Debug your diet! Belly Buddy is a quantified-self app that can help you plan an elimination diet. Log the food you eat and your digestive symptoms (like gas, bloating, or heartburn). The app's algorithm then tells you which foods correlate with your symptoms.

Hey Product Hunt community! We're thrilled to share our latest creation with you – Belly Buddy, a new mobile app designed to transform your relationship with food and empower you to take control of your digestive health. The Idea Behind Belly Buddy At Belly Buddy, we believe that understanding the connection between what you eat and how you feel is key to a healthier, happier you. We wanted to create an app that provides a personalized experience that helps users identify the foods that might be linked to unpleasant digestive symptoms, such as bloating, gas, headaches, and skin rashes. It's also perfect for parents who need to understand what foods might be linked to digestive issues experienced by their kids. Our journey began with a simple question: Can we make an inexpensive, easy-to-use app that will help people gain insights into their diet and well-being? Our many hours of research, development, and user testing helped us to create, refine and enhance Belly Buddy, ensuring it meets the needs of people with various dietary preferences and health goals. It's also perfect for parents who need to understand what foods might be linked to digestive issues experienced by their kids. Building Belly Buddy Belly Buddy has been a fun project to build. Mike, our developer, is a seasoned programmer who has worked at a number of startups and a couple of larger companies (most notably LinkedIn). He had never worked in the health and wellness space before, and he had never written a mobile app before. He was eager to try using React Native Expo, since it was reputed to be a good way to quickly get an app up and running on both iOS and Android. This turned out to be a good idea, since it enabled him to iteratively develop the app and respond to user feedback quickly. Please Join Us, and Help Spread the Word We hope you will become a part of the Belly Buddy community. We encourage you to try out Belly Buddy, explore its features, and let us know how it affects your diet. Your feedback is invaluable as we continue to evolve and improve the app. If you have friends or family who deal with bothersome digestive symptoms, please tell them about Belly Buddy. We hope you will help us spread the word and empower more people to improve their digestive health.

I haven't heard the term, "quantified self" in a while! I love many FODMAP foods like broccoli and cauliflower but they can lead to bloating. 🫃🏼
Mike Wertheim
@rrhoover Yes, we're excited to be doing quantitative analysis for these types of digestive issues that can be so uncomfortable and annoying. And yeah, it's a bummer when your favorite foods don't make your body feel good.

Congrats on the launch team! I really love the concept of Belly Buddy and excited it’s finally time for you guys to launch. It goes on step further than all the other food intake apps and actually look at symptoms associated! 👏

Hello Mike and the Belly Buddy team, Congratulations on launching Belly Buddy on Product Hunt! It's impressive to see an app that tackles the often-overlooked connection between diet and digestion. The personalized approach sounds incredibly user-friendly, especially for those new to managing their dietary health. I'm curious, was there a personal experience that inspired the creation of Belly Buddy, or was it the observed need in the wider community that sparked the idea? Looking forward to trying it out and sharing with those I know could benefit from such insights! Good luck with the journey ahead.

@alex_dulub Yes - This app was created out of personal need. Someone in my family needed a tool like this, so I wrote it for them to use.

Wow, this is so cool! Are you also matching the best food for people with chronic diseases? Like ulcerative colitis
Mike Wertheim
@tomorbach No, we try to steer clear of naming diseases, since we don't want to appear as if we're "diagnosing", due to the risk of causing legal or compliance issues.

Wow mike. It’s amazing and super useful as well. You don’t notice until it happens. Glad to see you helping on that

This is a WONDERFUL idea. Don't you think I'd wanna try the app before I directly buy it? I note down the foods that hamper my gut and I always lose my notes, so this comes truly at a better time.

Congrats! Keeping track of diet is very important for fitness enthusiasts. It's recommended to use AI to identify the type of food by taking photos, which will greatly simplify the user's experience.

Hey @mike_wertheim such a great and intuitive product! In a world where so many of us have our health declining and are bombarded with fitness routines and new diets Belly Buddy feels like a breath of fresh air! Can't wait to try this out, I think it'd be really cool if we could also upload a picture of what we are eating, I don't trust myself to manually track everything I eat
Mike Wertheim
@aayush_kniru Yes, good point! Remembering to enter all your food is challenging. There are some AI apps now that claim to identify all of the foods in a photo of a plate of food, but we'll need to see how well they work. I am a little skeptical that we'd be able to get the detail we need from a photo. For example, I'd love to see if AI could distinguish wheat bread from gluten-free bread in a photo, or if it could distinguish regular milk from lactose-free milk.

Oh wow, this could be very interesting really. How's the experience so far for current users?
Martin Schumacher
Wow. This sounds like something useful for me. Because I'm struggling with diabetes, this could be really helpful .

Hey @belly_buddy - Great job on your launch! It is clear there is natural demand for something like this despite being just an initial release. I am pretty excited to check this out but more so about where this product could go. Recently I was looking for a note taking app that I could just speak to and it would transcribe and journal. With a use case of health in mind. Logging what I eat and how I feel in a free form natural way. Once all the data is logged using GenAI transcription, if you also have access to my HealthKit Data, including sleep and exercise, the types of correlation based insights you could give here would be amazing. I found nothing that did all of this and am happy to see what you are doing. It feels like a great foundation to get there (if it fits your vision). Good luck!

Congrats on your launch! Could I ask: Which sources do you use for your data?

This seems like a really good app! It has a simple way to use and an intuitive design. Also, I've never seen symptoms correlated with food before, which is so interesting. I believe it could help many people with their diets.
