Microsoft has really stepped up their hardware design in the recent year, but my favorite feature: 14 HOUR BATTERY LIFE. 🔋
Jim Canto
@rrhoover I've never owned a MacBook ** gasp ** .. but this thing is beautiful. And, hell yeh, 14 hour battery?!? FINALLY!!
Sean Murphy
@rrhoover hardware is nothing compared to software. Where's their game there Ryan?
Mark Zajac
@sean_murphy @rrhoover If I can easily put linux on it,I'll be a happy camper.
Mark Zajac
@sean_murphy I'm not surprised. Easy access to the bash, unbelievable selection of desktop environments....what's not to like ;)
Kunal Bhatia
Hardware is a tough game to be in when you're competing directly with Apple. I don't see many developers switching to this, but I do hope more companies issue computers like this if they are PC only!
Oras Al-Kubaisi
@kunalslab Actually I think many developers will switch after the new Mac Book. Its too expensive for what it does. Also MS has finally integrated linux shell directly making it much easier for developers. I am a Mac user btw and looking to switch to Windows when the right hardware comes along and this one looks promising if there is a good support with it.
Kunal Bhatia
@orask fair point. As far as getting a powerful machine (which most devs I know want), we still don't know the pricing for the high-end model. Intel® Core™ i7 512GB SSD 16GB RAM Intel® Iris™ Plus Graphics 640 So let's revisit this when we find out this information. 😊 EDIT: see @jeroen_corthout's post about not being able to install Chrome. If you do any front-end development, that's a deal breaker.
Noah Kim
@orask @kunalslab I agree. If it wasn't for work providing a new macbook pro, my personal purchasing history of mac books would have ended with the latest generation. WAY too overpriced for what I consider several steps BACKWARDS. Yes I need MacOS, but I'd be perfectly happy with my desktop setup, and rocking a laptop like this for on the go.
Brian Lee
@orask yup it's that bash shell that makes Windows viable now

After Apple killed the MacBook Air, this is Microsoft's response You can read more on The Verge

@bentossell Such a huge opportunity for them, and they nailed it.
Jeroen Corthout ☕
Considered buying it, until I read this: "The tradeoff for those perks is that Windows 10 S doesn't let you install any software that's not from the Windows Store app market — which means that, at the very least, you won't be able to install the Google Chrome web browser."
Noah Kim
@jeroen_corthout Can't say for sure, but there's nothing indicating that you couldn't just install Windows 10 (home/pro) on this and be perfectly fine. It has the horsepower. Battery life might suffer a little.
Jeroen Corthout ☕
@wuss Just read that for $49 you can get to the Home/Pro version. Other than that they should give this for free, I feel very relieved.
Kesava Mandiga
@jeroen_corthout @wuss TechCrunch says that the upgrade to Windows 10 Pro will be free until the end of the year. So, some good news for early adopters. https://techcrunch.com/2017/05/0...
Noah Kim
@k3sava @jeroen_corthout really trying to find a reason why I shouldn't buy this. MacOS runs inside a VM pretty well afaik....
Jeroen Corthout ☕
@wuss @k3sava Anyone found more info on the more advanced versions? 4GB RAM is not going to cut it.
Niv Dror
Microsoft just released a touchscreen MacBook Air!
Jack Smith
I tested a Surface Book, a new Macbook pro and a Chromebook Pixel. I preferred the Surface the most. Solid specs, loved the detachable screen and included stylus and touch screen
Lee Wynne
Windows 10 is amazing, secure, stable and receives updates in the most seamless way ever. Said nobody, ever. That's always the problem with MS hardware, beautiful, but runs a shit OS.
Dan Preiss
Have any Mac users recently switched to Windows? Curious on what it's like to return to the other side.
Andreas Duess
@dan_preiss I use both - actually, we use Macs, Chromebooks and Windows laptops. The hardware might be fine, but using Windows is a pain in the proverbial, to this day. Weird and convoluted security protocols, stuff that should make sense doesn't, everything is harder than it needs to be. No thanks.
kurt braget
This is an answer to the MacBook Air? Lol. This is like somebody answering your question from 2008 because that's when the MacBook Air came out.
Sooraj Chandran
If some puts any mac OS into this I will but it right away. Looks like Microsoft is gonna give tough competition to apple.
Alex Sopinka

Great Macbook alternative for when you want to run a .NET development environment at full speed. Yes you can run Windows on OSX and yes you can run Visual Studio on OSX, but it's not the same as the full featured native version.

Pros:

Horsepower, sexyness, .NET development

Cons:

Not better in price than the Macbooks

Jay
Great product but as an IOS developer I can't really use it... but the wife needs one so i guess that justifies me buying a few of these in different colors and specs.
Sam Sabri
@jaybroni you could use Xamarin to do iOS dev?
Noah Kim
@jaybroni VM macOS runs pretty well I hear? I use a lot of mac only software too, so here's hoping..
Jay
@samsabri unfortunately apple doesn't allow that. You can build it using Xamarin on a PC but you still need a mac to compile and deploy to the app store.
Mark Zajac
Putting the privacy thing to the side for now, can I now say that Apple MB is so yesteryear? Love how this thing looks. Wonder if Linux will go on easily? I know, I know.
Allan Caeg
Microsoft spent years and $$$ to AVOID the laptop form factor... Makes you wonder: why now? Did they realize that the detachable keyboards and kickstands are a bad idea?
Simon St John
Looks awesome......just wondered: The fabric on the keyboard won't be good in a humid/tropical climate.....it will become quickly sweat affected and grimy-looking. Hopefully there is an option without it?
chthomos
I would go with the Winows Pro version. Windows S seems ok but I would like to run all windows apps and not only windows store ones. Apart from that it looks great!
Kesava Mandiga
@chthomos TechCrunch says the upgrade to Windows 10 Pro is free until the end of the year! Otherwise it's $49, which is a good deal too! :) https://techcrunch.com/2017/05/0...

Still can't really abide the weaknesses of Windows (for me personally) but hot damn has Microsoft's ID game been flawless lately
Arthur
If there is one area that few can critique in the Microsoft world, it is their Surface line. Of course you can't please everyone but most will agree that this is easily one of the nicest and like Panos said most balanced and thoughtfully engineered laptops to ever hit the market. Windows 10 I think still has some ways to go to be more intuitive but the Surface hardware if your passionate about hardware like Panos (and I), it really is beautiful.
oliver tho
Can we use this laptop as a laptop with stylus pen for drawing
