Momentum bridges a gap between what we know we should do, and what we actually do with our time. It’s here to help you zoom from big picture goals all the way down to what you’re doing today.
Hey, Product Hunt! I’m jumping in here to say our team couldn’t be more excited about our Product Hunt launch today. We built Momentum out of a desire to help folks focus on what matters and set better boundaries. Life is moving at a pace that makes it difficult to keep up. External demands frequently outpace our internal sense of direction. 🧭
Nudges and visual cues in Momentum remind you to shoot your shot, move your priorities forward, and chunk projects down. It guides you to focus attention on what matters by turning big-picture goals into actionable tasks. And it helps you shift perspective so that you get the right amount of clarity of purpose or clarity of action that you need in the moment. 🎯
Hustle is no longer needed if you’re planning right. Your life and personal goals need to be on your schedule. Period.
In building Momentum we were thinking: “Based on how humans are, how do we make it easier to make conscious choices to help us thrive?” Our answer was to bridge the gap between what we know we should do and what we actually do with our time.
Underneath the hood of Momentum is a lot of application of the best insights and practices from behavioral economics, positive psychology, habit formation science, and productivity. We have plans to build machine learning into Momentum, too, so that it can better spot your patterns and usage so that you can plan, do, and be better — “better” based upon what that means to you, not us or anyone else.
We’re offering folks who sign up via Product Hunt our standard 30-day free trial, plus a 20% discount on your monthly or annual subscription for the first year.
Your monthly payment will be $8/mo rather than $10/ mo, for a total annual savings of $96 in the first year (versus $120). If you choose an annual subscription, that’s $80 for the first year, or $20 off the usual $100 annual rate. (After the first year at the discounted rate, your subscription will convert automatically to the standard $10/mo or $100/year.) 🤓
We’re excited to see your feedback — as well as any input or support to help us keep improving —- and seeing more people ready to make the life-changing decision to commit to their projects. Thanks for joining the nearly 1,000 customers we already have and helping us build Momentum together!
@charliegilkey hello! This looks like a great tool. What email address can I use to reach out to support, please? I've run into a few issues and can't find any information/links on the app to contact customer support. Thanks.
@charliegilkey@melmelc Hi Melissa! You can always reach out to us for help at support@hellomomentum.app, or check out our blog at https://www.hellomomentum.app/blog which includes tutorials and more info on how to use the app! Please let us know at the above email address what your questions are and we’ll be happy to get back to you right away.
@charliegilkey I'm so proud to be part of the team that is bringing this to the world. We've gotten momentum on Momentum from our wonderful community at Productive Flourishing (where Momentum started) and we're honored to be able to bring it to Product Hunt and get to know this community here even more. One of the things I love the most about our lovingly created product is that it works so well for someone like me who identifies as neurodiverse (I have a history of TBIs that have impacted cognition). It helps keep me calm and focused on the things that truly matter. You gotta love it when your own product helps you. :-) A really big THANK YOU to everyone here on PH for your support. <3
@naveed_rehman Thanks for the support! Momentum helps us work backward and forward simultaneously - great for all planning types: top-down, bottom, up, and everything in between! Appreciate you checking taking a look.
@naveed_rehman Thanks for watching the video, Naveed! I love that you saw that approach and hope you take the chance to try Momentum out for yourself. As @maghan_haggerty mentioned, Momentum lets you plan top-down and bottom-up, depending on what works for your brain. That's one of the things I love so much about the methodology: it isn't so rigid, but it provides some great constraints and boundaries while still letting us be creative. Thanks again for the support!
@naveed_rehman Thanks for checking Momentum out, Naveed! We're here for any questions or feedback you may have. As @angela_wheeler1 said, Momentum is nimble while also providing the structure you need to get your best work done.
@naveed_rehman Thanks, Naveed! As @maghan_haggerty said, while many people will use the top-down, working backward approach, Momentum is actually set up so that you can be a bottom-up, moving-forward planner just the same.
