Tender is a new kind of personal finance tool centered around an inbox-zero workflow.
With Tender you can review spending at your own pace without worrying that something might slip through the cracks.
Hey all,
I started working on Tender a year ago to help with my anxiety around my spending habits while funemployed last year. I wanted a way to convince myself that my spending wasn’t out of line, and my money wasn’t just disappearing into the void.
Tender was my answer - a way to get myself to be more mindful of spending without worrying that I’d miss something.
Some feature highlights:
🚄 A seriously fast UI that runs locally and supports mobile and offline mode
⚡ Keyboard shortcuts, bulk editing, and undo/redo for max product️ivity
💸 Get notified when the amount on your bill changes
🦾 A rules engine for quick automation
🤝 A Splitwise integration for easy splits for group trips, roommates, or your partner
🔐 Secure storage, sync, and login (we ONLY support biometric and google login to prevent phishing)
📥 Integrations with 12k+ banks via plaid (US/USD only for now)
We’re running Tender as an independent, bootstrapped business so we can really put our users first. Tender is a paid app, and it means we never show you ads, never sell your data, and never compromise the product for the sake of investors. Right now, we’re offering discounted pricing for our early adopters - $4.99/month or $49.99/year (2 months free).
I’m really excited to share what we've been working on! We have a live demo at https://demo.tender.run for you to kick the tires. If you have any thoughts, feedback, or feature requests I’d love to hear it - we’re just getting started.
Stephen
@max_savonin1 - thanks for the note! We thought a little bit about how a free version might work, but we didn't want to compromise our ideals on it.
For instance, the subscription fee we charge covers our on-going costs - for instance, linking with user's bank accounts comes with recurring fees for us. It's possible we could do a free version of the product that doesn't come with bank integrations if there's demand for it, but we suspect most folks want the automatic bank import.
@tony_xiao thanks! no api yet.. any thoughts on what you'd want do with one?
Since we're building the app to work locally on your device, it's a bit tougher to say how we might support API-like interactions.
We have a fledgling mobile support with our web app (works well with "add to home screen" tricks on ios/android: https://tender.run/install), but no plans for native app right now. We're hopeful that we can build a good mobile experience with the web platform.
@stpnwn I'd want to use it to get data in / out of the system. Hmm is data not stored in the cloud at all? And if it's local only data what about backup? And finally perhaps there can be a local API?
Tender looks great! I have over 10,000 emails in my inbox, hoping Tender can help me out🤣.
Also, I'm curious, how does Tender ensure the security of user data?
@bonvisions You know, the funny thing is we've heard all sorts of things from customers about how often they go through their inbox. I like to review my inbox every few days, but other folks have said they like to review each month. The nice part is that Tender works well to keep track of where you are, even if you have an inbox with 10k transactions. 😆
With security, there are a few dimensions. One is that we use the same encryption on disk and in transport your bank might to store user data in our backend.
For logins, we originally opted to only support passkeys (i.e. face/touch id/biometrics only) to login, but we've compromised and also support sign in with Google now. We didn't want to support traditional passwords at all because they're too easy to phish and compromise.
We also built Tender to work local-first, i.e. all of the operations involving your data (apart from bank import) happen on your device, which sets us up to support full end-to-end encryption in the future.
There are a couple other small details here in our security guide: https://tender.run/security
@yonz We have a small backend that does authentication and syncing tasks, so we associate the passkey credential and the stripe info there. We try to do as much as possible in the client, on device, but some things like auth, billing, and syncing need a server component.
Congrats on the launch!
Do you have plans to add tax calculation and for example a possibility to submit a tax self-assessment form?
Do you have plans to cover the UK and Europe? I would recommend using GoCardless instead of Plaid in this region
@laocool Thank you! We've been thinking about international expansion and when it makes sense to tackle - we actually just added a waitlist form on the website to gauge interest.
In particular, we'll probably start with support for multiple currencies (my banks are in the US, but I spend euros too sometimes!) and then move into adding more banking partners.
Congrats on the launch! I’ve been using Tender for about a month now and it’s a joy to use, going local-first makes such a tangible difference to how it feels as a user (compared to e.g. QuickBooks Online, which is dreadfully slow)
@paulgb Thanks Paul! Glad to hear it's working well for you.
It's interesting - for a bit I thought folks wouldn't care about the local-first angle as a technical detail, but I've been pleasantly surprised from the excitement about how fast we can make the app feel when there's no lag clicking around in it.
Splitwise integration - yay! I want to give it a try! Do you have any kind of daily reminders? I always struggle to remember adding cash payments by the end of the day.
