Hey Product Hunt!
Great to be back on here. Big ups to @erictwillis for hunting us 🙌
Openvid is a the easiest way for anyone to quickly record your screen, mic, and (optionally!) front-facing camera on any URL. Want to easily QA your new mock ups? Give feedback to a friend on their site? Create a quick tutorial for your product? Openvid let’s you do that for free without having to worry about video storage, upload time, or recording time limits.
YUUGE shout out to the rest of the team behind this @yoyo_thomas & @vhmth ⚡
This looks legit. I've previously used the TechSmith Snagit extension to record screencasts; but this looks a lot better. Minimalistic, but with the functionality that I need.
the ability to record a video and then quickly get a link to share it is really important here. With some other solutions I have to mess around uploading the video to my youtube account and wait for it to process etc.
@vhmth thanks for the video Vinay, very thoughtful. - You guys have already shipped more cool stuff with limited resources than many startups with millions $ in funding, so I'm excited to see how this continues to evolve.
@_jacksmith@vhmth also a big TechSmith Snagit user. Def gonna test this out. Do you know any good seamless tools to record system audio + standard audio for calls? I've actually used Snagit for this as well and even gone through the headaches of Soundflower...
@nwkwan Hi Nick - thanks for using Snagit! In the latest couple versions of Snagit for Mac recording system audio is pretty seamless. No more dependency on Soundflower. We just released Snagit 4 last week, if you want to check it out. https://www.techsmith.com/snagit...
@fosteronomo@nwkwan looks cool Daniel! Let me know how that works for you Nick. Interested to hear your thoughts. That being said, we'll be working on doing full desktop recording since that is by far our most requested feature at this point. Keep up the good work Daniel - you and your team have built a great product.
@dorian_kersch@leovbranco Hey there! Great question. The ability to delete/archive videos is high up on our list of features we'll be rolling out shortly. Expect it to be live real soon!
How's it going Product Hunt? I'm extremely excited to have you guys testing out what the Opentest team has been building for the past several months!
If you guys have any technical or product issues, I will be up (and highly caffeinated) to help you out! Either comment here or reach me directly via Twitter (@vhmth) or email (vinay@opentest.co).
If any fellow enginerds have technical questions - I'm here to answer them as well!
@vhmth@opentest Hi Vinay, I really love the simplicity of using Openvid and it's minimalist design. Is there a way to stop audio from recording though? There's a video on/off button but none for audio that I can seem to find.
@vhmth@opentest Ooh I like this video response style! :)
Specifically at my work, we share internal testing videos between the QA and dev teams.
Right now it involves using Jing to capture screen recordings and sharing it through Slack, etc.
Since most of these recordings are in the work environment with an open space layout, it's generally preferable to make the recordings with no audio.
This leads me to another request. It would be great if sharing the Openvid URLs in Slack would allow inline video playback. That's one of the biggest annoyances with Jing (even though it's just one click to open the share links in a browser window :) )
@nilayk@opentest I really love using our tool to add emotional context to support answers. :-) It's made this launch 100x easier!
Proper Facebook OG tags are high on our priority list. I personally want Slack inline videos to work as well since our team practically lives on Slack. You will have your way soon Nilay!
@vhmth@opentest Sounds like a good idea, I too shall try to add emotional contexts to support videos whenever possible. Best of luck with the next phases of development and congratulations on the product launch!
@_shahedk@vhmth It would be awesome if there could be a pen, highlighter, eraser so I could point out or draw attention to specific things that may be easy to miss.
@kosmischemusik@_shahedk that's an amazing suggestion! I've added that feature to the list of features we have. I like it a lot man. :-) @joethomas_x I believe you brought this idea up before. Sorry we did not listen to you.
@vhmth@_shahedk Glad I could bring some validation for @joethomas_x's idea :D. I've seen a lot of suggestions when products get hunted here and definitely think providing the community/users with some means of (indirectly) directing the product might be a good idea.
Awesome project! I've been looking for something like this for quite a long time. The use case I wanted it for is short demos of pull requests - eg. walk the other engineers through the feature that this PR covers.
One additional thing that would also be great is export to gif... because gifs!!!
@vhmth haha awesome response! re gifs - yeah totally makes sense. this tool makes recording so easy that i just want to (obviously) use it for everything i need haha.
@vesln dude awesome! I'm happy that it's useful for you. Honestly, this tool aligns closely with a belief that I have that people should give more value than they take. So saying that has completely made my day.
@svennpetter we 100% plan on doing this! Because of how our technology is built, this should actually be very doable within a couple weeks of work. Out of curiosity, how often do you see the need for this use case personally within your org?
@joethomas_x nice! Yea I've tried using hangouts/appear.in in the past while recording with Lookback, but have sometimes found that it glitches when both apps try to use the camera, mic and screens feeds. Will try it with Openvid for next tests!
@svennpetter@joethomas_x awesome! Please do let me know how it goes. I have not tested this use case myself, but have written it down to make sure I do it over the weekend.
@_shahedk@erictwillis@yoyo_thomas@vhmth This is just great! Any shortcut to embed the video on a website without having to donwload, upload to YouTube and then embed from there?
@jose3188_tw@erictwillis@yoyo_thomas@vhmth Greeeaat question! Embeddable video's is actually something I added to our roadmap just a few days ago. Expect it to be available very soon! :)
@vhmth@_shahedk@erictwillis@yoyo_thomas@webtech Hi Vinay! I am actually creating tutorials for www.know.ee, the online business cards tool I created (soon to be posted here). It is very visual and I need to show how to do things instead of explaining, so I will be embedding the videos directly in the website and also in the blog! It will come very handy to me!