Additionally, part of the magic of Momentum is that you can anchor to and only use the time horizons that work best for you. Some folks just need a weekly-level view of what's going on and can run from there. Others like to mix and match daily and monthly.
One of the amazing things about Momentum is that we’ve been able to build it with our community. From all the feedback we’ve used to refine the physical planners and the method over the years, to the Kickstarter in January, to the beta release and feedback this spring, our community has continually stepped up and offered feedback and suggestions, many of which we’ve already incorporated into the Momentum you see today.
And there are still more features we can’t wait to build into Momentum (for our user community, of course, and selfishly, because we want them, too!).
Here’s a taste of some of the features we’re considering for future releases:
* Recurring events: this is our next big feature release; supporting recurring events and other actionables (like routine tasks) in the app. Enter it once, set the recurrence, and it appears every day or week or third Tuesday of the month.
* Calendar sync: we’ve already implemented version 1 of calendar sync with Google Calendar. We plan to do the same with Outlook and iCal.
* Planning workspace: a separate area (think mind map, but for Momentum Planning) for planning your best-work project, through all its time horizons, and either top down or bottom up. Once you have it exactly how you like it, one click populates it to your planner/dashboard pages. (And once there, our current drag-and-drop, defer, and archive features make it easy to update parts of the project when plans inevitably change.)
* Integrated onboarding: a step-by-step walkthrough of how to create your first project and see how easy that is to do in Momentum. This is the first step toward building full machine learning into the app, where it can identify patterns in how you use the app and how you plan, and make suggestions that help you improve. The next level of “productivity coach in your pocket.”
* Energy levels: We know that time is only one factor in creating your ideal schedule. We plan to add the ability to assign energy levels to events/tasks/project chunks, to help you indicate which of them require significant energy or attention, so you can plan those things when you have significant energy, and can plan recovery blocks around them when you need to.
These are just a few of the more significant features we’re excited to build into Momentum. We’re also doing regular smaller releases to squash bugs and add other requested features, (like the upcoming “duplicate” function we’re releasing very soon).
Your turn, Product Hunt!
Please let us know:
* Which of the features above are most important and/or exciting to you?
* What are some other features on your “planner wish list” you’d like to see Momentum include?
Your answers will help us continue to build the app that’s most useful to you.
@charliegilkey Yippee! Thank you for sharing what's on our roadmap. I'm personally incredibly excited about the machine learning we have on deck and our upcoming features around energy levels, because I know how different my energy is throughout the days and weeks and will help me with my planning, making sure I'm taking full advantage of my peak times and looking out for myself when I know my energy might not be so great. I'd love to hear what others are looking forward to or want to see!
@charliegilkey YES!!! We are here for ALL OF IT! I'm especially excited for the planning workspace! As a bottom-up planner the idea of a space to capture #AllTheThings is going to be so helpful!
@charliegilkey Sweet share Charlie! I am super excited for our future features and am looking most forward to the planning space and energy levels functions. Those two combined are going to make it easier to assess what needs to be done and when and use my TEA (Time, Energy and Attention) wisely.
I've had the opportunity to collaborate with this team over the past few months. Truly appreciate the amount of thoughtfulness and insight that have gone into this product. And I'm psyched that they've reached the point of sharing it with a broader audience. Nice work @angela_wheeler1@charliegilkey and crew!
@angela_wheeler1@turoczy Thanks for the comment! It's been great to *finally* get to work with you, too, rather than semi-annual bump-ins across Portland.
@charliegilkey@turoczy Thank you, Rick! It's been an honor for us to get the chance to collaborate with you and learn from you and the PIE community. We are always learning and it's going to help us continue to make Momentum better and better. :-)
@nicolaas_spijker thanks for checking us out, Nico! If you have any questions or feedback, we're all ears. Can't wait to hear what you think once you've given Momentum a spin.
@nicolaas_spijker Thank you, Nico! 🚀 We're really excited about Momentum. As the team mentioned, please do let us know if we can support you in some way as you start your planning. And, we love to hear what momentum you're seeing on your projects as you get into the app. We'd love to celebrate with you!
