Does anyone know how to enable this for G Suite accounts that were not/are not in the Early Adopter Program?
Julian Miller
@y_molodtsov I wish they'd prioritize the folks who pay for G suite.
Julian Miller
@thatmattgardner agree or disagree? =)
Matt Gardner
@julianmiller Oh totally agree. Apps teams need to play ball with the other teams and vice versa, if google wants to be a player in enterprise cloud apps they need to stop leaving us out to dry on half their damn products. Pretty sure apps users still don't get all of the google home/assistant functionality. It's one of my biggest gripes about google apps.
Julian Miller
@thatmattgardner great points. I hadn't even considered the relevance of the home/assistant ecosystem as applied to business cases!

Here’s the most interesting bit: “Finally, a new confidential mode allows you to remove the option to forward, copy, download or print messages—useful for when you have to send sensitive information via email like a tax return or your social security number. You can also make a message expire after a set period of time to help you stay in control of your information.”
Aaron Lee D'Souza
@frantzlight Question, wouldn't a screengrab defeat this purpose?
Chris Frantz
@aaroniclee Maybe? Here's a line from the WSJ write-up: "When you compose a message, you can turn on Confidential Mode. As the sender, you can set the message to be deleted after a period of time. You can un-send any Confidential Mode message. You can even require the recipient to enter a passcode before they can read it. Messages still live in your sent folder as long as you let them, though, so you should periodically purge the most important stuff." https://www.wsj.com/articles/the...

@aaroniclee @frantzlight *runs off to purge sent mail for the first time ever*

@aaroniclee @frantzlight I feel like they're just merging in plugins like mixmax into the native experience. Which s great, one less sub to pay for :)
Michael Klein
@frantzlight This doesn't bring any kind of security - especially not with AI reading your emails... There is no option for encryption, just for making a passcode which at maximum stops a hacker to view that information.

Disappointed is how I'd describe my overall reaction to this "new Gmail." Lots of features borrowed from Google Inbox and some other competitors (Protonmail), but nothing resembling the reinvention of the "experience" of using email that I crave. "New Gmail" does not make actually dealing with email any more pleasant for me.

The most innovative thing about this is probably the "secure message" feature I saw promoted in the press release, but even that doesn't seem enabled yet on my account. But it's not something I would use more than a couple of times a year.

I still use Gmail for work, but have moved on to greener pastures with my personal email. The cost/benefit of Google invading my privacy no longer pans out.

Pros:

Integrated calendar widget is cool. Some nice features brought over from Google Inbox (hover buttons, open attachments from list view).

Cons:

Does not look great on big monitors. Also, do I really want AI reading my email for "Smart" Replies? Why can't I turn that off?

Eddie Kovarski
Thanks for the honest review Eric, spot on for me as well; The "new" features aren't worth it for me to switch my personal email back to Google. As for the secure messages, as @aaroniclee pointed out, its easily defeated by taking a photo/screenshot.

Will google ever release a unified inbox? I have 4 email accounts, to check my email I'd have to switch accounts 4 times. Same for mobile, and yet nearly every 3rd party client allows for this. I'd love to use Google's UIs but it'd be too much work.
Eric Wilson
@grantgamesgames There are power user ways to do this. But at the rate Gmail adds new features, I wouldn't expect something user-friendly and native until 2025 at the earliest. (I'm a bit salty about "New Gmail" if you can tell. Very disappointed.) https://business.tutsplus.com/tu...

I don't know what to make of this new interface. There are few things to like - the integrated calendar, tasks, smart replies etc. but the overall design is extremely incoherent.

I'm not even sure how the compose button made it through all those reviews before production release. Some UI elements seem to have slightly rounded edges (search bar) while others have fully rounded corners (compose, active item in the left side menu).

This also doesn't appear to be a full redesign. There are remnants of the older UI throughout the product:

- The settings pages weren't updated. Why?

- The account dropdown on the top right still has elements of the old UI

- Hangouts hasn't changed much

I also don't like the fact that buttons that were super clear in the past are no longer easy to recognize - back, archive etc. They have all been replaced with icons that you need to get used to.

Pros:

Instant access to calendar, smart replies and the new tasks app (although it's very limiting)

Cons:

Incoherent design (different elements have either fully rounded or partially rounded edges), compose button, old settings interface

"I also don't like the fact that buttons that were super clear in the past are no longer easy to recognize - back, archive etc. They have all been replaced with icons that you need to get used to." < Agreed. Strong observations.

Looks like the checkbox to enable the new gmail it is live in G Suite! Go to your admin panel -> apps -> gmail and you'll find it right below the checkbox for "Inbox."

Long awaited: a new interface to our beloved email program. Material design all the way.

Pros:

Clean and smooth. Didn't break plug-ins either, including our Salesflare sidebar. Loving it so far! 😍

Cons:

Probably just need to get used a bit to the new look

Ahmad Awais ⚡

Loved the update of Gmail. Keep integration and the speed is so much better now. Can't wait to try it out for a while.

