Belly Buddy - Identify food you eat that are linked to digestive issues

byβ€’

Debug your diet! Belly Buddy is a quantified-self app that can help you plan an elimination diet. Log the food you eat and your digestive symptoms (like gas, bloating, or heartburn). The app's algorithm then tells you which foods correlate with your symptoms.

Hey Product Hunt community! We're thrilled to share our latest creation with you – Belly Buddy, a new mobile app designed to transform your relationship with food and empower you to take control of your digestive health. The Idea Behind Belly Buddy At Belly Buddy, we believe that understanding the connection between what you eat and how you feel is key to a healthier, happier you. We wanted to create an app that provides a personalized experience that helps users identify the foods that might be linked to unpleasant digestive symptoms, such as bloating, gas, headaches, and skin rashes. It's also perfect for parents who need to understand what foods might be linked to digestive issues experienced by their kids. Our journey began with a simple question: Can we make an inexpensive, easy-to-use app that will help people gain insights into their diet and well-being? Our many hours of research, development, and user testing helped us to create, refine and enhance Belly Buddy, ensuring it meets the needs of people with various dietary preferences and health goals. It's also perfect for parents who need to understand what foods might be linked to digestive issues experienced by their kids. Building Belly Buddy Belly Buddy has been a fun project to build. Mike, our developer, is a seasoned programmer who has worked at a number of startups and a couple of larger companies (most notably LinkedIn). He had never worked in the health and wellness space before, and he had never written a mobile app before. He was eager to try using React Native Expo, since it was reputed to be a good way to quickly get an app up and running on both iOS and Android. This turned out to be a good idea, since it enabled him to iteratively develop the app and respond to user feedback quickly. Please Join Us, and Help Spread the Word We hope you will become a part of the Belly Buddy community. We encourage you to try out Belly Buddy, explore its features, and let us know how it affects your diet. Your feedback is invaluable as we continue to evolve and improve the app. If you have friends or family who deal with bothersome digestive symptoms, please tell them about Belly Buddy. We hope you will help us spread the word and empower more people to improve their digestive health.

I haven't heard the term, "quantified self" in a while! I love many FODMAP foods like broccoli and cauliflower but they can lead to bloating. πŸ«ƒπŸΌ

@rrhoover Yes, we're excited to be doing quantitative analysis for these types of digestive issues that can be so uncomfortable and annoying. And yeah, it's a bummer when your favorite foods don't make your body feel good.

Hello guys. Congratulations on the launch. This is a very cool app, I want to know if you plan to add different languages?
navod homsara
Outstanding effort, Mike! This app is a game-changer, particularly beneficial for tech enthusiasts. Are there features like a sugar intake tracker catering to individuals with diabetes as well?
Nithin Raju
@navod_homsara Yes, This app really sounds interesting, Have you tried it in real time?
Mike Wertheim
@navod_homsara Belly Buddy knows which foods are sugary and which aren't. But it's not precise enough to be tracking the actual amount of sugar that a person is consuming. (I'm guessing there may be other apps that do that, though.)

In this fast-paced world of fast food, applications like these play a crucial role in preventing stomach problems. Great initiative. πŸ₯¦

Wow, this is so cool! Are you also matching the best food for people with chronic diseases? Like ulcerative colitis
Mike Wertheim
@tomorbach No, we try to steer clear of naming diseases, since we don't want to appear as if we're "diagnosing", due to the risk of causing legal or compliance issues.

Hello Mike and the Belly Buddy team, Congratulations on launching Belly Buddy on Product Hunt! It's impressive to see an app that tackles the often-overlooked connection between diet and digestion. The personalized approach sounds incredibly user-friendly, especially for those new to managing their dietary health. I'm curious, was there a personal experience that inspired the creation of Belly Buddy, or was it the observed need in the wider community that sparked the idea? Looking forward to trying it out and sharing with those I know could benefit from such insights! Good luck with the journey ahead.
Mike Wertheim
@alex_dulub Yes - This app was created out of personal need. Someone in my family needed a tool like this, so I wrote it for them to use.

Great work Mike! This a gamer changer app that is very useful for tech people. Do you also have a sugar intake tracker for diabetic people?
Mike Wertheim
@saeid564 Sort of... Belly Buddy knows which foods are sugary and which aren't. But it's not precise enough to be tracking the actual amount of sugar that a person is consuming. (I'm guessing there may be other apps that do that, though.)

Hey @mike_wertheim such a great and intuitive product! In a world where so many of us have our health declining and are bombarded with fitness routines and new diets Belly Buddy feels like a breath of fresh air! Can't wait to try this out, I think it'd be really cool if we could also upload a picture of what we are eating, I don't trust myself to manually track everything I eat
Mike Wertheim
@aayush_kniru Yes, good point! Remembering to enter all your food is challenging. There are some AI apps now that claim to identify all of the foods in a photo of a plate of food, but we'll need to see how well they work. I am a little skeptical that we'd be able to get the detail we need from a photo. For example, I'd love to see if AI could distinguish wheat bread from gluten-free bread in a photo, or if it could distinguish regular milk from lactose-free milk.

Idea: A feature like the app Yuka where you can scan a barcode and then see the reporting about how likely that food or ingredient in the food would mess you up based on the data learned in the app...obviously the more use the better.
Mike Wertheim
@joseph_ahlo Yes, this is a great idea and is on our future roadmap for exploration.

This app really deserves the top vote. With an app like this we would actually know what we about to take is healthy enough for us. I love my health and any assistance that would help me eat right is very much welcome. Very nice ✌

It was time for a specific digestive app like this, health and emotions a direct linked with what we eat. Im curious about how you related and specific issue, not it may be also a lot of external facts to take into account. By the way, congrats and thanks for diving in such an important issue.
Matteo Zumpano
Looks like a great product! I am looking forward to testing this out in the future!

This seems like a really good app! It has a simple way to use and an intuitive design. Also, I've never seen symptoms correlated with food before, which is so interesting. I believe it could help many people with their diets.
Larry Hartman
This is exactly what I need to help me monitor my digestive issues.

Congrats on the launch team! I really love the concept of Belly Buddy and excited it’s finally time for you guys to launch. It goes on step further than all the other food intake apps and actually look at symptoms associated! πŸ‘