Ive been using Momentum since its beta, and Charlie's amazing products since the beginning (I am looking at my weekly planner sheet right now to get it ready for the week) this is an amazing product and I am so glad its finally launched and in other people's hands
Osheyana in Ops here, dropping in to give my 2 (or 3) cents. I feel like I need to say how incredibly important the Momentum Team has been to me over the last year that we’ve been working on this new journey into app-land. It’s wonderful, first of all, to be creating an app that’s dedicated to eliminating distractions and helping people follow the flow of their life. As someone who’s made 10,000 to-do lists in her life (in marker, on paper, of course), Momentum, and the methodology that’s baked in, has been a game-changer for me. I know what I need to do, I check it off, or I punt it to tomorrow’s list. I use a plethora of apps to help me maintain and keep track of the different projects and routines that are on deck, but a key to actually executing them is to connect the pieces in Momentum. No frills, no reminders inbox, no shiny things to distract me from why I’m there in the first place. The reminders app just won’t do it, and my Crayola-color-coded to-do lists would take 10x as long. It’s been a really nice transition. Also, “sparkly” is a theme option? Yes, please! I’ve leveled up because I know what’s on deck and I know what needs to get done. It feels good to be good at checking things off for once.
Moreover, and to the point, this team is a force I’ve never encountered before. The care and compassion that this team shows to each other and to the community is both motivating and heartwarming. Awe-inspiring, even. I can’t wait to see what else we dream up for this endeavor, and how we can continue to help people like me find their best work and focus on the things that really matter. I truly appreciate all of the incredible support we’ve received on our launch today and I’m stoked to be a part of this beautiful crew of makers and doers. 😁👏🏼🎉
@osheyana YOU! I love how you pointed out the "no frills, no reminders, no shiny things to distract" - it's so true. There are just too many apps and tools that take us away from our best work, Momentum gets us to it. Thank you for sharing your experience. It's truly an honor to work with you!
@osheyana I love how you explain how Momentum helps you! Thank you for sharing that sneak peek into Oshey land. "I’ve leveled up because I know what’s on deck and I know what needs to get done. It feels good to be good at checking things off for once." <--Yes, you have and it's been an honor to watch you do so. We're lucky to have your kick ass brain and heart on our team.
@osheyana Thank you for all the amazing support you have given during this launch! It's been great getting to watch you gain your own momentum in the world and on the team!
@alexisgrant00 Thank you for your feedback and insight Alexis. We really appreciate it and our main goal is to assist each Momentum user to truly focus on what matters most.
@alexisgrant00 Hey Alexis! The team and I appreciate you keeping the Momentum going with us! Especially enjoyed the callout about boundaries. As you know, one of our goals here and with our Momentum app is to avoid the burnout that can come from lack of boundaries and unrealistic expectations.
I’m a big fan of what Charlie and his team are doing with Momentum. Anything that can help us make more conscious choices that build momentum towards aligning our intentions with our attention is huge. Nicely done!
@mikevardy Thanks for your support Mike! Building momentum towards "aligning our intentions with our attention" is exactly what we're aiming to do with Momentum!
@mikevardy thanks so much for the thoughtful and kind response. Especially dig the part about aligning our intention with our attention. Couldn’t have said it better. 👏
@mikevardy Thanks so much for the support, Mike! Knowing how much you know in this space of productivity and what generally supports and helps people, having your vote of confidence means a lot to us!
@mikevardy Thanks so much! As we've discussed, we're trying to find the right balance of enough structure to do the lifting and alignment for you without too much that it becomes meta-productivity. It's tricky and worth trying nonetheless.
I'm having a lot of fun today getting to meet and get to know our new users. We are excited to hear from you about how Momentum is working for you. We truly want to see you get your best work out in the world and hope Momentum can support you in doing that. Let us know what projects you are working on, if you'd like to share.
I am so proud to be a Maker on the Momentum team because Momentum Planning has been a game changer for me over the last 4 years. Long before I was Team Momentum I was part of @charliegilkey and @angela_wheeler1 's Productive Flourishing community. They showed me that productivity isn’t simply a means of getting things done and checking items off a list but could be a path to a thriving life.
