Maker of SALT here! @adriangrant thank you for hunting us. My partner @ruddct, and I will be here all day responding to questions and feedback.
Just some quick background on SALT. SALT is mobile application and community to bookmark and share great restaurants, bars and cafes. Put simply, we’re a more social, easier to use, replacement to those spreadsheets or notes that everyone keeps to track places they love or want to try. We decided to initially tackle the problem of figuring out where to go to eat or drink from a new direction. Instead of pushing recommendations, we help you collect and share the recommendations you get, wherever you get them.
Thanks @adriangrant! The whole team over here has been working like crazy on this over the past few months, we'll be here all day to answer questions, respond to comments, etc!
@cherif Unfortunately our restaurant data provider only operates in a handful of countries right now (not including Canada). We're looking into what it would take to get the app into more markets, stay tuned!
great service but feels like a feature more than an entire company .. i assume this is the "thin edge to the wedge" with a more robust product roadmap behind it. can you share what else might be in store?
@nihalmehta Spot on. Our app deals with place 'recommendations'. Right now the app is focused on what happens when you *get* a recommendation for something (an unsexy problem with high switching costs/a relatively high barrier to entry that our small team can dominate).
In the coming months we're focused on the workflow for what happens when you want to share/collaborate on recommendations with someone.
Beyond that, we're interested in the finding of new recommendations.
The aim with all of these is to:
* Treat a recommendation as a more permanent entity than many competing products; a thing you might want to collect, go back and refer to, make notes on or share with others
* Display recommendations that are relevant to you, with context
* Focus on workflow and community
Our app is, now, focused on place bookmarks. Most of the things we've spent time building are generic to other verticals of recommendations, though. That's for even further in the future!
I was also driven to use Salt because the Yelp bookmarking product is horrendous. So far I've been really happy.
One nice personal touch: I received a personalized welcome video after signing up! https://youtu.be/e0zWIiakRhU
@christyler thank you for the kind words! By focusing on bookmarking and creating lists we can go really deep in this area. For other companies it feels like a "bolted on" feature, not core to their DNA. We have some incredibly cool features coming out soon that I think will blow your mind and make figuring where to eat and drink easier and more enjoyable than ever before. Keep an eye out!
Yeah videos are a ton of fun. When we say our community is #1 we mean it. Hopefully doing a few thousand of them, reflects that :)
@alejandrochahin Great question! The short answer is that we focus on what happens once you *get* a recommendation about (or already like) somewhere. Yelp focuses on the discovery of new recommendations.
Once you start saving the recommendations you get in the app (which we've spent an inordinate amount of time making super easy), you have a comprehensive list of places that are relevant to you and a kickass workflow for searching, sorting and filtering through them.
SALT lets you easily create shareable lists, filter by places you've been and want to try, and leave private notes for yourself. Everything you do on SALT is private unless explicitly shared, so the app is closer to a personal journal of places you like or want to try.
@alejandrochahin Yelp has had a terribly underwhelming bookmarking and organization experience for ages now. Bookmarks is hidden deep within their web app and not much better on mobile.
Looking forward to trying Salt and hoping it solves these problems, especially seeing lists of places my friends have made. They seem to know where all the great spots in the city are!
@karanbhangui Yep, that's exactly what we had in mind when we built this. Many large recommendation companies (e.g. Yelp, 4sq, etc) treat places as items in feed, things that are transient and go away quickly. We treat places as a unit of work, things that stick around for a while that you might want to refer back to, leave notes on or share. It's a small difference, but we feel like it's an important one.
(That's not to hate on Yelp/4sq/etc, I'm a user on of those on occasion!)
Really great app. Way better than the note I keep on my phone of all the places I want to try! I also love that I was able to send my old list to you guys. My app was updated in no time! The minimal design makes it so easy to do a quick write up and be on my way. Definitely will be pushing my friends to get this. I am a fan!
@jhwayne1 thank you Jake! Yeah we realized pretty early on that one major hurdle we faced was that many people kept lists already in notepads or excel files. It helps with onboarding of new users and getting people started with SALT.
Is it just me or Salt has been discontinued? I tried all my cyber sleuthing skills and couldn't for the life of me discover what happened. I love what Salt is from what I read, and I am dying to use it.
