I built this Roku screensaver as an experiment to:
1. Explore Roku's OTT developer platform
2. See how fast the app would grow organically, considering the platform's limited marketing opportunities (and hit driven nature)
3. Understand how people are using their OTT devices
4. Turn that "What should I watch?!" indecision time into something useful
5. Make NYC commuting a little less awful
Roku, in my opinion, offers the best OTT / cord cutting experience. But, the development environment has a steep learning curve. Which is a shame, because there are millions of installed devices around the world, and you can monetize your OTT app on Roku easily (Mine is free).
I decided to start with screensaver because the UX is pretty simple - you just wait a few minutes and it starts. That's it :)
As you can see, the screensaver itself is pretty basic. It just gives you some basic info about NYC transit, the weather, and refreshes it + the background image every 3 minutes.
The important thing is what I've learned from the metrics. Last week I saw:
- 940 users
- 5+ sessions / user
- average session length of 3.25 hours
I know that just because the screensaver is active, does not mean anyone is paying attention. But, I do see the potential to incorporate more information (maybe a horoscope? maybe a webcomic? maybe a few headlines?) -- and create a better lean back news experience.
With more time & design resources, I think I could build a really awesome experience that people would actually pay for. Who wants to hack with me?
This screensaver is built on a heavily modified version of Brian Zimmerman's Unsplash Screensaver => https://github.com/briangzimmerm...
