Umbrel is a beautiful personal server OS that makes self-hosting apps like Nextcloud, Matrix, Bitcoin/Lightning node, Pi-hole, HomeAssistant etc. accessible to everyone. Install on a Raspberry Pi, or any hardware (or cloud) that's running Linux/Debian.

Umbrel is probably the easiest way to run lightning and Bitcoin nodes. I am super impressed by Mayank and Luke's vision to build a personal server OS to self-host a private cloud.

πŸ‘‹ Hey Product Hunt! Mayank here, co-founder of Umbrel (https://umbrel.com). In 2020, my co-founder @lukechilds123 and I started working together on Umbrel (we got lucky to have met each other right before the pandemic). We wanted to build a personal/home server OS that could allow us to self-host our own private cloud with apps like Nextcloud, a messaging server with Matrix, home automation with HomeAssistant, a Bitcoin/Lightning node, and more. πŸš€ We launched in 2020 with a focus on the Bitcoin space and have grown to over 17,000 users since. You can install Umbrel on a Raspberry Pi 4 with zero technical skills, or on anything that’s running Ubuntu/Debian. πŸŽ‰ Features:
 - Beautiful web-based dashboard with dark mode. - Discover and install open-source self-hosted apps like Pi-hole, Nextcloud, Matrix, HomeAssistant, Bitcoin/Lightning node, and more. - One-click OS and app updates. - Remotely access your Umbrel from anywhere using Tor or Tailscale. - App sandboxing, permissions, and dependency management. - Built-in authentication and 2FA for all apps. - Monitor RAM and storage usage statistics. Umbrel is available for free and our source code is on GitHub. Visit πŸ‘‰ https://umbrel.com to learn more and find the installation instructions. Feel free to share your feedback or questions. Cheers!

@lukechilds123 @mayankchhabra what an incredibly cool offering - really embracing the paradigm shift I am seeing with IPFS and personal servers. Applied for an open role with y’all!

@graham_seymour glad to hear that! Thanks for considering us πŸ™Œ

Nice update guys! Using it daily and new update looks sweet πŸš€ I liked previous UI probably a bit more but maybe it's just because I'm not used to new one

Thanks @ryzizub! Haha I thought the same about the design at first, trust me it grows on you! Very curious to hear which apps you use the most daily?
David Salter
Umbrel has been amazing as a Bitcoin and Lightning node but has taken a step in to the future with the App Store. It's rivalling my Synology NAS for ease of use and functionality now to the point where I have migrated my first app across, Pi-hole which is running really well. Hats off to the Umbrel team for having the vision, drive and know-how to put this together.
Luke Childs
@dasalter Thanks for the kind words! What are the primary apps you use on your NAS btw?
David Salter
@lukechilds123 Primary Apps are Plex Media Server, VaultWarden, Homebridge, Node-Red, Synology Photos and Cloud-Sync for Files. Thinking about a migration plan, I will likely make the Synology a pure media server and Umbrel a Crypto, Dev and Home Automation platform for the near/medium term and then re-evaluate as Umbrel matures further. The only thing that concerns me with the Umbrel node is availability due to the single points of failure (although mine has been rock solid since build). Throw in RAID, ZFS or CEPH for HA file system and ability to HA across 2 or 3 Raspberry PIs either as warm standby or using Kubernetes and I am all in.
Luke Childs
@dasalter Nice, I need to have a play with Plex. I've been really enjoying Home Assistant on my Umbrel, it's probably my most used app. Remote access with the client app + Tailscale is really impressive experience. Totally agree regarding single point of failure, we do actually have some pretty interesting ideas on how to tackle this! 🀐

I want to thank the entire Umbrel team for their vision and dedication to making such an incredible platform, my journey down the bitcoin πŸ°πŸ•³ was accelerated after I bought my Raspberry Pi 4, SSD and loaded Umbrel and was able to run a bitcoin and lightning node. I also really appreciate their design driven approach to simplify and make running a personal server less daunting mainly for non-technical users. Keep up the amazing work, I'm a loyal Umbrel customer and excited to see all of your growth.
Mayank Chhabra
Wow, so happy to hear that! Thanks for being with us, Juan! πŸ™

Thank you @juangomez, love to hear that! ❀️

Do you have any recommendation(s) for non-Rasberry Pi devices that are small non-fan but perhaps with more growth potential? Would rather not use a laptop.
Mayank Chhabra
The choices among fan-less single board computers that are at least as powerful as Raspberry Pi are limited. ODROID comes to mind. You can also look into fan-less Intel NUCs β€” they're quite powerful. Anything that supports Debian or Ubuntu can run Umbrel so you have a lot of options!

How does this make money, and how is it different from something like Yunohost?
Luke Childs
@agentdrtran Great question! We plan to offer premium features in the future and partner with hardware manufacturers to sell plug-and-play home servers with Umbrel, but the base OS functionality, including what's available today, will remain free.

@lukechilds123 Using it daily and new update i am just liking it more
