Maker's Corner: What started as a personal hack is now used by thousands
NEW First Maker's Corner Feature - Dmytro Chuta, Founder of Subscription Day
Hi everyone! Please welcome our first Maker's Corner feature, @dmitriychuta, Founder of @Subscription Day
Feel free to chime in below in the comments with questions on his product or journey or anything else that comes to mind!
What is Subscription Day?
Subscription Day was born from a personal mission to declutter our own subscriptions and finances. While developing the product, we discovered most people significantly underestimate how much money they lose to forgotten subscriptions.
Our mission became clear: help everyone effortlessly track spending and make mindful financial decisions.
What inspired you to build your product? What problem were you trying to solve when you built it? Has that evolved?
Subscription Day began quite spontaneously. Initially, I created it just to solve a personal issue—I kept forgetting about my own subscriptions until charges appeared unexpectedly. I shared it with friends, who encouraged me to post it on Reddit. The huge positive response convinced me this problem affects many others too. Most services don't remind users before charging, leading to frustration, especially with annual subscriptions. Subscription Day fills this gap by notifying users beforehand.
What’s a feature or detail you obsessed over that most users will never notice—but you're really proud of?
There’s a playful easter egg in Subscription Day—on the PRO purchase screen, if you move the window around, animated bubbles follow energetically. It's a fun detail most users might never discover, yet it makes the app uniquely enjoyable. I haven't seen something similar in other desktop apps.
What’s something that didn’t make it into your product for this launch, but you'd like to build?
There are many features I didn’t include initially but plan to release soon, such as:
A light mode design
Integration with Calendar and Apple Reminders
Cost optimization recommendations
Subscription search and sorting for heavy users
List view for subscriptions
AI-driven subscription import from various data sources
Is this your first product? If not, what else have you built, or are currently working on?
This is my second product. A month ago, I released DeskMinder, an app for quick desktop reminders, which became Product of the Day on Product Hunt. The success and positive feedback greatly boosted my motivation to launch Subscription Day.
What’s your secret weapon or go-to when you get stuck while building?
My secret recipe is simple yet effective: a quality flat white coffee, ChatGPT, and watching cute videos of swimming capybaras. It helps me recharge and break through any creative or technical blocks.
When did you decide to launch on Product Hunt, and how did you prep for it? Do you have any advice for someone thinking about launching?
I've been following Product Hunt launches for a long time, using it myself to discover exciting projects. Thus, I take launch preparation seriously—carefully crafting the product presentation, planning social media posts in advance, and thoughtfully writing the launch materials. My main advice is to leverage the numerous excellent guides available for launching on Product Hunt—I'm surprised more makers don’t utilize them.
What's the most surprising or unexpected learning and/or feedback you've received?
Every Product Hunt launch provides valuable feedback and fresh ideas. Specifically, my last launch brought ten new feature ideas from user suggestions—ideas I'd never previously considered. The depth and quality of community feedback are incredibly inspiring.
