Sutra is a new approach to online learning that that lets anyone create self paced, conversational courses that generate higher engagement, completion, and peer to peer connection using AI facilitation.
Hello Product Hunters,
I am excited to introduce Sutra to you. I’m Lorenz, one of the co-founders here. Sutra is an entirely new approach to online learning.
Here’s the problem with online courses: 97% of them don’t get finished, there’s low engagement, and there’s no connection - no opportunity for participants to learn with and from each other.
When my partner and I started taking online courses together we quickly realized that if we didn’t have each other, we would never complete the courses we started.
Self paced courses are hard to complete because they’re basically like a digital book. You’re entirely on your own. There’s no opportunity to meaningfully connect with, learn from, and be supported by other participants.
Sutra’s new Conversational Courses let you create rich, AI facilitated experiences that generate higher engagement, completion, and peer to peer exchange.
And, it’s super easy to create a learning experience like this.
Our Notion like editor lets your organize your content into sections divided by discussion prompts. To unlock the next section, a participant has to respond to the prompt. Our AI engine highlights the best responses, summarizes contributions, and finds connections between what people share.
(Check out the interactive demo we posted to get the idea.)
Participants automatically get notifications that engage them in meaningful conversation.
It’s like having a professional facilitator support your course to maximize participation and completion.
Sutra is super easy to set up and every participant in your learning experience makes it better. As participants share their understanding and experience, it improves the overall body of knowledge that your course covers. Our AI powered conversational engine makes sure the participants actually complete your experience, which in the long run also helps you make more money.
This is a total game changer and we’re super excited to be launching here on Product Hunt.
Thanks for your genuine feedback and support.
With love,
Lorenz
@lorenzsell congrats on the launch Lorenz and team, I’ve been looking forward to this. It’s such a great approach to enhancing your skills. I find my self getting bored in longer online tutorials and masterclasses. I feel this will help alleviate this. Excited to check this one out!
@claytonwalker yes, totally. The norm right now is long, self paced courses with endless module that nobody ever actually complete. There is so much room for improvement. We're really excited to see what emerges here.
@claytonwalker thank you for your support and yes this entire product is born out of my own inability to stay engaged and complete a self paced course over time. Let us know if you have any questions or feedback once you give it a try.
Very interesting take on the edtech piece. The industry ahs been learning towards the community model for years, but it's very rare that you see course content directly integrated with conversations from folks. Now with AI, it's much easier to moderate and summarize lots of content. When I was on YouTube, sometimes, I find the most engaging thing I learned is from the comment section.
Though, I see that you only demonstrated on feature in the demo video - would be more helpful if there are other product visuals featured here!
Congrats on the launch @lorenzsell and team!
@tonyhanded we're actually in the process of really narrowing our focus on this particular feature. Like you said, few other tools integrate the conversation piece directly into the flow of content like we do and we believe this is a key piece of the puzzle.
@tonyhanded thank you so much for your thoughtfulness here. I think other platforms are either learning platforms who were primarily designed around content delivery and later learned that people want community too so they added on a community forum space somewhere for people to connect, but it's not working so well. For us, it was important from the very beginning to integrate where the learning and conversation happen seamlessly.
Conversational courses is an excellent and practical use case for AI. It's really great to see this interesting take on tackling the issue of course fatigue. I have completed many courses, but most of them in isolation and at times I've wished to have at least one other person to bounce off. I'm really interested to follow how your product performs compared to more traditional courseware. Congrats on the launch and good luck, I'm going to check out your product!
@kodemunki thank you Dom, that is exactly the problem we're solving from and one of the reasons that took us on this path is when we were taking online course and few so alone and isolated in the process. This is a complete transformation of the traditional self paced experience. Thank you for your interest in following our work.
@10xmarketer ya, totally. The vast majority of courses don't get completed. I feel like there's a huge room for improvement in this territory. We're excited to be launching something that really moves the needle.
Have you created any courses yourself?
@10xmarketer yeah, there is so much wasted content out there and creators spend so much time and energy in setting it all up and then there's no way for them to tell what kind of impact their program is actually having on someones life. For the content to be truly valuable it needs to be applicable and the best way to figure out how to integrated it into someone's world is to share that with others.
