Great question! I don’t think that points matter much, I guess they use points as one of many parameters to rank posts but on the second / third ranking iteration. Views come first.

They certainly matter when up-voting.

I think that points increase the value of your upvotes. Not all upvotes are equal for the ranking on the home page, and it seems that having a few upvotes from people with 50+ points is important for a launch to get traction. The exact Product hunt ranking algorithm is secret so their no way to say for sure.
