Steer is a native macOS utility that allows users to quickly fix and iterate their writing in any app or website. It is optimised for business communication, efficiency and speed. It never disrupts the workflow and is always one shortcut away.
Hey PH 👋 I'm Vojtech and together with my friend and colleague Daniel we're building Steer!
We're software engineers and we're on a path to build useful productivity products.
Business communication is something we have to do daily, whether it's with a client, a colleague or even writing PR messages.
Everyone makes mistakes from time to time and typos can shine a bad light on your reputation. We also found ourselves finding the perfect wording and word order which takes unfunny amount of time and effort that's better spent elsewhere.
That's why we built Steer—a small macOS utility that addresses these issues. It allows you to quickly select text in any app or website, launch it with a shortcut and gives you the option to either just fix the grammar and spelling or improve the wording .
I personally love it for the speed and extreme convenience 🔥
We've been in a closed beta with users that have been using it every workday and have had positive feedback. With those users we were able to nail down their pain points and streamline the app.
Now it's time to officially launch it and for the PH launch we are doing a 50% off for the monthly subscription (applies forever). No code required.
The product also has a 7 day free trial, no credit card required.
We would appreciate your thoughts, criticism, roast and feedback 🙏
P.S. We share our work here and here
@vojta_bohm Awesome idea! I just installed it and am testing it right now by adding some typos. Let's see how it works... it works pretty well. Congrats!
@vojta_bohm Is it possible to provide more options like "make it more polite," or warmer, or softer? It would be incredibly useful. Or can I customize the prompt myself?
@lightfield We wanted to make the flow as streamlined as possible which also means opinionated. We believe custom prompt is not the way to go. However, change of tone is something we really are considering. Thanks for the notion. Any other options beside 'warmer/formal'?
Hey Vojtech, congratulations on launching Steer! The concept of enhancing communication efficiency is definitely a game-changer for professionals. I'm curious, what has been the most surprising piece of feedback you've received during the beta testing? The shortcut feature sounds super handy for quick edits. Cheers to your success and the special launch discount! Looking forward to seeing how it evolves.
@alex_dulub Thank you for the support Alex! I think it was that many people write a completely illegible message and use Steer to fix it to make it coherent :D It didn't occur to me people could use it like that.
@alex_dulub@vojta_bohm I'd think that would be the most helpful use of Steer, being able to quickly type out an idea/the message you're conveying and not have to worry about fancy and polished language, for a quick email for example.
I like it—a lot! This is what Grammarly should have evolved into, but it hasn't. The very simple but effective popup is perfect. Does Steer take into account historical messages to improve the current message with more context, or does it only use the highlighted text?
@dan16 Thank you Daniel! Right now it’s really simple. Just the highlighted text. We don’t store any historical data for simplicity and privacy. We might look into this in the future though.
Impressive launch @vojta_bohm !!! I'm sure Steer is gonna help me a lot with my writing tasks. Happy to see you addressing something like that. All the best here!
@german_merlo1 Thanks for the support! Please give it a try; I believe you'll find it really useful. I use it a lot myself, especially today, maxing out the usage on PH comments :D
If you try it, let me know what you think :)
Hi Vojtěch, I simple love this product. Super cool and UX is just what I love. I use raycast and steer's similar UX is surely great as it is relatable and has no learning curve.
Other thing I liked about your launch is the video. You so nicely explain everything that there was no need left to read anything else. I have a question: How did you add those cool zoom effects and focus shifts in the video? is there a tool I can use for that?
@kshetez_vinayak Thank you for the feedback! I'm glad to hear that people find the learning curve manageable. Do you see yourself using Steer instead of Raycast? If not, what feature would persuade you?
Yes, the tool is called Screen Studio. It's a handy little tool that also generates captions. We made a shoutout in this launch (see above).
@vojta_bohm if i am correct, steer is only for text manipulation. On the other hand, Raycast is spotlight replacement. It just includes everything and we can add more using plugins. You guys target different audiences. Maybe you can create your own plugin for steer in raycast as well to reach their audience as well.
The UX / UI looks great. Seems like a space that is starting to have a lot of competition. I have two plugins running on my browser for this at the moment. Once solution that could do everything would be awesome.
@jsteneros What plugins do you use? What for? What does your workflow look like. We would like to capture the essence of business communication so you don't have to use multiple apps & plugins.
@bonvisions Thank you for the feedback :) What exactly do you mean by the copy-paste method? With Steer you do not need to copy anything.
With Grammarly you have to click through each mistake one by one am I right?
@skavhellen Good question. Yes, since it runs on GPT-4, it supports multiple languages. We tweaked the model to detect the language and respond in whatever you input. Although, English performs the best, of course.
@karanveer Hey Karanveer. Good questions -> it's the efficiency and ease of use.
You can of course use ChatGPT but imagine this workflow -> Select text, copy it, open browser, navigate to chatGPT, paste the text in, explain what you want with a prompt, wait for result, copy , switch back to the previous app, paste the text back in.
With Steer -> Select text, hit CMD+D, select your option with an Enter, and paste the result back with Enter. Much faster workflow :)
As for other softwares with similar approach -> they try to be the Swiss knife while we try to drill down to a specific problem—which is professional communication. We iterated the software based around this idea.
@karanveer That's a great question. The flow isn't very efficient since you have to manually click through each change. Also, their widget can be quite obstructive in the UI. We wanted to be more subtle, always in the background, ready to fix your entire paragraphs with one shortcut :)
Congratulation on the lunch, you got my upvote ! a really needed application, quick activation is that's what I like the most. Can you also add a feature of notes saving of the things it optimised so that I can review them later and learn from them in order to improve my skills.
for example : if it corrected me in some line and I did that mistake again then it'll alert/remind me so, in this way I can keep track of my way of writing in order to improve it.
Best of luck for your journey : )
@ajay_kumar_yadav4 Thanks for the support and for the feature suggestion.
It's interesting, that could serve as a learning tool as well. We will note it and if more people have this suggestion we will consider implementing it :).
DON'T WORRY ABOUT THE WORDING, JUST STEER IT.
In love with this app 🤍 using it since the very beginning.
This is the type of macOS app I would install right away on a new computer. Must have!
I use some browser extensions for grammar checking, really miss this while working in native apps. I think your product is able to solve my problem, congrats on the launch!
So I have 2 Macbooks; One is completely inoperable, the other has a busted keyboard. I can completely see this working for the one that at least has a keyboard with a few functioning keys and will give it a try!
@vojta_bohm It turns out my MacBook won't update beyond 11.7.10 and Steer needs at least 11.7.12 if I remember correctly. Do you have an older version with the same functionality for those of us with really old Macbooks?
@runtcpip Ah, that's a shame :( Unfortunately, we don't. The minimum system requirements (macOS 12 and up) are there because the code would get too complicated and hard to maintain otherwise.
Really nice product @vojta_bohm and team. I’m convinced that breaking out of the browser into native interfaces is the future of AI tools, and MacOS is still where is spend most of my time at work.
@vojta_bohm@bob_coletti Yes, I couldn't agree more. The top 5 models will have similar quality; what matters is their distribution and integration into people's everyday lives.
Test it out and let us know if there are any features we could add for the next versions.
Nice! It would be awesome to have something like this to ensure consistent brand voice in marketing copy. Something we struggle with is maintaining one brand voice and “personality” across so many different writers and functions
