StartUp Season 3 - 4: Dear Music Fans... — This is the story of Grooveshark

Great storytelling here. Probably my favorite of the new startup seasons (2 + 3) so far.

I didn't realize Grooveshark almost died early on

Feels so conflictory that they had the initial idea to make it so they would spread the wealth but as they grew didn't want to work with music labels.

Notes: When a group of college kids in Florida set out to change the music industry, they did not anticipate quite how disruptive they would be. Their mission was a noble one: bring an end to online piracy by offering cheap, convenient, and legal access to music. Their execution, however, was less than thorough. And when you're dealing with protective music labels, forgetting to dot an "i" or cross a "t" can mean being one lawsuit away from the swift and unceremonious death of your company. This is the story of Grooveshark, the people who built it, and the relationships that were tested during its rocky road to growth—and eventual demise.

I remember Grooveshark! I used to use it all the time, for some reason I really liked it :)

Super amazing podcast, loved the first season

I got Grooveshark banned from my high school after I started streaming it when I listened to homework in the library :(

As a student who lives in Gainesville and attends the Univ. of Florida, this was awesome. Such an informative piece.
