Thanks for answering questions here @jpalley! Can you elaborate on what "state of mind tracking" means, if it's not too close to your "secret sauce"? I couldn't tell from the FAQ - does Spire buzz to remind you to breathe when you're seeming anxious (or whatever situations this makes sense)?

Wow, only 66 left already. BTW, if anyone is on the fence for pre-ordering, perhaps my link (we both get $10 off) will push you over the edge? https://spire.io/r/te6xzu (@rrhoover LMK if links like these are allowed. Think it's transparent and win-win, but feel free to delete)

@jpalley BTW, it occurs to me I'd love to combine Spire's app with calm.com's. In other words, once Spire is collecting data on my mood, one logical extension is help me change that mood. Spire's buzzing seems like a start down that path. Some audio and visuals to help be more relaxed (or energetic, or focused) at the right times would be great too.

oh yes @staringispolite... calm.com would be a perfect match!

sometimes I just forget to breathe! love the thought of this wearable. Edit: after sleeping on it I just ordered. Thanks to the referral code below via @staringispolite the $10 discount went towards the reasonable international shipping fee of $15. This gadget epitomizes cutting edge wellness technology. You could be walking 20k steps a day but in the rest of your time being a stressed animal. I can't wait to see how spire will help me create more balance and better breathing.

super cool Jonathan - what's the story behind spire? why / how did it start? what are future plans for spire?

Played with a Spire prototype recently and it's pretty awesome looking. My mind goes wild thinking of the fun ways apps could interface with a breath-detection device.

@staringispolite, @helencrozier -> Absolutely. We've got a lot of ideas/partnerships in the work to combine our data. This is really at the core of the whole idea of Spire. What happens when we make our technology aware of our state of mind? There are so many integrations possible from productivity apps to cars to health too....this is where we want to go!

I realized I also didn't talk about the story behind Spire. Check-out Neema's blog post about the origination (http://blog.spire.io/blog/2014/6...). Spire came about from Neema's research and work I was doing while running a big data consulting company based in Beijing. We were trying to put our knowledge of big data + hardware to use in solving the issues of pollution and the massive effects we felt/measured it had on our health and productivity. In the process we figured out how to capture respiration data in a wearable form factor. We combined that with Neema's fantastic work on breathing and State of Mind and realized we might be onto something! We've been developing the commercial product for the past two years.

Hi all - things have been a bit crazier then we anticipated this morning...I want to give the thoughtful responses this site is known for. To start: Science: "State of mind" means things like focus, calm and stress. This isn't really our secret sauce, but rather based on a lot of science in the lab. We are taking that science out of the lab. Check out the "science" section of our FAQ https://spire.io/faq We are going to be publishing a lot more about this in the coming week on our blog. Notifications: Yes - the device can buzz as does the app. Its configurable: when stressed for a while, when focused, when you've been sitting too long and so on.