@jose3188_tw@_shahedk@erictwillis@yoyo_thomas@webtech ah cool! Yeah I can definitely see that being the case. I have added that to the near-term roadmap. If you wouldn't mind, could you email me at vinay@opentest.co? That way I can make sure that that is ready for you in a decent amount of time lining up with your launch.
Pretty cool stuff, though for web testing I find I'm usually involved with people who use Internet Explorer (SHOCKER, RIGHT?!), so this won't help me much there unfortunately. :)
@gloom303 hey Bent! I absolutely feel you on this one! I've created a quick response video for you. Basically, I think the strides MSFT has been making with Edge and Chakra are actually awesome and would love to be able to support that for you!
https://www.opentest.co/share/8c...
@vhmth Full screen/desktop recording (easily accessible, that's the core here -- we're dealing with non-technical users after all) would be a suitable workaround. Not sure if that would be less or more hassle for non-tech users than a IE addon. Possibly less, since they tend to live in environments with strict security settings as well.
@gloom303 hmm that's always tricky. I think I agree with you that an IE addon would be great, but I'm almost wondering if, because the add-on ecosystem isn't quite as accepted yet on IE, people would think that it could be malicious. As we discuss this, I have bumped up full desktop recording from the extension again in our list. I think it's important.
@gloom303 haha I see now that I'm re-reading. Definitely my slip-up. Am running on nothing but pure caffeine at this point. :-) Not to self - desktop screen recording: something people want. Do it. :-)
Very cool! Any way I can save recordings to my dropbox instead of having to store them with you guys? One of Dropbox features I use most is having every screenshot I take saved to dropbox and a url to it copied directly to clipboard. Having that for videos/gifs would be incredible.
@eli_finkelshteyn I know we used to joke around at Backplane calling each other "horrible guys", but you know your videos are anonymous and safe with us. I'm a good guy. I'm on your side! :-)
Having worked at a cloud company also adds extremely relevant reference experience with regards to being unreasonably anal about customer data privacy.
If you are interested, here are the terms for the recorder and our platform:
https://www.opentest.co/legal/op...
There is an awesome section at the bottom there that starts at a title denoted "Client Information". I think you will enjoy what we have to say (although it is pretty standard for any company that stores user-generated data).
@vhmth awesome. Sounds rad. If I had that Dropbox feature I'd use this all the time (and probably will without it too). Good job making something this cool!
Best thing ever. I use it a lot when product testing, it's so much easier to explain when I find a bug to our developers, also works great for recording calls and doing demos or tutorials.
Pros:
Easy to use, FREE, unlimited videos, can take notes , and many other things.
Cons:
None! They are working on new updates and features that they share on their roadmap, it's awesome.
@rrrraulsc could you elaborate on what you mean by "stops me"? Do you mean the recording icon turns back to grey? Does the camera circle disappear? Just looking to get some more information. Also, just a heads up, if you update to chrome 49+, your videos will all be HD. :-)
That's what I was looking for. I am building a site and I don't want to install heavy screen recording software on my system just to create a 10-15 seconds screencast.
@vhmth That's awesome. Thanks for the tips! We're currently building that part for our webRTC product and we're wondering if we were going in the right direction. That's reassuring. Now the challenge is to handle the footage/compilation if multiple cameras/screensharings etc.
@gillesbertaux awesome! Let's schedule a call! I would love to be able to help out in any way possible. I guess unless you're building the same exact thing. In which case, good luck! :-P My email is vinay@opentest.co
@thiagoafram hey Thiago! Unfortunately delete is not currently implemented. In the very very close future (a couple days), we will have archive/unarchive, which will allow you to essentially take down a share link, but it will still be available to you within your dashboard (https://www.opentest.co/my-videos).
Let me know if that answers your question. If you would still like actual file deletion, I also want to know about that. :-)
@arunpattnaik@thiagoafram video deletion is now our most requested feature. It will likely be coming up. The storage is free and unlimited. :-) Record away!
@vhmth Deleting a video is a must, especially as we tend to make mistakes and would only want to keep the final version, not the 'wrong' ones. It'd be awful to send a previous version by mistake. Also, don't see the point of archiving if you have, say, 5 versions of the same video, but only one really usable. Does it make sense? :)
@thiagoafram 100% man. The users have spoken and it makes sense to us. :-) Archive mainly will be shipping first simply because it's an easier stop-gap solution, but you will have your cake and eat it too eventually! We will be updating our users with feature updates regularly, so keep your eyes peeled.
@ajonit hey Ankur! It does not currently support full desktop recording, but it is certainly on our feature list! Do you have any particular use cases that come to mind?
@vhmth yes, many times v need to show a quick illustration/support to our trainees for a desktop based software, while we have camtasia studio , it's an overkill for simple recordings.
Great product, great experience, i used the screencastify chrome extension. But i think this one is better and suits more all my different needs (like user testing and bug report)
@vhmth Screencastify is heavily based on Google Drive and that's why i use it. I think cloud storage service integration will be very useful for your users (either G. Drive or Dropbox like others said) because it will be easier for them to integrate openvid in their workflow.
@jimmyvergerolle great point. Do you and your team personally use G Drive? Wondering what your workflow is for storing/sharing files right now. If you don't mind, could you email me directly at vinay@opentest.co? This PH comment thread is starting to get unwieldy. :-)
