@nivo0o0 @rrhoover brought up a good point about the challenges of music. Inasmuch as there are a lot of great music apps/sites out there, there still lacks a standard of quality and uniform implementation of community-building tools. It's not that music should be uniform by any means; but communal dynamics should be so that they are more easily able to be understood. Ryan's point of unique music tastes--even among friends--is equally important. It goes to the notion that unique perspective and individuality are difficult to capitalize on, though highly important to acknowledge and foster. In music, the music is more than what you listen to: it's a part of your identity. The music apps/sites that truly find a way to break through socially will be those that foster discussion over these unique, sometimes diverging viewpoints, and build a community around that. Additionally, a dynamic like peer-to-peer has changed everything in music, not just the distribution model. It's similarly affected how people can communicate about their musical identities to others formerly unknown or unreachable to them. This is a particularly powerful trend. In arts and media, engagement becomes magnetic when the above examples are articulated to a potential community in an opportunistic, even subtle manner.
