Now there's an Uber for X platform, from Uber!
Giuliano Iacobelli
@chrismessina as anticipated when this went live, we've just completed the integration and Uber rush in now a building block in stamplay! Build uber rush powered apps is a few clicks away, what about writing a tutorial together?

@giuliano84 that's great! We should publish the tutorial on our developer publication. You can share a draft with me at messina at uber.com.
Nathan Lam
Any developer or business can now use the UberRUSH API to access Uber's logistics platform! We're super pumped to see what developers will build with this. Whether you're creating the next on-demand pizza or on-demand marketplace for drones, the UberRUSH API will help you focus on your business while we handle your logistics.

@whoisnatelam whill this be avaliable in singapore and asia? The api is open to everyone but not avaliable in other part of the world other than US right?
Juuso Haavisto
@v3ss0n "UberRUSH availability is limited to San Francisco, Chicago, and New York City. Pickup locations must fall in an eligible zip codes." https://developer.uber.com/docs/... Yeah, it is not available for now elsewhere than a few big US cities.
Roman Sedykh
@v3ss0n @whoisnatelam you can ask http://zap.delivery/ if they have such plans in Singapore. p.s. https://dribbble.com/shots/26517... :-)
Harry Raymond
@whoisnatelam very excited for this release. in many cases, this is half the price of FedEx or UPS.
Ryan Hoover
BIG move. This has been in beta for some time. Which companies/use cases are most interesting so far, @chrismessina @whoisnatelam?
Nathan Lam
@rrhoover Great question. I think any of the partners we featured on the video above have found a lot of success with the API (Pythagoras, Dryv, Ando, Mealmade, Up Sonder). These are only some of the on-demand businesses that we're working with. We've partnered with enterprise companies as well such as Nordstrom, 1800flowers, Harris Teeter, and Walmart just to name a few.
Jeff Nobbs
@rrhoover @chrismessina @whoisnatelam We've been using UberRUSH at http://mealmade.com since the beginning of the year and LOVE it. We call it our "delivery fleet in the cloud". Instead of loading delivery cars with pre-made meals, we can actually cook to order and there's always a courier a few minutes away ready to pickup and deliver. It's pretty incredible.

Does this mean that 1000 Uber for X Startups just went out of business, or does it mean they now have more work?
Michael Facchinello
@nivo0o0 It enables the 1000 Uber for Xs.... Try hiring drivers if you are a laundry startup -- not easy. And why as a driver would you want to work for that laundry company when you could work for uber.
Sean Murphy
@mfacchinello @nivo0o0 I agree but what laundry store is going to have their own app, and who is going to download an app for a laundry store or an individual store or restaurant. The API is cool, it's great, but why do we have to have 1000 Uber for Xs? Why not one app for any service?
Niv Dror
@mfacchinello ahhh that makes perfect sense :)
Michael Facchinello
@sean_murphy @nivo0o0 That question is one that dates back to Jobs vs Gates (Closed vs Open). The UX could be more seamless with something like that, but growth is slower. Uber is taking the approach that they will let other people build out their delivery business for them. I said above the UX could be better for an everything app but I think only if it were NLP based. Otherwise, it would be unwieldy and we just are not there yet in terms of quality of NLP, so probably does not make sense yet.
Sean Murphy
@mfacchinello can you explain NLP based? We are already doing it with ServiceX. One app for any mobile service. It's simple and manageable. www.servicexapp.com
Giuliano Iacobelli
Looks awesome! Congrats for the docs, as a developer so well designed and written API docs is not something you see every day đź‘Ť Looking forward to give it a try and make it available on Stamplay

Scaling delivery operations like AWS servers. You guys are solving really hard problems there...

