The free Virtual Zoom Mute button for Mac stares lovingly at you from the top right of your Mac menu bar. The simple one click toggle lets you mute and unmute from anywhere. It stays synced with Zoom and will be your new best friend.
@magnuson Right?! I had too many unfortunate Zoom mute situations (although not as unfortunate as Mr. Toobin) so I paired up with a friend to build the app. I wrote about my worst #mutefail here: https://www.mutemepls.com/blog/m...
Like many of you, I now spend a lot more time on Zoom calls. When someone calls my name and I need to unmute, it’s a race. If I’m standing at the ready, then maybe I can unmute quickly. If I don’t, bad things happen.
My coworkers start wondering if I’m paying attention. Then someone says… “Paul, you’re on mute!” I look dumb. I don’t get the promotion. Damn you Zoom!
I needed a way to unmute that was quick, reliable, and idiot proof. I wanted it always in the same place; clearly telling me my mute status. Something I knew I could always click no matter what window I was in and even if Zoom was minimized. And it needed to stay in sync with Zoom since I used all different methods to mute: sometimes I mute from Zoom, sometimes I use a hotkey, and occasionally, if they dare, the host mutes me. So I grabbed a friend, we launched müteme, and we built a Virtual Mute Button for Mac.
I'd love to have you download the free virtual mute button and let me know how it changes your Zoom life.
@wickerpedia@_jacksmith Thank for the question. Here's my (lengthy 😅 ) thoughts:
1. I often have the focus on a window other than Zoom. For example, if I'm taking notes in Notion or reviewing mocks in Adobe XD I can't use the spacebar.
2. Maybe it's just me but I like the on/off paradigm more than the push to talk. What is this Nextel?! 😉
3. We'll soon add other video conference tools and I like the idea of having a consistent mute status icon always staring at me regardless of the tool.
4. One of the reasons this Virtual Button isn't just a mute toggle (there are many apps out there that just toggle the mic on/off) but instead is a true application that syncs with the Zoom mute status, is so you can use any of the Zoom mute methods (or be muted by the host) and the button updates. Depending on the meeting and what I'm doing I sometimes use the virtual button, the zoom mute button, the hotkey (CMD+Shift+A) bound to my F19 key, OR the physical light-up mute button.
UPDATE: Zoom for Microsoft is now in QA. We'll be adding support soon and I'm prolly too lazy to do another launch on ProductHunt so I'll just notify you folks here!
@dejans Whoops, sorry about that! TL;DR I will be sending you an email shortly. Thank you for letting me know!
The long story:
I see what happened...there are two subscriber email lists. An older one for general updates that's in the footer of the website, and then another one for the virtual button that's on the Product Hunt landing page. Looks like about 30 people started browsing the website AFTER they left the landing page. Then they signed up (unknowingly) on the wrong subscriber list. I'll send the download info for the Virtual button instructions to the old list so everyone has it! (And get rid of the confusing double email list thing.)
Hi, this seemed like a useful button indeed, but after installing, this somehow—when clicking on the button—activated my CloudApp menubar item and tries to create a screenshot. Also, the mute/unmute stopped working after a couple of times. I do use Bartender 3, which may be the reason why this is happening?
@leo_at_zapier Secret feature? Mute and screenshot. 😀
For real tho...thanks so much for trying the app and reporting. We're adding a "report a bug" button that sends us the log so we can better diagnose issues. For now I'll log it since there is a chance that Bartender and the müteme app are colliding somehow. 🤔
@leo_at_zapier Hey Lionel we found and fixed a bug that was likely the culprit. If you still have the müteme app installed then go ahead and open it and it will update. Then it would be great if you could give it another try.
Hey @wickerpedia, thanks for considering me! I have upgraded to Big Sur and Bartender 4 in the meantime, but unfortunately the issue is exactly the same. I have CloudApp installed and whenever I click on Muteme while I have a Zoom meeting open, it tries to create a screenshot
@wickerpedia@leo_at_zapier Wuh?! I thought our latest version would have addressed it. Sorry about that! I'm gonna have to install CloudApp and see what's going on!
I wonder by any chance is the shortcut for taking a screenshot is CMD+Shift+A. 🤔 Because that's what our button sends Zoom to mute.
@wickerpedia@leo_at_zapier I installed CloudApp and it looks like Zoom and CloudApp use the same shortcut! It doesn't seem like CloudApp let's you edit the shortcut.
Zoom does so perhaps we could have you set a new shortcut in Zoom and then use that instead. I'll have to see if we can detect hotkey settings via the Zoom API, or add a setting where you can manually enter it.
