The Guardian Version 5.0 brings a brand new look for the app, coinciding with the launch of the new Guardian newspaper in the tabloid format.

The design looks more like an old school newspaper. Interesting move.

@rrhoover Seems like a backwards move to me... Doesn't seem to be mobile-first design. My new local news site has responsive design and is focused on mobile, we are now seeing 95% mobile traffic. That's how to prepare for the next 5-10 years, not by launching a tabloid... And no I'm not posting my new co. on ProductHunt yet- want to wait for our app. AdaptBN.com

Very curious to see this brand redesign — love how prominently type design factors into so many of these projects lately (i.e. Dropbox, etc).

Interesting design, liking the bold colors!

The flat/material style is increasingly irrelevant and will go the way of Bootstrap style, big heros, etc. At least in my opinion. Maybe the direction MS is going in but it is still way too bulky and disorganized. I like this approach because it brings us back to our roots as a nation, ie; strong Rosie vibes. maybe im projecting...

EDIT: this redesign is bemusingly controversial

Pros:

This is absolutely wonderful. A throwback to retro design while still staying modern. Great job!

I'm loving the new Guardian Headline font, there's something almost retro about it, but it feels very clean and minimalist.

Not a fan of the new website. Feels far too crowded with a lack of focus. Quickly scanning the home page doesn't lead your eye to anything, with texts being given very little breathing room. All font sizes are also very similar, again making it very hard to differentiate and visually scan for articles I'm interested in.

Unnecessary clutter (why so many lines??). Feels agressive (red everywhere in News section?), it doesn't match my perception of the Guardian. Previous design was bolder & more balanced at the same time

There are some serious padding issues going on here... Why is everything so close to each other? Also, not to be harsh, but the footer hurts my eyes.

The Guardian on PH. Yeah. Always a great newspaper fighting for democracy and human rights- with a nice new design

In the words of Matt Turner, "yeah, the Guardian's attempt at solving their identity crisis has absolutely not worked". It's a bit bigger than cool fonts and aesthetic changes. They're trying to rebrand to have the strength and attention the new left wing media have, pretending to be like them but with more journalistic credibility, whilst still appealing to the centre and left of centre and it has turned out unsurprisingly awful. Neoliberal in a different font is still neoliberal

I'm not a big fan of the new design, maybe because the old one is what I am used to! :/

I'm really appalled by the lack of upvotes this redesign has.

Pros:

Feels amazing, easier to read, much higher quality.

Cons:

Not enough upvotes on here.