This is an interesting approach to take with courses. Any stats on comparison to the traditional way as yet?
Congrats on the launch. Stellar use of AI!
@izakotim Most of our understanding with this approach comes from qualitative observation. We started Sutra in 2016. Since then we've design and supported hundreds of experiences and had over 50,000 people participate in group learning experiences on our platform. From what we've observed, the level of engagement and completion with this interactive approach is significantly higher.
Very good idea to try to offer learning in a way that it fits to all kinds of people. The logo looks a bit too much like a yoga studio, but I love the idea! ❤️💡
@michacassola LOL. We'll truthfully we are a bunch of yogis developing a learning platform that revolves around meaningful connection and conversation :-)
@michacassola :) I totally get that about the logo and the name right? We picked Sutra because it means thread of knowledge and we envisioned those threads of wisdom weaving together in community based learning.
@mikhail_sidakov ya, the live cohort learning space has gotten particularly competitive since COVID. But we figure there's been virtually no innovation in the self paced course space. And there's a lot of room for improvement. So we're hopeful we can make a dent :-)
@mikhail_sidakov@lorenzsell yes it is super competitive and we're optimizing for more meaningful connection and conversation amongst the participants and there is a huge opening for us to address the many issues with self paced courses. Thanks for you support Mikhail. Curious about your experience with online programs, what worked, what didn't for you?
This is truly a stand out community-led course solution. Two big differentiators I've seen as I've dove into this platform:
1) It is probably the most flexible platform I've came across for course creators. You can educate and engage in ways not possible in other tools. It allows for a lot more strategy for how you want to construct your course and build community amongst your course takers.
2) It feels like it is going to be much stickier for course takers. Sutra gets users use to engaging from the beginning and throughout, and then seeing other's answers as well. Gamification, social behavioral engineering - whatever it is, it's smart.
MY 2 cents to the Sutra team: keeping leaning in on both of these. Make it the most flexible and the most engaging. On the first point, I'd LOVE to be able to fully style my course for my brand + embed it on my website. Adjusting the color styling is a good start for sure.
Congrats on the launch @lorenzsell!
@robmcarpenter thank you for testing it out, I really appreciate your feedback. We do have a lot more customization on the Professional level plan where you can add your own branding, logos, look and feel to it very simply. We wanted it to be flexible and easy to use as we also have a large audience with thought leaders who use the platform who are usually in the 60+ demographic and not so tech savvy. And they enjoy using Sutra.
This sounds like a fantastic innovation, Lorenz! The challenges you've highlighted with traditional online courses are so real, and Sutra seems to be addressing them perfectly. The integration of AI to facilitate conversations and enhance peer-to-peer connections is a total game changer for online learning. I love the interactive approach with discussion prompts that unlock content. This not only boosts engagement but also fosters a sense of community among learners, which has been missing in many courses. Excited to see where this goes! Definitely upvoting! 🚀
This is such a great idea - online courses platforms like coursera are notoriously low completion rates. Offering a better way for students is a great idea!
What types of courses have y’all seen instructors predominantly making?
Congratulations on launch! Tradition courses are less interactive and more towards covering the topics instead of focusing on actual learning and community engagement. That's why we used to lost our interest over the time and couldn't finish most courses. Hope this new approach introduced by Sutra would help us learn better and actually improve the skills. Wishing you all the best for your future endeavors!
@aashrut_vaghani exactly, there are different platforms for different things. If you just need to memorize some information and there is no value in engaging with other learners around that content, maybe Sutra is not the right fit, but if you know you would benefit from conversational learning with others, than we are the right platform. Curious about your online learning experience, has it mainly been the traditional courses?
Sutra looks so powerful—it gives a lot of flexibility to the creators to build their programs strategically—for course design itself, the operations and workflow, and the marketing and positioning. I like how the product empowers me via modular components to build my stack, the community, the funnel, and its rich source of design components to customize the content experience is a huge plus.
Great work by the team, congratulations!
@vingar thanks for your support and feedback. Yes, it's an easy tool to use to set up your program, the landing page, collect registrations and manage all communication. I would say the best part is that it actually engages the learners with each other through meaningful conversation.
@vingar Thanks for you kind words Vinish. Running a learning experience has a lot of moving parts and we've built a tool that takes care of everything in one place.
