Why do Claude, Gemini & Grok all rank OpenAI #1? 🤔

I tested 5 different AI models: GPT-4o, Claude, Gemini, Grok, and Sonar, with the same question:

“Who are the top AI model providers?”

💡 The surprising part? Every single one of them put OpenAI first.

Even Claude (Anthropic) and Grok (xAI), which are direct competitors, ranked OpenAI ahead of themselves.

I tried running this search over and over with different parameters, hoping to see a variety of results.

After several attempts with no change, I decided to raise the question directly with OpenAI to understand why this might be happening.

Here are a few possible explanations:

Training data bias → most coverage still points to OpenAI as the leader
Brand dominance → “OpenAI” has become almost synonymous with cutting-edge AI
Neutrality and safety guardrails → models may deliberately avoid self-promotion
Historic timing → ChatGPT’s breakout moment cemented global mindshare