A very interesting and convenient tool, I wish you good luck in the development of this product! Tell me, can it be used, for example, to manage a family budget?
@samsadlonka Thank you! You could use Tender for a family today, with a couple caveats.
One is that we don't yet have multi-user support, e.g. if you wanted to give different family members user accounts to the same budget. The other is that while we have some basic reporting tools for spending categories, we haven't built out the budgeting side of the equation yet.
Hello! I’m Yolanda and I’ve been working on Tender with @stpnwn for the past few months. It’s an incredible app, and I’m so excited that it’s finally being launched on ProductHunt for other people to discover and enjoy. As Stephen mentioned, we are super open to feedback, questions, etc. and would love to hear from you!
This is really cool. I'm curious if you're specifically going after spend tracking as the primary focus of this app, or if you have the eventual goal of adding a full suite of integrations for managing net worth calculations a la Copilot Money.
For what it's worth, I'm a heavy user of Copilot, but I think they leave a lot to be desired when it comes to reporting and spend visibility, and it seems yall are building as a more fully fledged solution for this part. That could be a great way to get people to switch over. If I could get a really responsive reporting tool that allows me to track spend of different categories with custom dates + cash income over time, that would be really cool. Copilot has all the data and all the barebones ideas here, but their UX is so bad for it and presents me a bunch of numbers that don't help me understand things better. Copilot also categorizes transactions into months themselves and doesn't allow you to select when you want to view over, which is super annoying. Again, they have all the ideas and data, but pushed some questionable product/ux decisions to users imo.
The features that are still most valuable for me from Copilot though are (in order):
1. credit card debts to pay
2. money in my bank accounts
3. spend tracking
4. net worth / investment tracking
Plus the fact that they have iOS support is huge. Curious if that's ever on your roadmap and how you'll think through the local-first approach there. I'm a mint -> copilot user and have a lot of thoughts lol so let me know if you have any more questions
@rnarayan7 Thanks for the note! Really interesting topic... we started with spend tracking and this inbox approach first because we think it's a first part of the puzzle we can immediately start providing value.
We're definitely thinking about where to expand from here - as you probably know with Copilot, some of our competitors have more breadth in features and Tender's scope is smaller in comparison. We're excited about building new features, but also want to be super intentional with how they really work and fit in, in a tight way.
One thing I'm super excited for is that the inbox naturally helps our users make sure their data quality is good - that transaction categorization is both useful and relevant. With that foundation I think we can do a much better job building reports that are highly useful and actionable for users.
I love Tender!!!
I hated keeping track of personal spending and never bothered with it before. But Tender has made the process so easy and fast, that I now regularly get to inbox zero! With the rules that automatically categorize transactions and nice UI to quickly go through them, I can get through all my transactions in just a few minutes. And being able to do that on my phone when I'm out and have a spare min is really nice too. My boyfriend always nagged me about being more responsible about my finances, so Tender has really been a game changer.
i've been using tender for a few months and i'm a big fan of the inbox zero approach to expenses and the fact that i can finish in 2 minutes, freeing up the rest of my week
Ok this is brilliantly cool. Keeps your finances front of mind and uses a tool format that we’re already using! Love the live demo interaction that you shared too. Congratulations on the launch!
I’ve been using Tender for a few months now and it’s the best personal finance tool I’ve used so far. My personal goal is being able to just track my spending to see where my money goes without creating budgets and goals. I like that now I can easily go in and quickly categorize my spending, link venmo payments that I receive, directly put expenses into Splitwise, etc. Tender does all of that very quickly and intuitively! It’s super easy to set up and it offers me great peace of mind knowing where all my money is going to.
Impressive work on Tender! Your focus on user privacy and product integrity stands out. The feature set seems robust, and I appreciate the emphasis on mindfulness in spending. I'll definitely explore the demo and consider its utility for my financial management needs.
As I embark on my journey as a maker here on Product Hunt, I'll be launching a social media marketing platform this Saturday. I value your input and any advice you can offer would be invaluable. The platform aims to assist brands and creators in enhancing audience engagement on social media through gamification mechanics and social farming.
Congratulations on launching Tender! I appreciate the approach of bringing detailed insights similar to what platforms like QuickBooks offer for company accounts in personal finance management. Since this involves connecting to bank accounts and handling sensitive data, I didn't notice any trust seals or certifications on your website. It might be beneficial to highlight such credentials to help build trust with users. Do you have these?
@jonwhitby Thanks! We have an overview on our security practices and how we treat user data here: https://tender.run/security
We haven't looked into site seals before, primarily because the landscape there is a bit unclear on which ones users might care about seeing or not. If you have any suggestions I'd love to hear it.
