Strictly speaking, a marketplace is one where multiple buyers and sellers meet to buy and sell products and services. E commerce is electronic commerce means selling on a digit / electronic platform and not from a brick and mortar establishment. Traditionally ecommerce meant one entity say Amazon selling to multiple customers. Over time most ecom platforms evolved to become marketplaces allowing a host of others to sell using the platform

An eCommerce platform refers to a website or application that enables the buying and selling of products or services online. An eCommerce platform typically includes features such as a shopping cart, payment processing, inventory management, and customer management.
A digital marketplace, on the other hand, refers to a platform that allows multiple third-party sellers to offer their products or services for sale to a common customer base. Examples of digital marketplaces include Amazon, Etsy, and eBay. In a digital marketplace, the platform owner provides the technology infrastructure, payment processing, and customer support, while the third-party sellers focus on sourcing and selling their products.
In summary, an eCommerce platform is focused on a single merchant or business, while a digital marketplace connects multiple merchants or businesses to a common customer base.

In a nutshell, the key difference between a digital marketplace and eCommerce lies in their approach to transactions. While eCommerce typically refers to a single seller operating an online store, a digital marketplace brings together multiple sellers and buyers on a platform to facilitate a wide range of transactions.

Digital marketplaces host multiple sellers, while eCommerce is any online sale.

Traditionally, e-commerce was typically a singular entity like Amazon selling to numerous consumers, but over time, the majority of these platforms have evolved into marketplaces, facilitating a variety of sellers to use the platform for their sales.
