Indie hackers don't really like GPT-5. So I found made a list of alternatives!
We tested GPT-5 on real-world app building this week. The coding output is 10x better, and the “vibe coding” stuff is impressive as well. But once you try to iterate or fix/edit a few things, it starts to get messy: layout breaks, logic gets overwritten, and small edits often require you to re-explain everything.
If you’ve tried tools like Lovable, Cursor, Shipper, Replit, or V0, you’ll notice the difference... those are built "to build". GPT-5 still feels more like a really good assistant than a reliable builder.
TLDR:
it’s a big upgrade in some areas:
→ faster responses
→ more accurate reasoning
→ way fewer hallucinations
→ actually admits when it doesn’t know something (this is big imo)
but also less big in other areas:
→ still loses context too easily when iterating
→ feels polished, but not production-ready
→ app-building is more “demo” than dependable

Yeah I gave GPT-5 a try and was disappointed with the coding output - sticking to Claude Sonnet 4 for now!

@volobuilds sure they'll improve it as they go!!

@chhddavid Yeah I'm curious to see what happens because I saw the review by Theo Browne and he was super impressed - to the point where I feel like he was using a different model than what was actually released lol. I do like the price efficiency on GPT-5 so want to see if I can fit it into some of my workflows.
