Launch with Promo or Full version?

👋 Hi Makers! I have a discussion with my team about what is the best approach to launch on Product Hunt. We're thinking is it a good way to launch free version with reduced functionality or is it better to spend some more time and launch with the full version? Full version doesn't mean for sure that we stop investing and growing functionality further, but it covers much more than the promo one. Here are the main concerns: Promo can be a first step to let people know about us and reach out to the audience, get the valuable feedback etc., but worry that this promo version is not enough for the end users and it may on the contrary play against us. Can you please advise or share your experience? Thanks a lot! ❤️

Well, would recommend you to offer something to hunters. It is a better strategy to convert hunters to your users. No need for promo too - you can just redirect them to a specific page on your website; curated for hunters.

One of the great things about Product Hunt is you can always do more than one launch, and there are numerous companies who have launched a promo / beta version of their app and then come back to launch the full version. The benefits you get from just getting that first launch out there not only include collecting significant feedback from users, but also understanding what works and doesn't work for a PH launch and building a community on the platform. When we finally got around to launching Vouch on PH, it was already post beta, however if I was to do it again, I would definitely have done a launch much earlier on.

@stevenbirchall appreciate your input! that's really helpful! This is going to be a first launch for my team and and yeah it can be a good learning path for sure if we launch with promo. Thanks for the advice and your experience! Do you plan to launch here new Vouch releases as well?

With promo for sure. The most important is users' feedback. Even if you know most of the ideas/functionalities which are missing users could provide you with new ones and which more important help you prioritize the functionality of the next version.

You can relaunch on Product hunt after 6 months. If developing the full version will take more than 6 months, launch the free version now to start building an audience and relaunch the full version in 6 month

@fabian_maume thanks a lot for your advice! Our V1 is under development now and we expect it to be ready in 1-2 mo approx. You're saying relaunch in 6 month - is it some rule that launch can be once in 6mo or it's just best approach?

@fabian_maume I found this in PH launch guide: "if your product has some game changing updates, you can still launch the next iteration and you don’t have to wait 6 months to do so.
