Augment Code releases CLI Claude Code competitor Auggie

I don't hear about Augment as much as I do Cursor, Windsurf, Claude Code etc. but they've also raised more than $200M, so it must be decent.

They just announced the release of a CLI tool, Auggie, to compete with Claude Code.

Here's the launch announcement.

Does anyone use Augment day to day? Is this a viable alternative to @Claude Code ? I tried it out the other day and couldn't get used to not being able to see the diffs like you can with other tools.

I use Augment code for long time, it's one of the best. The context engine is top-notch

I use Augment day to day, after quitting Cursor and Windsurf(from around April/May this year).

and I do enjoy vibe coding with Augment code. The context-engineering is top-tier and not sure if it used OCR too for enhancing the exp but I guess possibly yeah.

The downside is that recently(specifically from last few days, it was not that stable and constantly crashing), and I have to revert to the version of one week earlier which seems to be stable on my end so far.

@rickyguo nice, are you using it with VS code or with one of the JetBrains IDEs?

@steveb I used with VS code.

I tried Augment and thought it was cool but will need to give this a play this week. I find it hard to switch between editors so there's some switching cost for me to even play with all of these new tools.

I've taken a closer look at Auggie, and I think it's a solid effort, but it still lags behind Claude Code in terms of diff view functionality. The underlying library for diff rendering is more mature in Claude Code, which makes a big difference in usability. Still, Auggie's CLI-focused design might appeal to some developers.

@adi_singh5 The diff view is everything. I'm sure they'll fix this but I guess the entire thing will depend on if Augment can win on the underlying context and accuracy models. Given that their competing against the actual model provider, I'd be surprised if they can do better than Claude Code.

I like that they're keeping it CLI-native but yeah, visual feedback matters when you're deep in a repo.

I see potential, but Auggie stills feels like a 1.0. Will keep an eye on it though CLI is the right direction.

I felt something similar! I wanted to like Auggie, love the idea of a pure CLI AI dev companion but I kept feeling like I was coding in the dark without proper context or change previews. Claude Code spoils me with its structure and clarity.

Weird how quiet their launch was compared to Cursor or even Magic.dev. $200M and a CLI tool isn’t enough to create buzz anymore, I guess. That said, the engines feel powerful.