Pre Momentum Planning I would have multiple to-do lists for the different aspects of my life that didn’t work because:
* I’d have to continually rewrite my lists (beating myself up for all the things I didn’t get done)
* The list would hold tasks that would take me 15 minutes and some that were month-sized. There was no rhyme or reason. (likely the reason why things didn’t get to “done”)
* My lists focused more on the “shoulds” and “have tos” of work and life and little on the projects that I’d consider best work
Momentum addresses all these issues (and then some).
When I’m entering projects in Momentum I now think about the amount of time it will take me to realistically get something done (and that realistically can be a moving target some days). Instead of everything being on an endless and indecipherable list, it’s now organized by time horizon. And that shift between time horizons helps me get clarity on what needs to get done, why it needs to get done, and when it needs to get done (i.e. not everything needs to get done right now!).
And because everything is saved in the app, there’s no need to rewrite things over and over. If something needs to shift (because reality never seems to line up exactly as we plan) I can easily move things around in the app. There’s less beating myself up and more celebrating the wins. Because at Momentum we are all about celebrating the wins, big and small!
Momentum’s true magic is it’s centered around you. Think less about what is the correct way to use it and more about what best work projects you’ll move forward.
@charliegilkey@maghan_haggerty Awwww, Maghan, what a beautiful share about your journey from starting with us four years ago and realizing how much we love the human-centered approach to productivity to now being part of the team making this app. It truly is a testament to what we are doing, that we have long time friends and community members that want to join us on the team. <3
@maghan_haggerty I love this encapsulation of the approach and how it's changed planning and productivity for you! Even though we're on opposite sides of the top-down/bottom-up "divide" ;) (or maybe because of it!) it's great having your perspectives inform what we're doing with Momentum.
Thanks for being on the journey with us, @maghan_haggerty! I love that Momentum helps you do more of what sparks you and less of the shoulding that drains you.
Definitely my favorite new app of the year, and the first productivity app to get me excited in a while. Really excited about the future of this app, this team, and the community that will doubtless gather around it all.
@eric_grey Thank you! Favorite app of the year is high praise indeed! And hearing that Momentum is making someone excited about productivity is exciting!!
@eric_grey Loved seeing your thorough review -- and this is certainly mighty praise, as Maghan said! 🎉 So glad we can hopefully count you in as part of the Momentum community.
@maghan_haggerty Well, I'm a massive productivity nerd so I am a BIT easily excited by new apps. But this excitement is special, mostly because the technique and philosophy is so new. It's rare anymore to have a unique productivity app emerge!
@eric_grey We love productivity nerds around here. :-) Thank you for the high praise, feedback, and support. They really mean the world to us. We are also incredibly excited about where the app is and what all we have in store for upcoming feature releases. I'm especially excited about the machine learning piece of it that's on our roadmap. <---Yeah, I'm a nerd too!
Love Momentum -- been using it since the beta. It keeps me on track with what I already promised myself I would be doing, instead of the thing my brain thinks I *should* be doing right in the moment.
It helps me plan out quarterly projects and then break those down into monthly projects and in turn break those down into things I'm going to get done during the week, which is my planning comfort zone.
@rukristin_feminist_scrapbooker Really love hearing this kind of feedback — especially since you’ve been with us on this journey from the start. It’s great to get specific stories about how the app works for you, and which planning horizon is your jam! We’re also big fans of the Weekly planner as a starting point :-)
@rukristin_feminist_scrapbooker Thank you for the shout out and support! Are you in my brain?! LOL. When you said "what my brain thinks I *should* be doing right in the moment" I chuckled, because this is such an apt description for me, as well, and when I know I definitely need to be following my Momentum plan. We really appreciate you being with us throughout the beta and beyond. :-)
@rukristin_feminist_scrapbooker Hey Kristin! Back in the old days, I used to call a benefit of the Momentum Planning Method 'strategic presence': because you planned ahead, you could be in *this* moment and knew that if something came up, there was another moment for it.
