direct to keep costs low, making ROOM One the first to solve noise at scale.

We have these in both AngelList offices (SF and NY) and they're a blast. Well-ventilated (we added extra fans for comfort) and well designed, they fit into almost any office environment. Much better than yacking to your mother in the middle of the office. 😅

@nickabouzeid LIFE SAVER. Worst thing is not being able to find a room for a scheduled call or meeting.

@nickabouzeid We are so proud to have AngelList as a customer, and very happy to hear that you're getting good use out of our product! :)

@rrhoover I agree - in general, people unnecessarily hog meeting rooms to eat lunch, have a personal conversation or any # of things.

A product of the scourge of open office floor plans. Why can't we just give employees their own offices?

@hayden_evans I get what you're saying. I work in an open-space, so I know I could use a quiet place sometimes, but I also love not to to 100% of the time alone in my office. I think this product is a kind of easy solution to that.

I work at a co-working space on a regular basis and this is a great product to have. While open work spaces are a good development for the office, privacy is often overlooked. This is a good solution for looking for an empty conference room.

Awesome product, much needed for open office environments! What are some of the big challenges you guys have run into along they way? 🔥🔥🔥

@sebfeed May just be a box at the end of the day, but we had to obsess over all of the details to get it just right. What you see today took tons of iterations to strike the right balance between ventilation, soundproofing, weight, good lighting, easy assembly, etc.

Funny project 😀, never understood open-space offices - really decreases productivity and work quality to my mind.

How well does it block sound in the other direction? (If I were to yell while inside of one would others hear me?) Though there's no way I can afford one, I would love something like this as a recording booth...
Quentin Lemaire
I love the idea. I work in a beautiful open-space, so I know how sometimes it is difficult to find a place to make a phone call without bothering anyone (how many times did some of us had to lock themselves in the bathroom?). It looks beautiful and functional, bravo! I'd love to try one of them.

After using the ROOM in a knowtel space and in NOLA for Collision conf they provide a great essential mix of function and comfort and really do a good job of isolating sound from around you. There also is a small fan which does a good job of keeping the air inside fresh.

Pros:

Room is a booth that really helps focus in a open environment in an elegant and non-claustrophobic way.

Cons:

The outlet placement is somewhat unintuitive.

I think what most people don't realise is how amazingly comfortable such booths FEEL. I have had a different booth installed at my open office and it was such a pleasure to lock myself in it and be able to focus my full attention on my work without the constant unconscious need to monitor my environment which people are burdened with in open offices. I was surprised how much more at ease, safe, comfortable and cozy I felt when I was there and as a consequence much more productive.

I don't understand why they didn't go with getaroom.com.

Funny what mad american millennials can create.

Pros:

Might be comfy for someone

Cons:

Looks like a booth for an outlaws or derelicts

Rob

Cost savings ($3500 vs $4500+ for most others) is mostly achieved through recycled material and looser construction, like the plastic door that magnetically adheres. Comes in flat packs as if it were Ikea furniture. These are all good things IMO. I had a chance to demo this product in person in multiple locations and was interested in buying a half dozen for my company. They said the product could take as long as 3+ months to arrive, lol? You're not scaling or solving anything if it takes a Q to fulfill an order. There are others similarly priced like Talkbox that don't have huge fulfillment issues, but they don't look as nice :)

Pros:

Great looking, seems effective and is lower cost than most competitors

Cons:

3 month lead time, floppy doors

I've never seen such a horrible sales team/process. We've been trying to purchase a phone booth for room for over a week - we can't get any responses from the sales team, on intercom, phone, etc. It's like they've gone out of business - you can get them to reply if you create a new intercom chat but they never follow up after the first message. Absolutely horrible, we'll buy from someone else.

They seem a bit small/cramped

Used these at the Collision Conference in Nola. Amazing!

@mzuvella Awesome so glad that you had a chance to try out the product already!