Pros:

Keep FTW, Expiring Emails, Fast, UI/UX so much better

Cons:

None so far

Great — maybe Gmail makers can respond here — finally we can talk to them?... I've had this question forever — why not allow to check 5 emails and forward all of them to someone?
Braunson Yager
It's certainly a new look but there's a few quirks that would make me rather use the old design. 1. The compose and pause/resume inbox buttons, make the width 100% 2. The right icons bar + hangouts are not hide-able any more, leaving you with that much less room 3. Related to #2, I have two columns of mail, left side is my normal inbox, right side column is emails with certain flags (yellow exclamation marl, purple question mark, etc) and in addition to #2 it's even less room to read subjects. 4. When viewing an email the subject is HUGE and there's a bunch of whitespace to the left of it (obvious to match the text of the sender below it but the icons at top are 100% left aligned... see what I mean at https://goo.gl/sbBMSw It's a good start but there's a few quirks and things I'd change to make it more usable on larger desktop screens when you have labs/plugins enabled.

A couple things to know here: The rollout of the new Gmail is STARTING today, so everybody won't get it as an option right away. I'm a Gmail extension maker, and most extension makers were given early access to the new Gmail a couple months ago so they could start adapting their extensions to the new Gmail UI. (I'm actually a bit behind on adapting my extensions, so I'm hoping for a slow rollout.). My personal prediction is that Google will soon abandon Inbox. Here's the evidence: 1) This rollout of the new Gmail, 2) The fact that most Gmail extension makers never adapted their extensions to Inbox, forcing users who rely on them to stay with classic Gmail, and most importantly 3) The introduction of Gmail Add-ons several months ago, which are plugins for Gmail that work on both desktop and mobile. Here's the rub though...the new Gmail Add-on platform ONLY work on Gmail, not Inbox.
Mike
I think I - kinda - like it. But i've seen better design concepts over the past few years. The 'compose' button is one of most ugly buttons I've ever seen...
Emanuele Ricci
I'm really mad that they dropped Inbox. It was huge the gap from it and GMail and now (as many google products) it feels abandoned. I still can't switch back to Gmail and I've no alternatives on Android/Windows.
Thanaen

I don't see a real interest in Gmail while Inbox exists, and has a really nice design!

Pros:

Looks good

Cons:

What's the point of "Inbox"?

Karan Talati
I'm really interested in this. Is this going to follow Google fashion of trying things in different branches (i.e. products) and then merging winning features back into the app's mainline? Will Inbox eventually be retired in favor of core Gmail? From the looks of it, Google hasn't really done much on Inbox in some time. The new Gmail has some nice sidebar integrations with Calendar, Keep, and Tasks. I'd love for these to be there in Inbox. Will they be? It's always hard to tell which one of the many apps that do something (chat, email) Google wants me to use.
Semira Amiralai
Personally, I agree: it's long overdue. I give it a big thumbs up and really appreciate the integrated calendar + updated Tasks features. Am still wrapping my head around Inbox, which is great but, Gmail? Still a winner! I think with this release, they may have pushed MS and Apple's mail products (and any 3rd party extensions, products, etc.) far down the competition ladder. With the Gmail update, I've remove so many 3rd-party extensions that I once relied on heavily; consider this a great advantage to Chrome. Now, if only the mobile for iOS would receive the same upgrade as has the desktop (for Gmail)... though I realize the answer there is= Go Android :)
@Bernardamus
I would love to test it.. but it looks like we don't have this option yet in Europe (even if my Gmails are all set up in English... )
Michael Klein

I use Gmail for over 15 years now - never thought the day comes I consider moving away from it but today is the day. Can't do anything about the data they already have but will definatly think about new Data they get.

AI without option to turn off, no encryption, no possibility to have private thoughts... Sorry google but what´s about the "do no evil" part you don't get? - You fail at that big time!

Pros:

Gmail with better design - was long overdue and is now again an option against inbox

Cons:

No Added Security, AI now searching my emails and doing idk what with my Data, Scary as fuck!

Nick Woodhams
I'm so glad they added the Snooze email functionality. It's my most used feature in Boomerang, no longer have to pay $5/mo for it.
Seth Williams
Looks great! I'd love to try it out but it's not showing up in settings like the blog says.
drea
@sethbwilliams Same. I'm dying to try it out, I think this new update will readily kill Boomerang! Now if they can put in calendar scheduling, then Mixmax is also going to be in trouble...
Seth Williams
@helloitsdrea Awesome! Glad you got it! Where do you see the notification in settings? Is it at the top? Easy to find?
drea
@sethbwilliams @adu_wu Give it a bit of time if you still don't see it - I've been chatting with friends about it and some still don't see the setting yet, so looks like rollout is still in phases!
Loralee Hutton
I'm using Gsuite Standard (the grandfathered free plan) and it looks like they may not be rolling it out to us for a while (if ever). Thought I'd mention it unless someone else who doesn't see it, is also on this plan.
Sandipan Banerjee

I love the AI assistant in Compose section.

Pros:

Excellent UX/UI

Cons:

It needs better internet connection
