Hello Product Hunt! We’re excited to bring BeddyBytes to a wider audience of privacy-oriented parents. We’re happy to have your support and hear your feedback! Why did we build BeddyBytes? When my wife and I were looking to buy a baby camera to keep an eye on our daughter, I kept vetoing the products my wife suggested. The primary reason was privacy. Data leaks are becoming more and more common and we aren’t keen on that leaked data being video of our child, us or our home. Products offering AI monitoring need to record data so that it can be labelled (by a team of humans) and used to train the models. I find that inherently creepy, and you don’t have to search long to find reports of these teams sharing sensitive and highly invasive images. The second reason was that I didn’t want more stuff. Especially when I had an old phone with all the required hardware (camera, microphone). Why couldn’t I use that? We aren’t upgrading-phones-every-year kind of people, but know that e-waste is a growing problem. I wanted to give that old device a second lease on life. So, I built a web app which streamed video directly from that old phone onto any of our other devices with a web browser. Now, we’re hoping to provide other privacy oriented parents the same option. How does it work? - Log in to BeddyBytes on at least 2 devices - Baby station requires a microphone, modern web browser and optionally a camera - Parent station requires a modern web browser - Baby station starts a session - Parent station connects to the session - You enjoy a few fleeting moments of peace Current features - Audio and video - Audio only - Unlimited parent stations (only limited by the number of devices you have) Next features - Recording - There aren’t many things cuter than a baby talking and singing to themselves in their cot. - Talk back channel - For when you need to give your child a soothing word before they get to sleep, or reassure them you’re on your way after they wake. - Monitor multiple baby stations at once - Possible currently, but you need to open multiple browser windows. - Reducing required password length - Apparently not everyone appreciates a strong (20+ characters) password as much as I do. I’ll reduce the minimum length and later replace the password login. - Alarm when connection is lost - We aren’t always watching the screen, so an alarm will sound if the parent station loses connection with the baby station Limitations - Night vision - Most smartphone cameras don’t provide night vision. I have an idea for further down the track, but for now nights are best served by audio only. We’re now available in early access, A$30 for life. As the product improves the price will increase so lock it in now!
