What's your experience with using external utility API services or integrating utility libraries?

Most developers I've spoken to say that while libraries are easy to incorporate into existing code base, and give better control over the data being processed and stored; they bloat the application, use additional memory and compute resources, and are usually tied to a specific technology stack.
