I've once hired a freelancer for a short term task without a contract. It went well, but some issues came up later, I had to pay more for the (additional) work to get it fixed quickly.

Once, we urgently hired a talented freelancer for a graphic design project without a contract. It started well, but issues cropped up. Our differing expectations and missed deadlines led to problems. We finished the project, but it was stressful.......
