I’ve studied what worked for several successful founders, and here’s the result.
First of all, it’s important to follow Paul Graham’s mantra: “Do things that don’t scale”. All successful founders agree it’s the way how to attract the first 100 - 1000 users.
Here’s a list of 12 tactics you can do for acquiring your first users.
1) Reach out to friends and colleagues
2) Reach out to targeted strangers (send cold messages/emails)
3) Enlist influencers
4) Create viral content (video, blogpost, etc.)
5) Build your product "in public” - share milestones, struggles, achievements, etc. It will drive the initial traffic to your product
6) Be active in related communities to create vibe around your product
7) Create a side product (ebook, guide, templates, quiz, fun website, etc.) to promote your main product
8) Sponsor newsletters with your targeted audience (or do a cross-promotion)
9) Utilise the power of Quora. By answering questions on Quora you can drive leads through to your site and increase brand recognition on subjects that matter to your audience
10) Create a lifetime deal campaign on platforms like Appsumo, RocketHub, PitchGround, SaasMantra, LifeTimo, StackCommerce
11) Launch your product on startup directories like Product Hunt and BetaList
12) Leverage SEO through Youtube videos
