Peek surfaces technology news in the form of tweets. Sources include TechCrunch, The Verge, Engadget, The Guardian, Ars Technica, and more. Data is fetched via Twitter API. Tweet selection and ranking is automated.
@anna_0x Glad you like it, Anna! Yup, the criteria for selecting tweets in the Top view is based on social signals such as likes, retweets, and mentions (links to the news story). The ranking algorithm is identical to the one used by Reddit / Hacker News (https://medium.com/hacking-and-g...).
For the last 3 names, tidbits has been the first page I open. So much so I have block it to nudge myself back to work.
Curious on the front-end redesign, why go beyond simple text links?
Love the site. Congrats on relaunch.
@rmateu Thanks for the feedback, Roberto! We experimented with and without the publisher icon and in the end decided to include it. We feel it helps identify the publisher without hurting readability too much.
Morning Reader has been a critical part of me keeping up to date on everything that's happening in startups and tech. Looking forward to this new iteration!
Curious about why decide to go with more content than Brief? Brief felt finite and that made it possible to catch up on stories really quickly. In this day and age everything feels like it'll never end so Brief really felt different.
I would be great imo to limit the amount of stories to ~10 in Latest. I really do like the simplicity of Brief being able to see both the top and latest in one screen. I don't have a lot of time in the morning so adding more content just eats away at that.
Also, what will happen to Brief?
@iamhenrym Hey Henry! I understand your concern. For a quick glance what I recommend is to use the Top view. It is very similar to the classic Brief view, and is also limited to 10 stories. The Latest view is better suited for when you want to spend more time exploring.
The Brief site will soon point to Tidbits. Thanks for the feedback!
Been using daily Morning Reader/Brief for many years and really loved it. Tidbits looks even better so thanks a lot!
One feature request: I'd love a way to permanently remove those low-quality tech publications with atrocious clickbait headlines like Forbes or Cnet.
@nckh_ Thanks for the hint, Greg! We'll take note. We may decide to completely remove certain publishers if quality is low, or at least show them less often or with less prominence.
Huge fan for years, thank you for your hard work! I worry this UI change takes away from what made Brief great, and I'd love the option to revert to its old look and feel. Would you mind providing the Brief UI as an alternative for those who still prefer it (a la old.reddit.com)? Thanks again :)
@ronaldweissjr Thanks for the feedback, Ronald! That would make front-end code management more complex. Anyway we will collect more user feedback before we make a definite decision.
I've used this product every day for a long time now, thanks for an amazing free product! That being said, I think this new version is a downgrade and change for the sake of it. Mainly due to the fact that now each story / article has been condensed in width and has been given more space between each. I love being able to digest multiple stories quickly on the previous version, now I have to scroll more to see everything. Secondly, dark mode makes complete sense for this product. The removal of this is a huge shame!
@apspencer Thanks for the feedback, Andrew! We will think about your concern and consider the possibility of condensing the layout. Btw, we have just added support for dark mode.
