Thunkable ✕ is a cross-platform app builder that enables anyone to build their own native mobile apps. All apps built on Thunkable ✕ work for both Android and iOS devices. You can easily design beautiful apps, program powerful functionality with drag & drop blocks and then upload your apps to the Google Play Store and App Store.

Arun, congrats on the launch! Can you talk about how Thunkable product has evolved over time, and where you see yourself going with it in the future?
Arun Saigal
@eriktorenberg Thank you! When we first launched, Thunkable was Android only. The plan was always to enable users to build apps for Android and iOS, so creating a cross-platform was the next step. We then built Thunkable X from the ground up, on a modern technology stack that enables users to design beautiful apps, and integrate the most powerful and recent technologies. Now that Thunkable X is live, we are focused on expanding the functionality of the platform. We are working on deploying new features and functions, and integrating new technology such as Bluetooth capability, push notifications, AR, VR and AI. Our goal is to enable users to easily build, design or prototype anything they can think of.

I’m looking for a quick solution to build an app that’s only function is to deliver in app notifications based on activity that happens on a web app I have. So for example something happens on my app right now and I notify the user by sms using the twilio API. I would much rather deploy a sister-app that my users could install that would allow me to send them native notifications. Does your product allow for this?
Primer
@batsirai_chada the maker has been active on this page since asking this question, and they haven’t answered. So I assume it’s not possible.
Michael Gallagher
@batsirai_chada @mickc79 we don't currently support push notifications but we plan to in the future.
Angie
Hi, the website states that your service is free to use and there's a maintenance fee for the use of certain components. Could you tell us what the maintenance fee is? It is not disclosed on the pricing page. Thanks!
Arun Saigal
@angeliquesocial Absolutely. If you use a component that is revenue generating, we will take a cut of that. Right now, in the documentation for each component, we explain specifically what we do. Here is the documentation for the Stripe component (we take a 2% cut), which is currently the only monetizable component on x.thunkable.com (though we plan to add more): http://docs.thunkable.com/thunka...

@aksaigal Thank you 😀

Hello Product Hunt, Big thanks to @justinkan for hunting us! We created Thunkable ✕ to enable anyone to build native mobile apps for both Android and iOS. Thunkable ✕ is a DIY cross-platform app builder, where anyone can easily design beautiful apps, drag & drop powerful functionality and then upload their apps to the Google Play Store and App Store. There are two parts to the tool: Designer: Allows you to create an app UI by adding different UI components to your screen, such as buttons, TextBoxes, GoogleMaps, etc. It also allows you to add non-visible components to your apps, such as SMS receivers or NFC sensors. Blocks: Thunkable has a blocks-based programming language that makes it easy for anyone programmers to use, yet robust enough to build unique, beautiful and powerful apps (you can make functions, variables, callbacks, etc.). You can also test your apps in real-time on your personal mobile devices with the Thunkable Live app, which is available for Android and iOS. We’d love to hear your feedback, and answer any questions you may have! Thanks, Arun