What kind of products will you not allow on your platform using this API? Weed? Medicine? Hookers? Last one was kind of a joke yet curious to your hooker policy in general...hahaa
Nathan Lam
@coolbearcjs hahhaha. Right now we don't allow the following items: People or animals of any size, Illegal items, Dangerous items (weapons, explosives, flammable, etc.), Stolen goods, and Any items for which you do not have permission to send.
Michael Facchinello
@coolbearcjs If you need hookers delivered, just order an uberx or uberpool to the hookers destination then have it dropped at yours. MAGIC. haa
Sean Murphy
@coolbearcjs it's sad that we are all adults and we have so many people that want to control what we can and can't do, based on strict ideologies.
Ross Rojek
@whoisnatelam @coolbearcjs Well pot is legal in several areas, does that make it ok to add into an app? (serious question since we have some dispensary clients here in CA). I'm also sort of wondering about liability as well. If I'm using this for food delivery and the packaging gets crushed in transit, who's going to refund the customer?
Nathan Lam
@sacbookreviewer @coolbearcjs Great question. Regarding packaging getting crushed in transit, UberRUSH has insurance on situations like these up to $250. If the package gets crushed due to our service, we will take care of it.
Michael Pfister
Interesting to see more and more competition in this space. I wonder how postmates is taking it.
Sean Murphy
Do you think UberRUSH API is the solution? How many restaurants and stores have their own app? What if they don't have their own app, why not just have an app similar to UberEATS which delivers for any restaurant? Why do we need 1 million apps? Why not one app to handle everything or is that too greedy?
Nathan Lam
@sean_murphy that's a great question and totally see your perspective. I like to think of the RUSH API and the apps that come out of it as more of a way for individuals to express their crafts. Yes it would be easier to just have one app that does it all, but some people like to control their experiences :)
SANKET MEHTA
@sean_murphy why always an app, web app is also a solution and every provider must not neglect it and should strive towards making it better. With more controls coming to browsers like push notifications, it is possible to deliver equivalent solution.
Sean Murphy
@sanketmehta7 pcs are outdated. They have nowhere near the robust functionality and mobility as an app.
SANKET MEHTA
@sean_murphy yes, but mobile browsers are also now powerful enough and gives you better experience. Its just that providers needs to highlight more of their web-app along with mobile app. And provide similar exp. there too. I can see future on web coming, like chrome browser providing support for connecting BLE devices directly from browsers. If all goes well problem of getting your app installed on customer devices when they are struggling with storage issues on their devices will be no more.
Alex Saidani
@sean_murphy I think it's the same question as why does every retailer need a website or an online store? They don't... but almost all do - people want control over their own brand and want to be able to get to know their customers. Check out https://tryindemand.com
Danny J. Williams
Natural progression for Uber - great for smaller biz looking to provide on-demand services without worrying about the overhead and logistics. Look forward to seeing what comes out of this!
Nathan Lam
@dannyjpwilliams Same here!
Reuven Cohen
pretty cool. Wondering if I could use this API to deliver people.. like a house cleaner for a couple hours?
Chris Saad
@ruv you can use the Uber Rides API for that
Chris Messina
Top Hunter
Hunter
@ruv you should probably just user the Uber Ride Request API for that!

Pretty amazing! Going to allow companies to have better relationships with customers

So now stores don't need to list on any other on-demand delivery service. Just integrate Uber API and done. Is it direct competition to Postmate or Doordash?
Tyler Swartz
Congrats on the public launch of UberRUSH! I’m excited to see the mix of companies that take advantage of on demand delivery. This will be a big value add for companies, like Nordstrom, that want to provide the same delivery convenience that consumers have come to expect (partially due to Amazon’s same day delivery service). Cool to see Uber build tools that help improve other businesses.
Nathan Lam
@tylerswartz Thanks! Nordstrom is actually one of our partners :)
Grant
Very big deal! This is like AWS for startups, it might further open up the O2O world.
Nathan Lam
@grantgrantgo That's the plan! Glad you are excited as we are :)
Willy
It's like AWS for logistics
Nathan Lam
@pommalicious Bingo! :)
Jon Dobrowolski
Was really excited when Postmates did this (something like 2 yrs ago?), but I haven't seen a whole lot of interesting use cases develop.
Adam Evers
Brilliant.
Michael Facchinello
I have used uberpool several times to get things delivered to me. Worked seamlessly. Should be cool to see it in action with formality.
Nathan Lam
@mfacchinello Yea we've seen a lot of that in the past which is why we created a variety of UberRUSH products that cater to specific audiences. We also have an easy to use dashboard product that uses a web interface for those who are looking for a less technical integration that comes with the API. We are super excited about the possibilities :)
