Tandem — Limit Venmo requests & money fights with expense sharing

We were sick of endless Venmo requests and money fights with our significant others, so we built something better. Tandem imports expenses from your cards and allows you to seamlessly track, share, and automate expenses with your partner. Available on iOS.

This is pretty cool — like a mobile-first Splitwise? How do you identify the source of transactions? I find that that's one pain point of credit card transactions... it's often hard to tell what an expense or transaction was, especially for Amazon or Shopify orders!
Michelle Dear
thanks so much @chrismessina !🙂 we built Tandem to be quicker and more convenient than Splitwise -- no manual entry required because Tandem integrates with your cards and pulls in your transactions as they happen (then you choose which to split), and you can also automate the expenses you wish to split. Splitwise still requires expenses to be entered manually after referencing credit card statements or spreadsheets (given their focus is mainly on friends/roommates, this somewhat make sense because they don't have highly recurring, shared expenses like couples do). In Tandem, you can click into each transaction and see the specific card or account it's coming from, date, amount etc. but to your point you cannot go a level deeper just yet to see what was specifically in that transaction (say a big Amazon or grocery purchase). It is something we are looking into implementing, but candidly hasn't been a huge complaint from our users at this point. Really appreciate the feedback!
Jenny Fielding
Love that you are one of the first apps with instant transaction data, what have been some of the biggest surprises you’ve run into since launching?
Dan Couvreur
@jefielding Thanks Jenny! One of the more surprising aspects is the large population of users that choose not to settle frequently. Tandem is mainly a tool to ensure things are equitable and many users opt to let the ledger run until they go on a trip or make a major purchase to actually pay each other.
Michelle Dear
@jefielding thanks for the feedback, Jenny! @dan_couvreur point is great. Another surprise has been users have found a lot of subscriptions they had both been paying for (like Amazon, HBO, etc.), so it has saved them some money!
Sam DeBrule
Congrats Michelle!!

A perfect app for couples and would have come in handy when I was dating my wife :) I remember you showing me Tandem's demo in April last year, and I am super proud to see all the momentum and progress. Congrats Michelle and team!

Ilia Zintchenko
co-everything! seeing so many use cases for this!
Dan Couvreur
@ilia_zintchenko Thanks! We started with couples because they feel the pain point the most vs. an occasional group trip. There's also a bunch of other awesome products we can build for couples and their financial lives together!
Michael Silber
This is really handy. It's like having an ongoing Splitwise with your partner, friends, etc. I'm digging the learnings too.
Dan Couvreur
@product_at_producthunt Thanks for the support Michael! The big difference between Tandem and Splitwise is we're about 10x less manual -- we import all of your transactions so you can simply swipe to split
Michelle Dear
@product_at_producthunt thanks Michael!! the learnings have been awesome. we've had a lot of our users come over from Splitwise :)

@odt___ Thanks Odun, we tried to make the UX as simple as possible! We've found so many expense tools overcomplicate it for no reason!

hi @rrhoover !!🙂 absolutely, some other scenarios we've seen people use the app for are sharing business expenses (e.g. co-owners of a salon), co-parenting, etc. Thank for you for the feedback!
Jason Mandozzi
@rrhoover It's even better in your late 20's with a mortgage!
