I'm one of the contributors to koudoku (a competing ruby/rails gem) and I can only say that @zrail's work on Payola is inspiring. It is really well thought out and his experience clearly shows in the design.

Pete is too modest to mention this himself, but he's the author of the canonical book on how to best integrate Stripe + Rails: "Mastering Modern Payments". If people are having trouble getting setup with Stripe, this is the book that Stripe recommends to straighten them out.
