@hamza_afzal_butt Thanks!
Hey everyone,
I’m Michael, one of the creators of NotCommon. You know that uneasy feeling when you’re not sure if a website or social media profile is legit or just a scammer in disguise? We’ve been there too. It really hit home when a friend got duped by an impersonation scam, and we thought, “There’s got to be a better way to navigate this!”
So, we built NotCommon. Our goal is to make the internet a bit safer and give everyone some peace of mind while browsing.
We’d absolutely love for you to give it a try and share your thoughts. Your feedback means a lot and will help us make NotCommon even better.
Thanks for checking it out!
@gchiaren@michaelrpierce@hamza_afzal_butt Congratulations on the launch of NotCommon! This browser extension is a brilliant solution for enhancing online safety and preventing impersonation scams.
@gchiaren@michaelrpierce@annaho2000 Appreciate it, AnnaHo! We'd be grateful if you could take a look and let us know any areas where we can improve further.
@owenfar Thanks so much!
Regarding our process, there’s currently some manual work involved in the website verification piece. You can see our current process here: https://notcommon.com/how_notcom...
We’re developing solutions to automate this process using registrar information and providing options for people to self-verify. For now, human verification is still part of the equation.
We’ve started with common impersonation targets like banks, charities, shipping companies, etc., and we’ll continue to expand as we grow.
We want to introduce more alerts on known spam, but the problem is with AI it is so easy to make convincing impersonating fake sites and social media profiles, it was easier to role out a list of what we verify for the MVP. Having said that, more to come! ;)
@gchiaren@michaelrpierce@hamza_afzal_butt This looks fantastic! The all-in-one verification feature is like having a personal bodyguard for our social media accounts. Definitely a much-needed tool in today’s digital landscape. I am sure users are going to like it.
Consider adding a feature that alerts users when they follow new accounts to ensure they're verified right from the start.
Best of luck with NotCommon! 🚀
A must-have tool for every net & social media user it seems. Don't know why I can't play the video. So excuse me for asking. Does Not Common also block the suspicious accounts?
A great tool especially for those who are not digital natives - I can see my parents would benefit from something like this. I checked out the website, and I found the top followers page. I can see how even though someone like Mr. Beast has 317M subscribers on YouTube, it's only about 200~M verified by your platform. How did you verify all these millions of users?! That's pretty incredible.
Congrats on launching this tool @hamza_afzal_butt and team!
@hamza_afzal_butt@tonyhanded Actually, that is because you discovered a bug! 😅
The following info on each platform is collected with APIs, so we're not actually making a determination on which followers are real... yet.
Would be cool if this took into account bot following or potential bot followings because an account may be “verified and valid” but the trust that they are gleaming, comes from the size of their following, which may be fake
Congratulations. This is awesome! I've been waiting for a tool like this for some time that helps connect and verify profiles, using links to validate the user's various online identities.
@neolocus Thanks! Next, we’ll work on allowing users to self-verify their own websites, using AI to generate alerts when something appears suspicious, and making the platform more community-driven. This way, everyone can help report what’s real versus fake.
@jabari_zuri Thanks! We aim to bring peace of mind to everyone, including non-tech-savvy individuals like the elderly who are often targeted by phishing scams, so we wanted something simple and easy to look for.
Congrats on the launch! 🤩 As an overthinker with a fear of falling for scam websites, I think this is truly helpful. I don't have to manually search on google 'is this [site] legit' 😆 Amazing concept, functionality, and simplicity! Kudos to the team! 👏🏻
NotCommon is such a valuable tool for improving online safety! Verifying profiles across platforms is a game-changer for avoiding scams and fake account. Thanks to the team for making this much-needed solution accessible! 👏 Can’t wait to see how this evolves!
@carmen_judson What an age we live in! Unfortunately, everyone with influence becomes a target.
Carolyn Wozniacki was impersonated, and journalists picked up misattributed quotes. Even tennis players aren’t safe anymore, which is frustrating for everyone. https://x.com/CaroWozniacki/stat...
@ititov_agency Thanks! Well the product itself is a browser extension, so as you are browsing around to different websites and profiles, you'll see a little green dot saying that the thing you are on is Legit/Real.
If you are asking about the website, yeah it's set up a little bit like a search engine, just because we want people to be able to search and quickly see the "online footprint" of someone like https://notcommon.com/dwayne-joh...
@ititov_agency Thanks!
Right now, our primary focus is on highlighting authenticity to help people avoid impersonation scams.
That said, as we gather more data, there’s also a fascinating opportunity for discovery down the line.
