What do you think about Meta's move towards not fact-checking information?

I see this as quite a problem in principle.
Given the situation in society, where it is easier to create and spread AI content, many conspiracy theories can be spread that tear society apart.
Not to mention that advertisers' ads may find themselves in an environment that will harm the good name of their company.
What's your take on it?

I've spent 6 years working at Meta. Deepfake is a big thing it committed to tackle. But it's particularly hard now with genAI. There are quite some fact-checking startups, I think Meta and Google and other conglomarates should considering working with them/ acquiring them.

@kissonlin This will be a huge thing. Already some of our people (even constitutional officials and members of the government) started proclaiming in our country such things as "The Earth is flat". I am like, "okay" :D but... this can have a broader implications on the health sector and science development. This will be a very difficult era.
Social media ended in 2024. Now its "virtual media" Mostly bots talking to bots 😸

the problem is not that they back track on it. the problem is we don't see it anymore. what i mean is i read cnn, fox, hln, de standaard, and even there sometimes there are 2 different stories, so you can't know which is true or not. So if big companies need to spend a lot of money on fact checking without any return. Than it is a big problem. I have the feeling people don't care anymore. and in the big lines it will all be the same news, but from a different view. Even when you can proof if it is a lie, how will you ever debunk it if the other party is blind. I don't say it is a good thing, i just say i understand, You say ads, you know everyday i get ads on all kind of platforms about celebrities that are dead or share their crypto secret, these day with video of them speaking. If they already can't check these how would they be able to check all the content created. it is my 2 cents

@sietse_schelpe I know what you mean, I take it, and we all have a choice and not to be censored but if social media is used for extremism and even the organization of radical groups that can start causing harm, it is dangerous.

@busmark_w_nika i agree, but in their eyes we or others are the extremism. Maybe the problem is we stopped listening to each other
Meta is a problem. 'nough said!
