Hello everyone! My name is Nakul and I lead Truecaller for iPhone. For the last 13 years, we’ve been helping our community of 300mn+ users to identify & block spam calls and now Truecaller Assistant takes it to a whole new level. This comes right after our recent revamp of Truecaller for iPhone which massively improves the ability of identifying spam calls on iPhone. Read more: https://www.producthunt.com/post... In today’s world, spammers have become quite sophisticated and the traditional ‘identify & block’ can fall a bit short. Spammers will keep calling using new numbers that are yet to be marked as Spam and we don’t want you to be fall prey to it. With Truecaller Assistant, you can choose your own AI assistant and let them take calls on your behalf so that you don’t even need to be bothered if the call isn’t important for you. You can always go back to the app and see the list of screened calls so that you know the context of each of these calls and choose to call back if you find it necessary. The hero feature of Truecaller Assistant is it’s Live Screening. With live screening, at first you see the caller’s name & reason for the call and you can keep the caller on hold and keep responding using predefined messages until you get a full context before choosing to pick up the call. This asynchronous way of responding to a live call can come very handy when you’re in situations where you cannot take the call. This is the just the first version of our new offering and we’ve a lot in store to bring out to you. If you’re in the US, please update to the latest version of Truecaller, buy a free trial and try out the feature. I’ll be looking forward to your feedback. Cheers!

This is a great use case for text to speech / AI-powered voice bots.
Nakul Kabra
@rrhoover Absolutely! That’s the ambition and we want to build this for a bunch of languages/accents so that the assistant can listen & respond accurately to all calls. Give it a try!

Wow, this is amazing and im downloading it right now. When I was in Europe and using a eSim, i didn't have a phone number for a week and it was beautiful 😂 Question - will i be able to set it so that certain people can go straight to me and not through the assistant? ie, if my partner calls? Or will every incoming call go through the assistant?
Nakul Kabra
@britt_joiner very valid question. By default every call goes via assistant but you can disable it for your phonebook contacts. The option to disable screening for a specific contact is a great idea. We’ll do something about it 🙌
Brittany Joiner {Britt the Builder}
@trppr gotcha that makes sense! honestly for any phone book contact is totally fine - as long as i have the number saved, i probably don't need to screen it. just toggled off the setting for phonebook contacts. can't wait to use this!! if this works as well as i hope it will be well worth the $4.99 a month!!
Nakul Kabra
@britt_joiner do let me know your experience using this. This is just our v1 and we’ve bunch of stuff in store. I’ll be waiting to hear your feedback!

One thing I hate about truecaller is they gather all of your contacts with names. And then they show that name to the other truecaller users if the number is not saved in contacts. So it's kind of giving me the name from the other's people contact.
Nakul Kabra
@abrardev99 hello Abrar, That’s a common misconception. We do not upload contacts with names. It’s against the rules of App Store & Play Store. Wrt Assistant, we need contacts permission so that we can allow the user to disable call screening for phonebook contacts. We also use it to temporarily create a contact, needed for Truecaller to show you an incoming call with a call reason. The temporary contact is automatically deleted at the end of the call. Hope this helps.

@trppr interesting! Truecaller collects names when the call recipient chooses add that information to Truecaller, right? (And it knows your name from when you sign up, which it shows to others.) I don’t use it anymore, but back when I need I remember getting a call from a stranger and the name showed by Truecaller was something like “my love” or “honey”. I suppose that somebody thought they were adding someone to their contacts, when in fact they were adding their “name” to Truecaller 😅

Nakul Kabra
@yashthakker Thank you, Yash!

Why is this only available in the US?? 😭 I’m so jealous of US citizens who can use this and Google Duplex. I feel really bad when picking up calls from strangers, and this would be super helpful to me.
Nakul Kabra
@anna_0x Hey Anna! It’s currently optimised best for telecom operators in the US. Moreover, it needs a lot more work on supporting new languages/accents which is what we’re working on and we’ll launch soon in other markets too.
Nakul Kabra
@trppr I understand your frustration though 🥲
Anna Filou
@trppr I’m sure adding new languages is a ton of work, but English would be fine for me~ (But, as you said, the accent plays a role too and there’s a lot of them in Europe.) I’m not sure what “optimised best for telecom operators in the US” means in practice though. Anyway, hope to see this launch in the EU sooner than later!
Nakul Kabra
@anna_0x hey Anna, Thanks for a great response! The feature depends on how calls are forwarded (Conditional Call Forwarding), how the Assistant "picks up" the call and how they are re-routed back to the user (if you want to talk to the caller) and all of this depends a lot on your telecom operator. If you can tell me which country/operator you're on and if you'd like to join our beta program, I can sign you up and try to enable the feature for you. It'll be great to get some feedback from you! Regards.
Anna Filou
@trppr thanks for explaining! That’d be awesome. I’m in Greece and my operator is Cosmote. I also have a Dutch vodafone number. You can reach me at hello [at] first name last name [dot] com.
Nakul Kabra
Thank you @kevin for hunting Truecaller Assistant!

Does it work with Google Voice #s?
Nakul Kabra
@hasan_diwan hey Hasan, this currently doesn’t work with Google Voice calls.

@trppr Is support on your roadmap?
