This is cool:
There's no clear indication to consumers that the counter is connected online, updated in real-time. I can imagine more people would feel compelled to follow the brand/company on Twitter, IG, or Facebook if they knew this. Thoughts, @goyer?
@rrhoover Yes, we let the display around the product in the hand of our clients, the goal here is to provide a nice tool that can fit with most of the branding of shops, bars, restaurants...etc so we didn't want to impose anything around it. We know that our first clients speak a lot more of what they're doing online since they have the object and some of them build crazy displays (like "one like = one shot" in a bar...etc).
@ylannw We're working on a custom version, everybody will be able to print it's own logo on the wood panel (and of course link-it to any online data through an API). This wil be live on the website in september (but we can already make them so shout us an email if you want to be one of the firsts!).
Man this is really cool for SMBs and pretty much every brick and mortar company I can think of! Linking what happens on Social media with "real life" is a fascinating problem to solve, and it baffles many. Seemingly simple ideas like this help move things forward and open a lot of cool creative use cases. Do you know places that use Smiirl in Paris that I could visit ?
@thibautdavoult Hi Thibaut! Thanks for your enthusiasm ;) You can visit Les Niçois in Paris, one of our client, a great "pétanque bar" with cool things to eat!
I first heard of Smiirl when I noticed an early version of the counter in an apartment we were staying in here in Paris, France. The place belonged by one of the team running the NUMA accelerator where Smiirl were a previous year's cohort, and the device looked awesome.
The IOT potential here is really cool, and we were brainstorming about fun ways to use it in terms of IRL customer engagement before we even knew that the founders were in the same startup family as us. The quality of the flipping mechanism is very cool, and the build is what I would call typical of French startups... obsession over aesthetic and quality (if not perfection).
Now just to order one to count "Total number of times my cofounder sends me an Invision design link" :P
Ah... damn. I saw this and was immediately ready to buy one. But then I hit the price page and got a bit of sticker shock. I was expecting something nearer to $100. I'm curious if your current pricing is because the raw material, hardware and production costs to make this device are indeed high, or if you are just taking a strategy geared towards converting more established business owners with money to spend.
@skrypt We'd love to make it slightly cheaper but making a mechanical device like this one is pretty expensive, if you look at the price of high quality big split-flap clocks (without wifi and control systems to display the right number), it's not cheap at all. We wouldn't have launched these products if our primary targets (shops, bars, restaurants...etc) couldn't afford it, it's the kind of amount they already spend on marketing displays or furniture/decor expenses.
Hey all! I'm the CEO and Co-founder of @Smiirl, feel free to ask me anything, I'll be happy to answer ;) And here is a special discount of 10% off for Product Hunters: http://www.smiirl.com/store/limi...
