I've seen this type of initiative at PH in the past. It inspires me a lot because it makes something valuable that seems worthless.
@ugur2nd that's the whole idea! land in California has gotten to be super expensive and people don't realize how much income or other use they could get from their existing backyard!
Hey Product Hunt! Thanks, @mwseibel for Hunting us! @brian_bakerman and I are super excited to share the housing factory we’ve opened up in Oakland to bring more backyard homes (ADUs) to folks across the Bay Area.
New California laws have made it much easier to build a home in your backyard to rent out, host your family in, or use as a home office, but it’s still far too expensive and too complicated for most homeowners to do.
Rent the Backyard is the easiest way to install a backyard home as quickly and cost-effectively as possible. We make a fixed bid for your project and handle all of the permits with your city, build your backyard home in our factory to minimize disruption, install your unit on a permanent foundation, connect you to utilities (electric, water, sewer), and even help you find your first tenant if you’d like to rent the unit out.
We build each backyard home in our factory using a sustainable building material called Cross-Laminated Timber, automating and streamlining our procurement, production, and delivery using custom software. These innovations allow for our units to be higher quality, 40% cheaper, and twice as fast to assemble compared to existing backyard homes.

@webshowing we usually do an "all in" price for customers who want one or two units in their backyard -- email hi@rentthebackyard.com with a few details (location, if utilities already exist, any photos you have of the site) and we can see what type of discount we'd be able to offer for a big order like that :)
If you want to remove the ADU, do you assist with that? For example: if you change your mind, if you're moving and want to bring the ADU with you (after securing a permit at your new place), or if potential buyers want it gone?

@james_afino We do a permanent installation so that your backyard home can be included in an appraisal alongside your existing home. Since we build to all of the latest CA building codes most backyard homes we build will actually outlast your existing home!
Hey guys great product idea! I definitely see renting out parts of your property becoming more and more 'of a thing'. The house looks nice too, honestly bigger than most condos in downtown Toronto and probably a fraction of the cost.
I do know there are quite a few competitors picking up in this space and I wanted to ask, what in your opinion makes you different?
@shesmaddie Hi Maddie! We're really focused on pushing costs down for customers by building more efficiently. We've spent the last year writing software and opening a factory where we can really optimize all of the little things -- pushing costs way down and making delivery a lot faster for homeowners too :))
@spencer_burleigh thanks for the reply! If I'm wearing my consumer hat: cost and time savings would be a big factor for me. I also really like the eco-friendly angle.
