I'm surprised Kiva was never hunted before

A few years back, many Kiva lenders were surprised to learn that their loan money wasn't actually going to the recipients that Kiva implied it was going to. How clear is this for Kiva users/lenders these days?

How is Kiva funded? How do you make money?