Your "It keeps me on track with what I already promised myself I would be doing, instead of the thing my brain thinks I *should* be doing right in the moment" captures the sentiment of strategic presence.
I stopped using it because it was unnecessary for most learners, but you've been with us for a while so I'll cheat and use it with you. :)
@rukristin_feminist_scrapbooker I'm with you - I love how the different time horizons help us stay on track and not get diverted by the "shoulds"!! As we've both heard @charliegilkey say countless times — when you need clarity of purpose shift up (to find the why) and for clarity of action (the how) shift down. Having line of sight into both the next highest time horizon and the next lowest in Momentum helps us stay in the here and now. I can't wait to see where the momentum you've created takes you next!
@rukristin_feminist_scrapbooker Weekly is my favorite horizon for taking action, for sure. And love that Momentum links those weekly projects to the larger horizon's projects and goals. Thanks for the support, Kristin!
Wow…Momentum is an amazing App that not only organizes your life, but also has a”How” factor that encourages you to stay on task. It also simplifies life in a way where tasks, projects, events, etc. are complete efficiently in a timely manner. Congratulations to you @charliegilkey and your team for a planner app I could actually use.
However, at this time I am best able to write in a calendar; so, I wonder if your planner is in a book/calendar form. If not, how can I effectively use your work sheets? Thank you!! And best wishes!!
@charliegilkey@mrsclark Thank you Krisann for your support! There is no right or wrong way to plan, just the way that works best for you! If paper works best for you right now, we respect that! Regarding the worksheets, we're planning to roll out some content on the Momentum blog (https://www.hellomomentum.app/blog) in the coming months around how to use some of our popular worksheets to help with the planning process (no matter what way you plan). Stay tuned for more soon!
@charliegilkey@mrsclark Such a kind and circumspect response Krisann. Really can’t thank you enough taking the time to support us! One thing that’s actually amazing about the app is you can print off any page / or calendar view. Meaning you can print off the Weekly Planner and keep a digital version with you throughout your week, if that works best for you. It’s a “yes, and” situation. The best of both worlds.
Congrats on the Product Hunt launch! I'm a huge fan of Charlie, Angela and the Productive Flourishing team. This new Momentum product is a fabulous way to leverage and expand upon the great successes they have had with the paper version. I'd advise anyone looking for that extra something to sort out the chaos of daily life and get from fuzzy goals to actionable reality to check out this app!
@terry_starbucker it’s fabulous to hear about folks ready to soar with moving from the paper planners to digital. We definitely all need help rising above the chaos of daily life (like Maghan said below, so well said!) if you ever need help with the app, you can always reach out at support@hellomomentum.app 😊
@terry_starbucker This means a lot coming from you! Thank you for your continued support. This: "get from fuzzy goals to actionable reality" ---> YES!!! It's a work of love for us to keep evolving this methodology and get the opportunity to support more people. We never could have gotten this far without our amazing success pack. <3
@terry_starbucker thank you so much for your support, Terry! It takes a village, as they say, and we're so glad you're a part of ours. Love this: "get from fuzzy goals to actionable reality". You nailed it!
Congrats on an amazing launch! This feels like such a great extension of Productive Flourishing's approach that will help a lot of people, well, flourish!
@aminamoreau Thank you, Amina! That's our hope for Momentum - that it improves and extends and enriches the methodology, and more than those things, makes it accessible and actionable for those who've not been well served by the standard productivity offerings. Thanks for your support!
@aminamoreau Thank you, Amina! Here's to flourishing! We really appreciate your support and do hope that we get the opportunity to help more and more people as Momentum grows. It's our hope to meet people where they are at and gently guide them with some helpful boundaries they can put in place from day one to get them to do their best work. <3
I was blessed to be a part of this app's beta launch, and it's a game-changer for my productivity. I've used Asana, docs, physical planners, the usual, but Momentum is built in a way that provides as much clarity (in time, task, and priority) as it does scheduling. I'm a fan of Charlie's book and company, and Momentum is great at distilling his systems and teaching into a fast, effective app that makes sense. No other planner, digital or physical, makes it so fast and easy to set goals and break them down into realistic timelines and actionable next steps. A great philosophy of usefulness, common sense, super smart features, and HEALTHY BOUNDARIES so you can actually focus and get the right work done. Highly recommended.
