With remote work on the rise, there's a growing need for more flexible, spontaneous, real-time communication. Tandem has put a lot of time into delivering a beautiful app that makes it dead-simple to talk with your team.
We have a distributed team at YC and it can be a struggle to stay in sync. Several of the partners have tried this and we've been extremely impressed!
Hi all! Bernat here, Co-founder and designer at Tandem.
Feel free to nag me if anything is confusing, as it will most likely be my fault.
Also, shoutout to any remote dads for being awesome. Being part of my son life (now 1 year) thanks to working remotely has been a blessing. Tandem was born out of the need to balance family life and high speed tinkering :)
@bernatfortet what an amazing reason to create this product. I was stuck with Skyping/ Hangout when my little one was, well little :). Congrats and all the best guys!
@bernatfortet remote dad here! My little one is 18 months - love working remotely so I can spend more time with them, and hope Tandem can help with that!
Thanks, Gustaf!
Hey PH community! 👋
We started building Tandem when two of us had kids and started working from home more. We tried a bunch of different tools, but hated the friction in all of them.
We've all worked on remote teams before, but even with our experience, we felt slower, less collaborative, and more alone when we worked remotely. We built a one-click calling prototype, added video and screenshare, and this eventually became Tandem.
Some details on how ⚡️instant calls⚡️ work:
- You can click on someone and talk immediately, but they will be on mute until they accept.
- All calls start as voice, but can be upgraded to video and screenshare.
- Customizable rooms are a nice way to invite teammates to talk when they're free.
Some details on app presence:
- Your teammates will be able to see which work app you're currently in (only for a select set of integrated apps) - this gives everyone a sense of being together, and helps you know when a teammate is interruptible.
- You can go into Focus Mode if you don't want to be bothered, in which case your app will not be shown.
Pricing: 14 day free trial, then $10 / active user / month
or...FREE for the Product Hunt community if you can hop on a short feedback call every-other week. This helps us learn, and we can also help you get more out of Tandem.
We are constantly improving the app, so tell us what you think. With your help, we can make remote work more collaborative and social! 🙏👥👌

We're not a distributed team, so I am not sure if we're going to use it, but I will keep you in mind for future. The product sounds super useful.
@bernatfortet great website design ;)
Changes the remote-team game. We use Slack and have tried all the tools and apps out there for running our teams (I have 2 companies: 1 with 8 and another with 3). This changes the game for communication. It's fast, it's reliable (once the initial setup bugs get out of the way), and just works.
You guys rocked this and meet our needs. Talking with a remote team member is now as easy as popping into their virtual office for a chat.
Wow, awesome to see this at the top of ProductHunt!
I was introduced to Tandem right before they changed the name from Wisp. Our team has been using it for about 2 months or so, and it has been a really nice way to start conversations.
Working remote, you find that there is this weird social awkwardness over starting calls or wanting a super quick call with another teammate. Tandem has the best solution for that problem from what I've seen thus far.
The team works hard and cares a lot about customer feedback which is awesome. Keep it up!
I started using Tandem this week, can't complain so far. There's room for improvement but the seamless hopping in and out of rooms to talk is great and makes it feel very natural vs "let's schedule a call"!
@fanahova thanks for being a Tandem OG 😎!
We're super excited to start rolling out some of the things we've been working that will improve the experience a ton!
Hello, after I installed it and tried to open the software it did not work. It opens and instantly closes. I also checked the taskbar minimised apps and Tandem is not there. Windows 10, 64-bits user + really good pc configuration.
Looks really awesome, I love how refined UI seems. Quick questions: what is the main reason that you wanted to have this feature that shows what app people are using at a time?
@mmincer A few reasons:
1) We wanted to have a sense of presence - feeling like you're next to your teammates, but without having a camera on you all the time (like Sqwiggle). We found the work app to be an excellent way of showing presence.
2) We wanted to give each other a sense of availability, without requiring us to constantly update a status. So as a product manager, I can look over and see @iambetaful in VSCode / Terminal, and understand at-a-glance that he's coding and I shouldn't bother him.
Showing the app allows Tandem to do some really helpful things as well. If I'm on a conversation and Tim's talking about a document, I can use Tandem to go directly to that document.
Hope this answered your question, and keep the questions and feedback coming!
@mmincer Yup! It's kind of like Figma's Multiplayer feature where you click on a person's face to go to them. We took a lot of inspiration from @zoink and team :)
We've been using Tandem for a while now and find it to be a more seamless alternative to typing in '/call' in slack. The one-click connect is really sweet.
Slack's still very sticky for our team but a quick release of a Linux version of Tandem made quite the difference. Super excited to to see where this product goes!
@pachanas Yes, we have a whitelist only policy. We also have a Focus mode for times when you don't want to share your app.
We use both Slack and Tandem heavily all day. Slack for notifications and non-urgent messages, Tandem for blockers and screensharing. We're working on also being able to jump into a Tandem call straight from Slack when you need to do standup or a voice chat.
Love the onboarding flow including the walkthrough. Very friendly. The idea of using always-on presence to make remote people feel closer is brilliant. Looking forward to testing it further.
Congrats @rajiv_ayyangar and your entire team. This seems like such a simple idea when you read about it, makes you wonder if we need a product like this at all? But it all comes home when you see the visuals, and it becomes clear why something like this can be so compelling. Congrats again!
@bernatfortet the simplicity of it all. and how just with one click we initiate a collaborative experience involving video, screen/cursor sharing etc. what you have here, can be done elsewhere but as part of a sequence of steps.
Huge fan of Tandem so far! I heard about it through Bernat and think this is going to take distributed teams to the next level.
What I love about it:
- intuitive + beautifully designed UI
- simple + easy to use
- instantly connect to team members via video or audio chat
- instantly share your screen
I honestly feel like this is going to be a game-changer for working remotely. Excited to see the future of Tandem!
