Review Anytype?

Anytype is praised for its privacy-focused, local-first architecture, offering a robust alternative to Notion. Users appreciate its sleek design, cross-platform availability, and the ability to manage data offline. The app's flexibility in creating dashboards and knowledge graphs is highlighted, though some note a learning curve for new users. The community-driven development and open-source nature are well-received, with users excited about future updates. Overall, Anytype is seen as a promising tool for personal knowledge management, balancing modern features with strong data sovereignty.

I'm one of the few people who extensively tested anytype's first alpha version on a mac over the past 8 weeks. I used it to organise my tasks, private files and research activities. Overall I loved the experience and will continue to (heavily) use it. Pros - UI / UX is intuitive, exceptionally well designed, a piece of art - performance and speed are outstanding, super slick and snappy (vs. evernote, notion, airtable, trello) - self hosting without set up through IPFS, all complexity is abstracted away - privacy by design - I feel deeply relieved when nobody is watching or stealing my data - offline first - used it on a train and plane without any down times or restrictions - potential - content addressable web links will provide devs with completely new tool sets empowering edge AI, verifiable version control / auditability Cons - pass phrase for key recovery might be cumbersome for non technical users - still in alpha - I want to share it with my friends, family and colleagues asap - small bugs re text formatting given the early stage I believe anytype will set new standards by combining UX, convenience and privacy in unprecedented ways. Love it.

Local first. Totally offline. If you want to sync, End-to-End encryption. A new Operating System for your work. Not just another note-taking system. Passion and idealism-driven development team with deep expertise and real innovation power. An excellent secure work environment that needs to be supported in an online world that is very vulnerable to hacks, cyber-attacks and privacy infringements. As an alpha user/tester I am impressed with the work done and their plans going forward.

Best "everything app" ever! 🤩🎆✨ as an alpha tester since mid 2021, I can safely say that all the process, love and hard work behind this application is immense and super valuable. Not only is it technically amazing, but its philosophy makes it profoundly better than proprietary alternatives. Thanks for everything to the Anytype team and its great community 💖

It is a very promising product. I have tried many knowledge management apps and Anytype has a unique way to support end-to-end encrypted, local first with online sync, highly customize knowledge management. If they can get multiplayer running without any significant problems, Anytype will get 5 stars from me.

the legos of all personal knowledge management systems 🧠 it unifies the utility of notion w/ the heroic principles of obsidian to provide an ultra granular/customizable interface that allows you organize/systemize just about any type of data you can throw at it 🗂 while notion excels at creating/managing databases + obsidian shines at seamlessly composing + linking documentations, anytype is the perfect union of the two w/ its space~wide parameter system 🧱 every unit of information is an object, every object has a type, and relations define + link objects 🏗 the power of modularity this basic system provides is what truly makes anytype the legos of all pkm's/second~brain apps 👑 at the core of its superpowers are its superhero principles ~ local first, peer2peer, encrypted, open~sourced, and free [limitless functionality] 💎 anytype has become the focal point of my entire [productivity] system + it is impossible to overstate how much i admire/adore the product the fine folks behind anytype have created 🙏🏽 thank you, anytype team ✨

While I would love to complain a little bit about the issues with UX since they changed it up, that's not really a big issue. The big issue is how they advertised and still advertise themselves as open source. - It's not open source by definition. While they have their source code published, their license basically prohibits you to do anything with it, even just modifying it to use internally at your company is prohibited. The constant advertising it as "open source" - PLUS, if you get permission to use this software - the license agreement says that *your license will be revoked if you or any associated parties make a claim that anytype violate your OR OTHERS - ANY!! - patents* - So you are not allowed to complain if anytype infringes on your intellectual property. Such hypocrisy! Their current license would not be OSI approved. EDIT TO THE REPLY: You have yet to mention anything regarding the patent clause in the anytype license, which is not something anyone can justify. It's great that you're allowing internal use of your app, but you should make your license reflect that fact, versus relying on your precedent of you saying that you will not enforce the license. The license is still the license. The license allows you to. Your precedent does not hold up.

First of all, I’d like to say that we opened all our repositories: the clients, the logic layer, the sync nodes, the file nodes, the coordinator nodes. I hope this deserves enough of a recognition - all code is open. We believe this is the main objective of open sourcing the code - that all code is open for anyone to verify that the promises we make are exactly what is in the code: private, end-to-end encrypted, with keys controlled by users, p2p sync, offline first, etc. We think this is the most important part - open source means trust for us. Secondly, a big part of all these repositories are open with MIT licence - protocols and their implementations - any-block, any-sync, any-sync-node, any-sync-filenode, any-sync-coordinator. It means anyone can build on top, can reuse, modify and have full freedom to do what they want. Finally, we published client apps under Any Source Available License - it's a source-available one. The main logic is that we need to make sure anytype is self-sustainable and would like to protect ourselves from big companies that can use our code and use it inside their offers. Here, the licence allows for all non-commercial use. It limits commercial use - meaning if you want to start making business out of this code. Using it inside your company (and not charging any money for that) is not limited - you can do it. It follows our principles that anyone should be able to use anytype for free, if they use their resources. I think it only makes sense that if someone wants to make a business, then they participate in costs of building anytype. The same way we want to protect all those contributors who will build on top - that all of us will be able to sustainably invest into development of anytype. To summarise, you can modify anytype for internal use safely, but if you want to market it and sell it to others, we’d like to with all partners like that support the innovation of anytype. You can read more here: https://blog.anytype.io/our-open... I hope you can understand our logic and the reasons behind our choices. The strive to combine - trust, universal accessibility and sustainability.

I've been following AnyType for the past two years. I became the alpha tester in July 2021. I also became a nightly beta tester. I must appreciate the effort put forth by the team with every release. Its UI and features grew exponentially from a crippled note-taking app to an excellent p2p note-taking app with finetune UI and blazingly fast local sync. Thanks to its local sync capabilities, I am able to store all my personal and professional notes and tasks in AnyType.. I can't wait to contribute to their codebase.