@banderaoutlaw Thanks so much for the wonderful review, James. It's exciting to hear about the ways that Momentum has been supportive for you. I really hear you on the realistic timelines and actionable next steps. Yes, please, all the time! And, the healthy boundaries....that's what we're all about here. :-) Honored to hear this and we are always open and excited to hear about your wins for what matters to you.
@banderaoutlaw Thanks for the testimonial, James!
"No other planner, digital or physical, makes it so fast and easy to set goals and break them down into realistic timelines and actionable next steps."
As you've experienced, one of our guiding principles is "how can we make this complex action something people can do in three clicks or fewer?" Having used tools like Asana, we know that, sure, you CAN defer entire projects -- it just takes WAY too many clicks and thinking. I always just wanted to one-two click to defer, archive, or delete a project.
Same for horizon shifting. Sure, it can be done. But it should be simpler.
I'm really excited about the project quickstart function that's on our roadmap because it's going to make the process even simpler.
Thanks for being with us from the beginning. If you like Momentum now, I think you're going to love where we're taking it.
@banderaoutlaw "fast, effective app that makes sense" — Yes!!! Here's to technology that works with us and how we work. So glad it is helping you get your best work done!
@banderaoutlaw Yessir, James! Healthy boundaries indeed. I think that's one of the things Momentum does so well that other apps/methods don't: help you recognize that getting EVERYTHING done isn't as important as getting the RIGHT THINGS done, and then actually help you do that. Thanks for the support!
I have been a fan and implementor of Productive Flourishing's methods for planning and prioritizing for over a decade. I am SO excited about this app that will make integrating the methodology into practice much more seamless.
@pamslim Thanks so much for the support! You know better than most how long we've been testing, refining, and teaching about the system since you've been with us from the jump.
@pamslim amazing to see people who have been into the planners on a long term basis now ready to run with the app! We’re so glad to have you in our success pack. 💫
@pamslim We appreciate you in a BIG WAY!! Thank you for being on this journey with us as it continues to evolve and we get the opportunity to support more people in getting done what matters to them. Here's to our collective thriving and the ripples we each get to make in the world by finishing our best work. <3
I really like this system and product. I've been using the paper version for years, now I'm using the app and the experience and results are even easier. Charlie and his team are great to work with mostly because 'they give a damn' and care. Great system, great team, great app.
@judith_tennant Thank you for taking the time to share what the Momentum planners — and now the app! — mean for you!!! We’ll keep caring. This kind of feedback makes it all worthwhile.
@judith_tennant Awww, thank you! We really appreciate your support and it's true, we care A LOT. I echo what @mary_clare_odonnell said that this kind of feedback is fuel for us. That we get to help people do their best work and focus on what matters to them (whether it's on the business side or personal side) is a joy for us. Thanks for being part of this journey with us and please do keep sharing your successes, so we can celebrate with you.
@judith_tennant Hey Judy so glad to see you're enjoying the system, the product and the team! Your loyalty is valued. Thank you for joining us here at Product Hunt.
@judith_tennant Thank you for this wonderful note. As @angela_wheeler1 shared, we do care A LOT. It means a lot to get that recognition. Our community is #1 for us and Momentum was built to make that path to your best work easier. So glad that has been the case for you! Please do keep sharing your successes so we can celebrate together!
@judith_tennant what nice feedback... thank you! We really do care and we're so glad it shows. We're happy the switch from paper to the app was a smooth one for you. Keep the momentum going. ;)
@carafnparrish Thank you for the support and encouragement! We are honored to be here on Product Hunt today and really grateful for all the wonderful feedback we have gotten. We're always happy to help if you ever have any questions or feedback while using the app. And, we love to hear about our community's celebrations about what they were able to accomplish, so hit us up with those if you'd like.
Momentum