@justinkan @aksaigal If you are planning to do sales, reach out to companies who are hiring for mobile app developer or designer and have employee strength less than 50. They will be the right fit for you.
David Pripas
I'd like to create an app in which I take a photo (from within the app) or load one from the library, and then overlay resizable items (images) from a gallery on that photo. Is it possible with your product?
Wei Li
@david_pripas Thanks for the feedback! We don't have that now, but will add that to our to-do list :)
Wei Li
Do you have an idea for an app? Check out Thunkable ✕! We found that even building a simple app and seeing it right on your phone, is a pretty powerful experience.
Kara Ntumy
I think this product's concept is awesome - can't wait to try it out! A couple questions though; one, if I start building a simple app in Thunkable ✕, would it be possible to pass it onto an app developer to take it further in XCode? And two, can I upload UI designs from Photoshop or Sketch to build in Thunkable ✕ or do I have to design from scratch? Thanks!
Mark Friedman
@kara_ntumy On Q1, for now your professional app developer would have to recreate the app, using your Thunkable ✕ app as a guide. On Q2, we don't currently have the ability to upload UI designs from Photoshop or Sketch, but I'll definitely add that to our Feature Request list! Please do try us out and Happy Thunking!
Shakks
its not good that i am forced to log in even before i can see around.
Amos Gyamfi
@shakks I immediately closed the browser when I saw that.
Rachid
@shakks yeah ditto, i think they should have given a better link... https://thunkable.com/
Arun Saigal
@shakks and @amos_gyamfi Thanks for your messages. Unfortunately, I can't change that link on PH but as @Rachid pointed out, thunkable.com is our homepage and will tell you much more about our product!
Jamie Gordon
@aksaigal would of appreciated the ability to detect when a sound is playing. you should add "is" to your if/else.
Wei Li
@jamie_ross Thanks for the feedback! I just added it to our internal to-do list!
Ramy Al-Kadhi
I'd like to ask, how complicated an app can be built using this software?
Arun Saigal
@ramy_alkadhi We allow you to build apps that are very sophisticated (more so than other tools I've seen)- with things like mapping, chatbots, image recognition, payments, and more. There are certain components that we don't offer yet but are planning to add (like bluetooth). However, if we offer the capabilities you are looking for, you can utilize them in quite a sophisticated way. One of the things we focused on is making Thunkable simple enough for most folks to be able to use, yet having powerful capabilities so you can build a unique app that does something impressive and looks really good.
Ramy Al-Kadhi
@aksaigal Thanks for that. I think it's a great product that is incredibly powerful. I've played around with it and find it good to use, but do have a suggestion; I found the on-boarding too focal - it took me straight to building things. I think there needs to be more tutorials as well as videos explaining a long the way. Other than that, amazing work.
Wei Li
@aksaigal @ramy_alkadhi Thanks for the suggestion! We will keep that in mind :)
CA West IV
@ramy_alkadhi @aksaigal What about connecting to databases and APIs -- Specific views for logged users?
Arun Saigal
@arthur_west_iv we have an API component that lets you made http Get/Put/Post/Delete requests to any API you would like
Thomas Dermaris
Hi there, I am an ios developer but I also work as a teacher of informatics in secondary education. Your product reminds me scratch, a program that I teach to my students. This is a great work but I have one question: can someone build large scale apps with your platform, maintain them easily, use architectural patterns, and many many other technics that are so important if you want to build something really professional?
Albert Sanchez
@tdermaris Yes is good enough to get done anything of that, you can build complex data flows, it has to ability to program as a programming language without the headache of learning the syntax or grammar, that's what they call "blocks"
Andre Flores
Do you have live examples somewhere of apps built using your platform?
Arun Saigal
@andreflores87 If you go to https://thunkable.com/, we have a number of examples on our homepage. You can see more in our example apps: https://docs.thunkable.com/thunk... Lastly, when you log in to our platform, we offer a number of sample apps to get you started.
Andre Flores
@aksaigal yeah but all I see are screenshots... anywhere I could go through the app templates that you guys are offering to remix?
Mark Friedman
@andreflores87 From that second link in Arun's reply (i.e https://docs.thunkable.com/thunk...) if you click on "Click to remix" link in any of the samples, you'll be able to see (as well as edit, live test and build) the apps. You'll also see some samples in your projects list when you log in.
Andre Flores
@doingthedream yeah I did click that the first time I found the homepage, but wanted to see some examples just not screenshots before I sign up. Oh well, thanks though!
Tara Viswanathan
been following this project for a while!!! Cool to see them launching a cross platform app builder. Excited to try it out!!
Arun Saigal
@taraviswanathan Thanks for your support!
Karl-Hermann Rollke
One of the best ideas ever to enable everyone to develop and test apps for IOS AND Android with the same development environment.
craig franklin
super easy to learn and the tutorials are very helpful. how good are the backend capabilities. can i store user profiles like a dating site?
Dhruv Parthasarathy
The design looks fantastic and the ability to actually live test seems even better than the standard app development flow (at least on XCode). Sounds really promising and gonna check it out!
Wei Li
@dhruvp Thanks! We love to get more feedback from you once you start working on projects!
Albert Ching

The team behind Thunkable is very professional. I’ve been using their classic platform the past two years and they’ve always released products with great care and customer service

Pros:

Love the amazing design capabilities and live testing which makes designing an app in real-time so much easier

Cons:

Takes some time to become an expert

Carl Matheson
Terrible support that can't resolve technical issues A platform for kids to playaround with building apps don't expect to deploy anything real. Wasted weeks attempting to contact support due to production bugs on a paid planned and never got anything resolved. No contact / support email address to request a refund just a help chat.
Jared Gibb
This is the best on the internet today, in terms of drag-and-drop cross platform development arenas. I LOVE THUNKABLE X!!!! I was able to bypass paying a developer to create a product that I am now launching a research study with in order to complete my Master's degree!
Joshua Pinter
I wish it was this easy.
Mark Friedman
@joshuapinter Many simple apps are that easy. Our aim was to make it super easy to make simple apps while still allowing for the creation of more complex apps. Even for those more complex apps, we believe that we have made them simpler to create than existing development products.

Can I build an app to access the photo and video camera functions of the device
